Ron's Jewelry Sketchbook

cool bands! that breakdown video would be awesome and very much appreciated Ron! I’d think most of us would appreciate even your crappiest design xD ^^ it would give noobs like me an idea how to proceed. Zbrush can be overwhelming with so many tools to try and use.

These are very cool! Do you work for somebody or do you sell these yourself?

Thank you for the support guys~ It means a lot to me to know people like my work!

I’m actually starting my own company instead of working for someone right now but I keep procrastinating the paperwork side~ Everything should be up in a month or two for sale though! Please look forward to it!

As far as a video goes I’m having some trouble with the zbrush exporter. I got the undo history video render to work but I had to transfer it to my laptop to convert it, so apologies for the low quality.
I’ll do a more complete breakdown of one of my morning skulls tomorrow, hopefully everything will be smoother then.
Here is the skull the video I made is of. I’m doing mens rings at the moment so lots of repeating patterns but it gives you the idea.

GoodFreakingGOD!spectacular

Thank you very much for the video. It’s very inspiring seeing how your skull comes to life. Less camera movement would be nice but it is already a great video.

thanks for the video… eye opening to see how you build up details with simple sculpting methods mostly… I was under the impression you used a lot of projection master, alpha, other special techniques etc. ^^ Like the previous member said, would be nice without the camera movement in the video  and a view of your palette so we can see what brushes/settings etc you’re using. ^^ Just a suggestion if you plan on making more videos… Thanks again for the inspiring and educational video

one question, I was wondering how you created/inserted the repeating pattern on this ring (top left ring)? Alpha? Projection Master? etc?

Also your strokes are so smooth
im not having the success I would like with mine
I have the wacom bamboo and maybe it’s the pressure sensitivity of the tablet but I cannot get strokes anywhere near nice like yours
the start and end are bulged and mid stroke I see all kind of interruption

any tips there?

really good work!
Your eye for design is spectatular, and you seem able to get really clean lines out of a fairly loose workflow (clay brushes and whatnot)

Hey guys~ Glad you liked it~ The video is actually a recording of the undo history of the subtool so I dont control the camera movements, the original recording got corrupted. I’ll try setting up another video sometime thats more informative.

@accesskb I actually dont use projection master or place alphas or anything like that because its too much cleanup work in my opinion and as I’m an abstract artist I dont need to get exact and discernible designs out of things. I do everything by hand with the occasional exception for things like complex holes or screws where its just more efficient to place the part instead of trying to sculpt it out perfectly. To make the band in the top left I just used the Orb Crack brush. You can find it by searching it on the forum.

@beneath_the_surface Try adjusting the sensitivity of your tablet I use an intuos 4 so I’m not sure what you can do with a bamboo but that made all the difference for me~ I also use a LOT of custom brushes. As you may have noticed though, they are all different versions of clay brushes with settings mixed to work with my tablet to help me overcome my lack of drawing skills. I do use a few custom alphas for stroke brushes though, simple stuff like diamonds or trapezoids. Its a good idea to set up you’re tablet and brushes to match each other and compensate for what you might have trouble with and accentuate things you like~

And here are my finished mens bands, I say finished but I’m still playing with the one on the far left.

Ah I see the pad can be adjusted
really like the middle band
I want to look into how you go about making custom brushes

Tried bringing in a base band made in another program as a obj file but when I go to divide it breaks up into jagged corners and is unusable
can you not import stl files into zbrush?

and I just let go of my intuos pro!!! Ah
never use something then the second its gone you need it immediately

New Skull! Im being lazy and not doing jewelry lately. I made a video for this one and will upload it later, going to show it to some investors!

@beneath_the_surface Just weld your points. The program you are using is using nurbs instead of polygons which is why it does that in zbrush. You probably want to dynamesh it anyway instead of subdividing though because nurbs have bad topology.

Wow
looks scary mean and ornate all at once
marvellous

awesome! crazy detail on the skull ^^

I’m back~ Here is what I’ve been doing. I’ve been experimenting with setting up a bracelet and some beads to make bracelets, necklaces.
This is a single link in the bracelet, I’ll post a chain of them when I’m finished with the design~ As always, please tell me what you think~

Both sides of the bead I’m working on. I’m hoping to make 3 different types.

Those should look great once cast
look great now

I tried to make a simple custom brush diamond shape like you have but not getting the results like yours

Care to share a tip?

Finished up my bead set~
@beneath_the_surface Try working on a sharper alpha, it took me awhile to get the right shape to show up in zbrush and transfer to the brush.

tons of fun… i wouldn’t worry about getting things sharper i think the soft edge hard surface really defines your style.

Thank you Tomas~ I was thinking the beads might be a bit busy so I might tighten up the design. I did the same with the links for my bracelet. Still working on the ends but I think I’m getting there~

Absolutely awesome designs
