Richard's Sculpture Thread

Hi everyone
This is my first digital sculpture that I created using zbrush, it is also my first digital sculpture period. I am a traditional artist (working with real world materials) however I have always loved digital art. Anyways I’m still learning, and thanks to this forum and the great video tutorials over at The Gnomon Workshop I’m picking everything up rather well.

Here is the model so far and once I finish painting this guy up I’ll post some more pix.
Crits. and Comments welcome.

Update- Here is this alien bust painted up. I’m still not very happy with it but here it is for now, any tips for improvement would be appreciated!

As always crits. and comments welcome.

thanks mdale13

Here is a WIP shot for my new creature. Ive adjusted him quite a bit from the previous zsphere build.

regarding your bust wip-
Features are all very soft and smooth, same
with skin toning- it’s very neutral. I like it a
lot, am really curious what the rest of the
creature looks like and it’s environment.

Thanks for sharing + hope to see more soon.

:+1:

thats wicked mate. i love the mandibles. the whole thing looks tight. good stuff.:+1: .

I’m getting ‘Dark Crystal’ meets ‘Pitch Black’

Thanks for the kind comments everyone!

There’s still some finishing touches to do on this guy but I thought I’d post a couple of progress shots and get some input from the community,
any advice for improvement would be greatly appreciated!

looking great so far.

I would add some more wrinkles (large folds) around his joints (knees, elbows) His skin seems to really be hanging off his muscle on his main body mass, but then seems to fit perfectly over his extremedies. His feet/hands seem to be missing some detail as well, I would add some more tendons and veins to his hands/feet and the lower parts of the limbs. His back ankles look very odd to me as well, it’s a mix of a horses toes and a human wrist…I think. I would probably tone back the large ball shape and bring up the metatarsals to give more of a boney look on the back legs. These are just my opinions and nothing is every set in stone (woohoo Zbrush)

I absolutly love the end of his tail. It’s like having the best prehensile ever.
it might actually be a little too low. i am probably just saying this for asthetic purposes as I never really study animal anatomy.

Other than what you’re probably thinking is a barage of CnC it looks amazing. The skin texture is dead on. I love the set up for the double eyes (i’d like to see his skull actually) and the tail, i love the tail.

Keep up the good work.

Comin’ along awesome!
I really like the head, and I think it’s because it shows
more of what’s ‘underneath’ (bone/muscle) - the rest
of the body looks somewhat smooth (either old or chubby).
Think it could benefit from some more visible
structure, maybe on the back, shoulders, ribs and
in the leg/arm joints. Other than that, yeah the skin
details are stunning and the concept is very cool.
A real light toning (color) would be nice too, just to
get a hint of separation between the sections.

Great work!! :+1:

Thanks for the Crits. and comments Goast 666 and Super Glitcher, there is nothing more useful to an artist than a pair of informed fresh eyes to help make improvements.

I’ll make more adjustments to the joints and bring out the underlying structure on the body, I think I jumped the gun and started texturing too soon- we’ll get there yet!

Love this ZBrush, Love it!

I can’t wait for the day when consumer 3D printers are available (affordable), how far out do you guys think that is?

I don’t know how far off they are… but it’s already too long!
D R O O L

I’ve made quite a few adjustments to this guy, I elongated the body a little, added some hints of underlying structure , and gave more definition to muscle mass. I’m thinking at this point I’ll jump into polypaint- also I think that I might bite the bullet and get Maya for myself. The renders that i see coming from Maya just can’t be beat and if I plan to get a job doing this stuff I’m going to need to learn Maya regardless. So hopefully my next post will be a Maya render (thank god for video tutorials).

Looks great! The adjustments have done a lot for
the model - can’t wait to see what’s next

hi. like your model. to be honest with you I think you jumped to the textures to quick though. Im starting to see the mucle groups but it just looks rushed a bit. the clay brushes do a lot for the model in creating realistic muclegroups. id sugegst makin him a bit bulkier and bringing the knees in closer to the torso. but other than that its lookin good.:+1:

So I got Maya and am busy with several tutorials learning all the ins and outs of this awesome package
(a big thanks to cannedmushrooms- You have helped me out with many things so far).
Here is a tweaked version of my first Z-Brush sculpt, I’m learning the fast skin shader and I’ve also created an eye that I’m pretty happy with.
There is still so much to learn!
