This is happening to me as well. Any time I save the project or do a quicksave whatever is on the screen vanishes. I have to navigate to refresh the view and get my work back.

Also, regarding the display issue, did R4 make the sub-tool disappear when applying an insert mesh. I am new to Zb so cant recall if it did that in r4! Makes it damned hard to apply a IMM accurately LOL!
Having said that and with reference to the other display issues mentioned, whilst I get the disappearing mesh issue like everyone else, I no longer get the weird corrupt lines issues when I rotate my mesh!
So that’s cool
Here’s another problem.
There’s a bug in my opinion with the Polygroups “Group as Dynamesh sub” command that makes doing Dynamesh subs or adds plus booleans with insert sphere etc brushes not work.
For example to cut a piece out of a divided cube using the Insert Cylinder brush you now need to do the following:
Create cube and divide in normal way. Delete lower levels
Apply Dynamesh at whatever resolution you want
Use the Insert Cylinder brush in Z add mode (doesn’t matter if you use Z sub mode, you’ll just need to enable “Double” in display properties to see it properly)
Move the cylinder etc if need be. The cube will be masked
Go to Polygroups and click on the “Group as Dynamesh sub” command
Run the command again but this time do it by pressing Ctrl + W. Notice how the mask is removed this time around
Update Dynamesh in the worksplace by Ctrl dragging a mask in a clear area
Done
Just clicking on the “Group as Dynamesh Sub” command once doesn’t work. You have to click it then run the same command again by the short cut for things to work.

Yep, saving has become evil.
The fix is sort of stupid, you need to go into Preferences and under QuickSave set Maximum Duration and Rest Duration to 600, all this does is makes AutoSave go away for 600 minuets NOT a fix.
Saving will still blank the canvas and will still KILL OFF ANY RENDER YOU MAY BE WORKING ON. And no, that was not capslock.
You are lucky you can navigate to refresh, thaat does not work for me.
Yes, that started in 4R4, and it effects negative insert mesh, its bloody horrible.
There are two ways of fixing this (No, three actually).
The first is a crappy hack:
In the Display Properties Pallet turn on Double.
Then in the toolbar on the right hand side turn on Transparent.
This helps but is still visually unpleasant and messes with your work flow.
The next one is insulting:
Revert to doing Insert mesh work in ZBrush 4R3.
This option should include heavy drinking as a lot of the seriously good insert mesh stuff was introduced in 4R4 and not having access to that stuff will surely get irritating.
And the third option… welllllll…
The third option is to convince Pixologic that invisible objects that flash on and off and turn semi transparent while pixelating their parent objects are hard to work on.
I did all of this.
Every time I re-open a file, or restart ZB, it is reset to default.
How do you save the preference so it “sticks” the way I set it??
I think I worded my question wrong, so a re-post with clarity =
Several times I have set up preferences (Not UI or config)Specifically - -
Every time I re-open a file, or restart ZB, it is reset to default (those revisions are not there).
How do you save the preference so it “sticks” the way I set it??
Thanks for the tips there - I will try tip 1 - sounds better than total guesswork Tip 2 is a no go - I do not have r3 and as for tip 3 well I am sure they will get it fixed ASAP, kinda of one of those bugs that everyone agrees need to be squashed! Cheers for the tips!
Just trying out your tip there, and I have noticed that, at least on the project I am working on, the problem only occurs when in Solo mode. If all subtools are visible then they do not disappear, but if you are in solo mode then the mesh you are applying the IM on disappears! Might help out a bit.

To save this stuff you want Alt Control Shift I
HOWEVER, and this is IMPORTANT:
Do this only right after starting up ZBrush and making the changes you want, if you have been doing other things you could save those as well creating all sorts of stupid problems (trust me on this, I have done it, I managed once to get rid of my Edit button and remapped the letter T to something else and then forgot what, it was interesting to say the least).
Also, and this is important as well:
Save a copy of your settings directory, which under windows should be somewhere like this:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Pixologic\ZBrush 4R5\ZStartup
So making a copy of \ZStartup COULD save you a bit of a nightmare if you do something adventurous and it rears up and bites off your head.
I leave the undo/redo history the way they are, those seem to be useful and can in some cases be a rather amazing thing, like after working on something you can sneak back and grab early copies of it and stuff, its sort of great and doesn’t effect the auto/quick save which is the problem…
That’s just me however, if you want to nuke that as well you can, I think its the same key command.|
Ok, so I have a problem, which is, I click tool -> surface -> noise and zbrush stops working, sometimes it says insufficient ram ( I am running windows 8 64 bit, and 16gb RAM), and besides my tool is less than 500k polygons, the curious thing is that I know this shouldn’t happen i’ve used surface noise on 1million polygon subtools/objects.
So, I think, I’ll give the basic polysphere.ztl a try, it should work, but I get the same exact problem, I just get zbrush executable stopped working… besides strange it’s annoying, cuz really I just dont get it.
Any ideas? This is Zbrush 4R5 btw.
Thanks!
Okay, I have been dealing with this strange export bug when I send primitives out of the Zbrush in XSI. Basically, upon initial export everything is ok, but when I get into XSI, the model in question is only a few bytes which is barely readable… it isn’t until I export it AGAIN. This will occasionally happen with very low poly meshes that I use with GoZ (which also breaks it)… has anyone had this particular issue?
MAKE 3D Dbls double sided setting broken in Z4.5
In Z4.5 I’m making a model by loading an alpha image combined with using MAKE 3D.
I choose Dbls so it will be double sided. Then I hit MAKE 3D.
Z4.5 broke the “Dbls” setting produces only single sided model now.
It works fine in Z4.3
Win 64 pro, 2600k I7 and GTX 660 CARD
As a workaround I’ll try make it in Z4.3 then export tool, then import tool to 4.5 for further work.
Can someone see if there Z4.5 has broke this also?
thanks for the reply, so it’s not just me. I could not follow the work around you mentioned.
I’ll be glad when it’s fixed.
My work around worked out ok make it double sided in Z4.3 or 4.4 then export tool, then import tool to 4.5 for further work.
Which is why I keep a previous zb version going, encase something like this happens.
Hi, I have just installed 4R5 and find that it runs very slow. For example, a high poly tool can’t even be rotated without several minutes wait. 4R3 ran fine. Any known issues I should know about?
In z4r3, my model rotated around the last point I touched. Now it seems to rotate around some other point. Is there a way to reset this?
OK, got it. Just found out what the ‘local’ button is for!
I’m getting the exact same error on my Mac.
This applies to all ZBrush 4R5 users.
An issue was identified in ZAppLink that caused errors whenever it was used. An update has now been released to fix this issue. Please download the new version from the Download Center. This will be a ZIP file. After downloading, open the ZIP file and then copy the ZAppLink_4.0.zsc into your ZBrush installation’s ZStartup\ZPlugs directory. When asked, you will need to choose the option to replace the existing version of the file. The new version of ZAppLink will then load automatically the next time you launch ZBrush.
