Renaud Galand - Sketchbook

Awesome sculpt Renaud! Beautiful flow of shape and contour! :+1: !

About pinch, I guess it’s a personnal choice, it’s derforming the mesh a bit too much for my taste  In addition to that, the pinch tool tend to make reaaallly sharp edges, and if you look at any edge you can find in real life, there is always a little bevel to it. Once again, it’s just a matter of taste.

here’s an (exaggerate) image to illustrate my point about mesh deformation :

Thanks for all the comments.![explain.jpg|1000x894](upload://AkXu8cLVav3gleEziME79JFrWBC.jpeg)

thx for illustrative response, respect. :+1:
Il start using flatten more often I guess, though, if used properly, with some smooth brush, the deformation can be avoided with pinch to.

I read something about Pinch causing trouble with rendering displacement maps in Max or Maya (probably crunches the UV’s too much)- don’t remember where though.

personally, I only use the pinch brush if I’m planning on doing retopo work… never on final topology

It shouldn’t effect the UVs at all, but it might cause some ugly spots in the displacement map. It’s always a good idea to leave a little breathing room in your geometry. If you pinch the heck out of things willy nilly, you’re likely to end up with intersecting faces.

Love your works Renaud!

A great tip no one mentioned yet is that if you drop down 2-3 subdivisions and use the smooth brush and smooth out your geometry in the pinched areas, just use the reproject higher subdivisions button at the bottom of your geometry menu and you will get the same effect with clean un-crunched faces. Although flatten seems to give a nice result, I will try this in the future instead.

You can still pinch, go back to lowest level of subdiv, and press reproject higher subdiv.

If you low res hasnt been streched, it should give the same edge, without distortion.
But its a matter of tastes, your right

Cute little monster!

I’m a big fan of your model in the first post, love the stylized look of him with the hard edges and all.

Look forward to seeing more of your work.

great trick man the mesh is still the same, I very usuful your technique…I was wonder if you won´t make a dvd tutorial…jejeje…waiting for updates:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:

Here’s a tiny update on the Pirate. I want to have him done this month !

(btw, the technic used for the shoulderpad is the same I used for the gothic girl I did a few weeks ago).

I absolutely love your style. 5 stars

This picture caught my eye as soon as I saw the thumbnail in the bottom row.
