Questions and Troubleshooting for ZBrush 3.5R2 Windows

Hey Aurick…lol…I lost my visible numbe of active poly’s count!.

I chose to switch off lightbox at start up and the little feature/number that lets you know how many active polys you have just vanished!!!. I can only tell the poly count by clicking on each sub tool in the sub tool tray. Just thought I would mention it.

Thank you aurick!

Getting the upgrade was a bit more tricky than it had to be. I wish there were some clear directions on the link “ZBrush 3.5r2 Released”. I was waiting for a new email from Cleverbridge. Oh well, I got it installed, after confirming that it was the correct version. License activation with no problem. Thanks pixo! Waiting for GoZ next.

How can I force the “vmem” swapfile folder to be elsewhere? I don’t want this to be in the default location on my app install drive – I want to put it on another drive, an SSD or a RAM disk. So I’m hoping there are some hidden ways to change this drive/folder location. If there isn’t now . . . there should be in the next release, because power users need to control the swapfile location, like we can in Photoshop.

Thanks!

“Power users”?
You mean your machine runs using electricity?
WOW!!

…what means this word, electricity? :stuck_out_tongue:

Is anyone having problems with the standard brush stroke? or at least notice the difference between 3.1 and 3.5 in freehand mode? For me there seems to be no difference between Dotted and Freehand mode, and all the my strokes are very dotted unless I go really slow. I’m curious to know if it’s just the machines at my work or if it’s a bug. This is our main brush at work, so we’re kind of sad that we have to stay with 3.1. I played with the stroke average, tablet settings, modifiers, etc, but nothing works.

:large_orange_diamond:What is the Auto Recovery feature?
It’s a new feature which is activated when, for one reason or another, ZBrush has crashed. At this stage ZBrush will attempt to save the currently select tool and document to the recovery folder. This feature is OFF by default because it is not compatible with all windows configurations at this time (it is not recommended for Windows 7).

doesn’t work on xp either. at least not here on my machine.
I have submitted a trouble ticket in this regard anyway : CTV-373026

I don’t seem able to actually project with the zproject brush, it just sort of turns the object lightly masked where it would usually be projecting. No pushing at all. I tried different key combinations but doesn’t work.

Well, let me put it this way: if you follow that big black (mostly black, but it comes in flavors) cable from the back of your machine long enough, you’ll be stuck sooner or later right in front of a wall.
Do not despair but remove the cable that seemingly grows out of this wall.
You are still with me?
Perfect!
Now, look at the place where the cable had been before you removed it.
Depending what country you live in, you’ll find a couple of small holes, sittin in a white (your’s maybe grey, does not matter: beneath the dust it is white) piece of plastic.
Ok, now take two pieces of thick wire, one in each hand, and put each one in one of the holes!
You will feel a short sensation, maybe even you will think something has hit you.
THAT comes from the electricity that sits inside these holes.
You know now what electricity is - not only a word, but something weird: you can not see it, you can not smell it (normally), but you simply KNOW it is there.
Now, making of electricity is a little more complex then finding out if it really is there. Would be too much for the limited space in this forum to describe properly.
But it is like with most things: even komplex matters are described very easily, all you need is the will to get to the base of things.

Running 3.5r2 on XP service pack 3 with 3 gb ram. When I try to save a material ZBrush just quits and tells me the tool can be reloaded from the autorecovery folder.

Anyone else encountered this problem?

Edit: also if i try to load a material it crashes.

@ sadicus

Please man don’t ever try to do as Zaphod said. Just believe him that electricity IS realy there. Let physics do the rest for you

Cheers to everyone and happy zbrushing!

I’m done for now:

that stubborn piece of code (3.5R2 if you’re in doubt) just told me that it can not write to TempFiles!

Told him that I personally built this folder (by hand) - no avail.

As a result Lightbox did show nothing - and finally I detected that 3.5R2 is missing the SubToolsMaster (not related to the folder bug).
Enough for one day (or had it been three?).
Maybe tomorrow I’ll show “him” who is wearing the pants in this household, but for now - sleep tight everybody;)!

disable autorecovery, restart zbrush and try again.

Is ZB 3.5 / RC2 supposed to be backwards compatible with 3.1? Even with a simple sculpted sphere I get errors… :frowning:

When i try using the Scroll icon/button it seems very choppy panning the document around.

So I am trying to figure out how to Scroll the document window using the spacebar. If i hold Control while hovering over the Scroll icon/button,the pop-up info box says you can also pan the window by holding spacebar while dragging on the canvas but this doesn't work for me. Any help is appreciated...

My understanding was that the Right-Click navigation allowed you to navigate when zoomed close into a model where there is no empty space for left-click navigation. Right-click navigation works when sculpting in Edit Mode. But when using Transpose (Move, Rotate, Scale modes) or doing retopology Right-Click navigation doesn’t work.

Have you tried Lazymouse with LazySmooth=0 and LazyRadius=1? I just tried this and WOW! No dotting or delay even with very small brush sizes. There is slight ‘cornering’ with very fast curves (like in Photoshop) but the results are still amazing.

Hello,

It seems tablet sensitivity sliders (in the preferences menu) have no effect.
Ex. I set size sensitivity to zero so brush size remains constant regardless of pressure but the pressure still affects the size.

Here are some bugs and issues I have noticed in last two days. I haven’t actually used 3.5R2 that much yet. Some are probably already mentioned.

Bugs

  • Material editor does not pop up when pressing F6 if cursor is on canvas

  • It’s not possible to resize window from bottom right corner. Solution: Do maximize-restore once or twice from right top corner button. Same is true for 3.1

  • Matcaps from 3.1 are interpreted bit differently. Edge of many materials seems to be read differently from bitmat than in 3.1, resulting in dark/ bright edges, depending on what material images contain

Workflow issues / changes from 3.1

  • Material preview is missing from load material window

  • Mask painting strength is very low compared to 3.1

  • Using shift left click+drag to move mesh along normal direction in 3.1 was more intuitive than what is now in 3.5R2. New method results in slower sculpting

  • Focal length slider is inversed / little bit unintuitive
