Questions & Troubleshooting for ZAppLink 4

not that i’ve been able to find yet. unless i’ve just missed it in this thread somewhere? someone in another thread suggested doing a full uninstall and reinstall of ZB4 and ZApplink4, but i did that and still can’t get ZApplink to work.

I’m just glad I didn’t upgrade my home workstation to windows 7. not sure if this is an uncommon problem that’s seen by just a ‘lucky’ few or if this thread’s semi dead. doesn’t seem like many people are chiming in on this…i was surprised when i saw your post. mine was a week old and i figured no one was checking up on this thread anymore.

I searched zbc and other forums couldn’t find anything about this problem.
I reinstalled zb too but it’s the same issue.
It looks like it’s only us…

same here. i was kinda hoping that other people were seeing the same issue and either had a solution or aurick or one of the other pixologic guru types would see the thread and have a solution. the thread i posted on this bug in the Troubleshooting forum has something like 60 views, but no responses. I guess that means very few others are seeing the same bug…? either that or we’re just doing something insanely dumb and the question doesn’t merit a response  hahaha

I found something:
If I paint something on the layer before zapplink to Photoshop then the projection appears on the painted area but only where I was previously painted.

Paint on Layer:

However with this Zbrush layers are still useless with Zapplink…

interesting. i’ll keep that in mind while i continue to try to figure out why this isn’t working. i’ll post whatever i find as i find it.

so your discovery got me thinking…its a totally odd work around, but it seems to work. just turn off zadd and pick a white color (or some appropriate base color) and paint your whole model that color. then start using ZApplink as normal. ZB now picks up the colors from PS just fine. not exactly optimal, but not a bad work around in the mean time. i tried this with multiple layers and it seems to work.

Hi all
I’ve been having this problem with zAppLink 4 with the latest ZB. It seems to be reprojecting the existing paint onto the mesh eventhough that part of the polypaint didn’t change. It also seems that it applies that paint to any vertex that points towards the camera, even if it’s hidden. Here’s an example:

I painted the red stroke first in zAppLink:

This is becoming a major problem when painting faces. Especially areas around ears and the nose.

Anyone have any idea what’s going on? Or some sort of a workaround?

Did you try with the fade mode on or off?

Those shots were taken with fade mode on. With fade off it looks much better actually.

So I guess I don’t understand exactly what fade does then. I thought it just blurs the edges so that when you project something close to the edges of a mesh it doesn’t smear.

Also, is there a way with zAppLink to not collapse everything before returning to zBrush? That way it projects only new paint and not the pre-existing stuff.

Didnt have ttime to try this posible solution but Have you tried to mask or hide the side of the object you do no no want to paint?

Hope it helps!!!

Hi Peeps,

My Zapplink is causing me problems as it will not apply polypaint drawn in photoshop to the z-brush model. I’m using Z-brush 4 and working in Photoshop CS5 (64bit).

Here is my workflow:

  1. Doc => Zapplink => Fade => Drop Now

Its probably something quite simple, but its got me foxed. Any help would be great. Thanks a lot!

You don’t forget something, it’s an issue with the layers: it will fill the layer only on areas which have a painted color. Just as a test, paint some color on area of your mesh, go in ZApplink (or Projection Master), paint on the top of your mesh, on area with a painted color on your layer and area which doesn’t have. Then go back in ZBrush, only the area which has been previously painted has been updated.

Thanks TotyoTested as suggested and it has worked! Thank you very much :+1:

Hi,

Like some people I’m having the photoshop crash when I try to ZApp smth.
It seems to work fine when I reinstall Photoshop and don’t reboot my pc… Kinda annoying tho.

If anyone have a clue on how to fix this, this would be very appreciated!

Braga.3D: please, tells us when Photoshop crash, I mean after which steps.

Hi,

First thanks for answering back.

Thing goes like this :

When I press ZAppLink the image is sent to photoshop (CS5) and when it open displaying the image, it just crash by saying “Photoshop blablabla”.

Uploading a screen for better understanding!

@Totyo

Translation for other people :

He asked me to desactivate OpenGL in CS5, and to try if a copy/paste of TempZAppLinkExport then open it via Photoshop could work.
Both options didn’t work out.

Braga : I have a request, I send you a private message.

I’m trying to use ZAppLink 4 so I can texture a model in Photoshop (CS5) and whenever I try, I get this message:
“Plugin Note: memory could not be allocated.
ABitMap:small_orange_diamond:Allocate”
and when I hit OK I get this error message:
“error encountered while attempting to launch external editor”

If I half the resolution to 4k it DOES work but I need it at 8k or I’ll lose my gig!!! ANY ideas/suggestions/crazy thoughts would be SO appreciated!

My computer specs are:
Mac OSX 10.6.8
Processor Name - Quad Core Intel Xeon (64-bit)
Processor Speed - 3 GHz
2 Processors / L2 Cache (per processor) - 12 MB
Memory (RAM) - 8 GB / 800 MZh
Bus Speed - 1.6 GHz

When I use Activity Monitor with both Photoshop and Zbrush open:
Free space: 5.00 gb
Wired: 521 mb
Active: 860 mb
Inactive: 1.4 gb
Used; 2.74 gb

Many thanks, Jana
