Hi
I am new to ZB, so apologies if I ask stupid questions… I have the following problem: I have created a simple object with a UV map in Cinema 4d R11 and wanted to send it with GoZ to ZB. I get an error message that ZB cannot open the file (it had worked with other files before). The problem seems to be german ‘ü’ character in the name. So I wanted to re-name the object, but whatever I do, I get the GoZ Note:
‘new-name’ already exists in the current GoZBrush project. The object will be renamed ‘old-name’
… which happens if I hit ok - and the problem remains. The strange thing is that this sticks to the object even if I:
-copy and paste the object in a new c4d document in a different location
-restart both programs
-delete the files in the default GoZ Project folders
I had a similar problem with another file where I realized in ZB that the UV wasn’t very good. So I amended the UV is Bodypaint. But when I sent it back to ZB, it would only use the old UV and stick to it whatever I tried to do. How is this information attached to the c4d file and how can it be deleted or refreshed?
Many thanks ThreeDivo
Presuming this is on Mac, go look in the /Users/Shared/Pixologic/GoZ_Projects directory, and see if a file exists somewhere under there with the name of the object (or some variation).
I was in Zbrush 3.12 for OSX, sculpting a vase when I randomly decided to save both tool and document in case of a crash (I had one just recently). Then, I continued sculpting. After a couple minutes, I realized that a duplicate image had been made when I saved. The vase I was sculpting was in Edit Mode but the one underneath it (but still on the same layer) was just there. I could not move it, sculpt it, or anything. It was like a ghost image of the vase right before I saved it. Any ideas on how to fix this?
I tried undoing a couple times but that just led to both vases disappearing and Zbrush crashing and relaunching. What is going on? I just lost a whole day’s worth of work. <img src=“http://www.zbrushcentral.com/pixo/atn.gif”><img src=“http://www.zbrushcentral.com/pixo/atn.gif”>
ZBrush sometimes makes silly things.
Maybe you can delete the second vase by going to lowest subdivision and hiding the polygons of the surplus vase. In the Geometry-menu you can press »delete hidden«.
Maybe »Backface Masking« may help.
Or you have to export it as .obj and process in a other 3D package most of us use, too (like me C4D)
This is what I would try out.
Like I said, sometimes ZB makes silly things.
Cross my fingers!
Stephan
Could it be that you have a “snapshot” of your vase visible in the back? I can’t see any image in your post, so I don’t know what it looks like… If you press “Shift + S” then you will create a snapshot that is frozen in the back of your editable tool and to get rid of it press “Cmd + N” on mac (try Ctrl+N on PC). Not sure if this is the problem, but just a thought.

It sounds like you created a snapshot. You can do this intentionally by holding ‘shift s’, then to clear the canvas of the snapshot ‘control n’. Why are you using 3.12? Download the updated 3.2. It is much better, less bugs, less crashes.
Hey everyone,
Thanks for all the advice. I can’t push control+n because that’ll clear the vase I’m sculpting as well as the ghost image. I have no idea what backface masking is. o__o
I deleted all lower subdivisions when I upped the resolution and I’m at above 2mil pixels right now. It just happened to me again. I saved the document and this is what happened. The smaller vase is sculpt-able and movable and all that. The larger one is just dead center, unmovable, can’t touch it.
Also, I just got Zbrush three days ago so bear with my simple sculpting…

Clear your canvas with Ctrl+N and then just draw your vase back on the canvas and press Edit. Your tool will be exactly how it was when you cleared the document.

Hi Elaineke,
- Download 3.2. There is no reason to use zbrush 3.12.
- Are you using the 2.5 tools? Or are you simply creating a vase? If you are not using the 2.5 tools (and making 2d artwork of some kind), you do no need to save the document at all, you only need save the ztool.
- When you are in edit mode (working the ztool of a vase) hitting control/command + n will not clear the ztool. It only clears the document behind the ztool.
And lastly, I keep telling you to upgrade (free) to 3.2 because 3.12 has various bugs that have been fixed in 3.2. Some of the bugs are directly related to the document.
bLawless, Richard Marklew,
Thanks for the advice. I command+n’d the canvas and cleared it. Then I drew in the tool again. Yay~!
bLawless,
I get your point; I’ll upgrade immediately after I post this. Thanks for taking the time to help me!
I’m pretty young and experienced with Zbrush so I’ll probably be coming back to this forum a lot. I hope you guys will help me again
Well i just installed Maya 2011 and tried to use GoZ, everything went well and Zbrush created a Shelf in Maya for the GoZ, but there is NO BUTTON in the shelf!!
So i cant send my models back to Z…
Any suggestions???
Thanks in advance!
Hey, guys.
I am thinking of switching to a better hardware, like soon, and don’t have clue what i’m looking for. I’m a mac user, so a Mac Pro will likely be the choice (with enough Ghz and 4-8 Ram, of course).
But what’s up with ZBrush for mac? Any news?
Before i buy anything i really need to know this: Will it always be like this, so much later for Mac, with the latest versions?
I really hope 4 will come out for both (PC & Mac) at the same time.
So… ?
v3.5 for mac is in beta testing. Pixologic have said that for future versions both pc and mac versions should be released at the same time. Whether this will happen and when 3.5 and v4 are released your guess is a good as mine and anyone else on these boards.
Richard
Here are my two cents.
I work in a company with Zbrush PC users. I am on the mac. Zbrush 3.2 has GoZ. This is a great asset. PC users, with the latest Zbrush, have scaling issues. They have ‘work arounds’ instead of GoZ. Heck they barely use transpose master from what I learned last week. They work back and forth with Maya and Zbrush and so the scaling thing is a hassle. I have been told by ALL of them this is the case so I have to believe them. But it is hard to believe, because on the Mac I have ZERO issues with scaling and going back and forth with Modo. I have zero issues with transpose. I LOVE the export sliders, while the PC guys point at it and say that is the problem. It is the ‘solution’, they either can’t figure it out or the zbrush PC version hasn’t been properly incorporated yet. So when people say Mac is behind PC with Zbrush they aren’t seeing the whole picture. Zbrush leap frogs back and forth, Mac will be ahead in some ways, and PC in others. Mac is not ‘always behind’.
And in regards to which Mac to get, hmm. Zbrush works very well on almost all macs. To make great artwork you never need more than 3 million polygons per subtool, so getting a Mac Pro just for Zbrush is not necessary. If you need the Mac Pro for Maya that’s another story. Imacs are great for Zbrush.
Good luck
Well i have an iMac 2008 with the core2duo 3.06 and 4gig ram and i run zbrush, maya and photoshop all at once without and problem.
Pixologic has been saying that the next Mac version of zbrush would come out from november but they still havent realeased it. What that tells me is that they are doing all they can to match the PC and Mac version so they can finally release Version 4 for both at the same time. If that happens i think that there wont be anymore delays and they will always come out together after that.
Now if this doesnt happen dont forget u can always run the PC version of Zbrush on your mac, especially if ur getting the Mac Pro, im sure it will run great even with parallels, not just bootcamp.
Also ever since ive got my Mac i cant imagine my self going back to windows, but thats just me
Hey, guys.
Thanks for that.
I am thinking of this hardware for alot of programs, but mainly Maya and ZBrush workflow. My MacBook Pro Ram has gone severy bad (2Gb) and i’m tired of those programs constantly crashing. (Which drives me to getting more than i really need for the moment)
Maya, ZBrush, Photoshop, AE, Final Cut Studio and more… Just want it to work properly so i can focus on the action. And stop going: Sigh…
Yeah, it’s great that they are trying to reach this goal, of releasing ZBrush 4 at the same time… It’ll be awesome.
Would be best to get Parallel or Bootcamp to run other things who are still not on Mac like 3ds Max and other stuff.
Later.
meletis:
Got the same problem, but it’s very easy to fix - “by hand”
Do the following:
- Start Maya 2011
- Choose Window > General Editors > Script Editor
- In the Script Editor window choose Edit > Clear All in case you may have there some previosly loaded scripts, then choose File > Load Script and find a script called GoZBrushFromMaya.mel - in Mac OS it’s in the /Users/Shared/Pixologic/GoZBrush/Scripts/Maya folder
- Place the mouse cursor in the bottom part of the Script Editor window (where there’s a script loaded), then select all and middle-mouse-button-drag it to the GoZBrush shelf - you now have a button.
cheers
