Questions & Troubleshooting for ZBrush 2019

The “Duplicate” subtool button duplicates an entire folder if it’s not expanded which isn’t intuitive if you’re used to navigating to subtools by alt-clicking them in the canvas. I think the Duplicate button should send up a question dialogue confirming the duplication of an folder if the folder isn’t expanded.

It would also be better if when you alt-click a subtool on the canvas that was in a collapsed folder it expanded that folder and scrolled to the active subtool in the subtool list.

@phantasmagoria

I agree wholeheartedly.
I’d say that even switching subtool with arrow keys should expand/collapse relevant folders.

Duplicating a folder should only be possible from the folder’s gear icon menu.
(Or alternatively with a different command - duplicate folder rather then duplicate - maybe Alt+Shift+D)

At the very least the currently default behavior should be optional.

+1 on arrow navigation expanding/collapsing folders.

Just a small glitch:
Here at macOS ZB2019 doesn’t use its icon in the Dock, Launchpad aso. Instead macOS sets the default icon image for applications.

In case that happens to you too here’s a hack around this:

  • Search for some ZB .icns file (e.g. /Applications/ZBrushOSX 2019/Pixologic Deactivation Manager.app/Contents/Resources/AppIcon.icns (silver on transparent)
    or
/Applications/ZBrushOSX 2019/ZBrush.app/Contents/Resources/ZBrushLogo.icns (shiny black on white opaque background)
  • Open this .icns in Preview, select an image from there and copy it to clipboard.
  • Go to /Applications/ZBrushOSX 2019/ZBrush.app, RMB click on ZBrushApp and call Informations
  • In the Infos window click on the current icon (the small one on the upper left of Infos) >> the icon should be highlighted with a blue borderline now.
  • Hit Cmd+V to paste the image you copied before

Maybe there’s a better way to fix this broken link?

Thank you for the reply, I only asked because I was given a particular bridge version for KS 5.1 when I upgraded to ZB2018 and was curious if I would need to go through those steps again.

So glad you and JAnthony are up and running now. Have fun!

Hi All,
following the directions update ZB2019 went well, following reactivation of ZB2018 also ok,
just one question:
In the future if I want permanently to uninstall ZB2018 which of the two licences should be deactivated ?
The one that have “201800” or the one that have “-1” ?

thanks

I think it’s the -1. But if you do the wrong one it really won’t matter because if ZBrush 2019 deactivates as well you can always just turn around and activate it again. The 2018/2019 system is much more forgiving than the old 4.x system. You can always just clear all activations on My Licenses and then reactivate where you need it. Unlike the old system, doing that will not risk wrecking your serial number.

When I installed (during) Zbrush 2019, my Windows detected a HackTool (although I disabled Windows Defender as per instructions).

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/threats/malware-encyclopedia-description?Name=HackTool:Win32/RemoteAdmin&ThreatID=-2147235422

What has this do mean?
I’ve downloaded ZBrush 2019 from (Windows) EU Server.

But nevertheless I had success with the installation of ZB 2019

I would wish, to get as a next update (zBrush 2020) a more, more simpler way, to reach and get realistic hair results in zBrush. (Gravity and some things, TO OPTIMIZE the hair positions, ect.)

But i like the new Update.
Especially the new ZRemesher :+1:

my installation works fine on windows 7

I thought i could import a scene with objrct and a camera from 3dsmax but not.

Inside ZB he FBX export camera but don’t import from 3dsmax , I tried with FBX2010 to 2014.
I also tried to open the fbx coming from ZB into Blender and Daz studio, there is no camera at all!
Is this the way it is designed?

Zremesher3 don’t work! only in legacy mode

When you say that ZRemesher 3 doesn’t work, it would help if you actually said what happens. If it’s an error about a missing .dll file, your first step is to run the vcredist installers in your ZBrush 2019\Troubleshoot Help folder. You’re getting the error because Windows components that ZRemesher needs aren’t in your Windows installation. For most users, the vcredist installers adds those components successfully.

After a test :
the one that have “-1” is ZB2019 license and “201800” is ZB2018 license.
As suggested, however, is possible turn around and activate it again if wrong license deactivated.

I got up and running with no problems…perhaps a gift for waiting a few days. However, I have not seen the following question asked, so here goes.

Subscriptions are nice for some people, but I like owning. So I am glad to see that Pixologic/ZBrush is retaining a permanent license. However, what I am not seeing is upgrade pricing. I really hope that loyal ZBrush users are not going to be asked to repurchase ZBrush every year for the same cost a new user would pay.

I did see in the FAQ that updates are covered for a year after purchase and upgrades past the year of a purchase of a permanent license is possible which will be nice if that happens, but it leaves a question of whether we can at present expect to receive the 2020 upgrade with the permanent license we currently have. I DO realize that Pixologic/ZBrush has been beyond generous with updates for the last many years, but customers need to know what to look for in the future purchase-wise. Again, I hope that future upgrades are not treated as a new purchase every year from here on out. If so, I need to know now.

Thanks.

As said before, absolutely nothing has changed regarding perpetual licenses. You have the same upgrade expectations now that you always have. We’re not trying to be coy or anything; we just don’t have anything to say about upgrade pricing because we have never charged for an upgrade and may never do so. If and when we do, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. But users will still have the same guarantee of free upgrades for one year from date of purchase.

I didn’t mean to suggest that the company was being coy. I am just looking for clarification so I can pass it along to others who are confused about what subscription vs permanent licence entails. I am just trying to make sure I am on solid ground and do not say anything that the company did not mean.

In a lot of discussions around the Internet, it is being suggested that the new pricing means that a permanent license is only good for one year of updates and that after that a NEW license will be needed at the original price. Hence the question about upgrade pricing.

I KNOW that there have not been charges for upgrades for many years (since I started using the program). What I am saying is that the facts about permanent licensing needs to be clearer. There are some people who may shy away from the permanent licensing if they think they will have to pay $895 per year.

Lol, I am not sure if I have made my question any clearer.

Thanks!

I certainly understand, but there’s really no way to be more clear on the subject. What I can say is that if you look at our record it’s very obvious that we are out to be the best value in the industry and that we have no desire to bleed our users dry. The industry norm is that upgrades run about 30% of the new license price. So it’s extremely likely that if we ever did charge for upgrades, that is about the most that would be expected. It’s also a certainty that we would never make people pay full price every couple of years. Guaranteed free upgrades for one year does not mean no upgrades after one year.

Thank you! That is the clarification I needed. I suspected this was the case, but didn’t not want to put words in the company’s mouth. As I said, people are telling other people that they will have to pay the full price EVERY year to continue to get upgrades. I will send messages to the people who are posting the wrong information along with my relatively long history with ZBrush in getting upgrades so they can know what a great deal it is.

I cannot begin to tell you how grateful I am to Pixologic for both ZBrush and its generosity. I wish more companies would follow your lead.

The scrollbar in the subtool menu is still very small in zbrush 2019.

Everything was fine till today when I got this zremesher error.

Another error is a pop-up window that msvcp120.dll is missing. Error in zremesh.exe

Legacy mode works fine, tho.

I tried to restart zbrush, or computer and still I got this error. I didn’t install anything lately so why I got this file missing?
What to do now?

nebular,

See here:

Using “Init ZBrush” in preferences menu now keeps the previous project’s name active. Pressing Ctrl-S after using “Init ZBrush” will try to save over the previously opened project by default. While there is still a confirmation step this is rather dangerous and it would be easy to inadvertently overwrite a project with an empty one. I’m guessing this is a bug rather than intended behavior as “Init ZBrush” is supposed to reset the software to its starting state.

I can’t start with the step 1, when I double click Pixologic Deactivation Manager.exe with zBrush 2018 closed, it throws an error saying “This application has failed to start because the side-by-side configuration is incorrect. blah blah… use sxstrace.exe tool to get more details”.

any idea what can I do?

I’ve seen I still have 4R8 installed. Do I have to uninstall 4R8 first?

We don’t see this pop up very often anymore, but when it does it can be a real pain. Here’s the article that explains this issue and gives steps for trying to resolve it: https://support.pixologic.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/17/0/this-application-has-failed-to-start-because-the-side-by-side-configuration-is-incorrect-reinstalling-the-application-may-fix-this-problem
