Simply removing the space from the “ZBrush 2” folder name did the trick for me (I still have a space in the hard drive’s name).
My config:
ZBrush 2.03 in standard Application folder.
Mac OS 10.4.3.
Admin account.

Got mine to work by removing the space in my external hd

LOL, once I think I’ve stumbled across a solution for all ills, ZAppLink continues to leave me scratching my head. (Now that I finally got ZAppLink to work. )
For some insight, here’s what I’m working with: Beige G3 w/ 500 Mhz G4 upgrade, 10.3.9, Zbrush 2.03 (running under an admin account), PS 7. I have my apps installed on a separate hard drive from the boot disk, with permissions on that drive set to be ignored.
After swinging by this thread to see if any progress has been made, I tried the “removing the space” routine on the names to the hard drive (replaced with under scores), to the folder containing my apps, and renaming Zbrush to Zbrush.app. EUR-FREAKIN’-EKA!
(As a warning, don’t change up names of folders, etc in the system while Zbrush runs otherwise it throws up and craps out on you.)
Just the funny thing, that leaves me wondering, is that after I only needed to eliminate spaces up to a target App’s folder. In other words the folder named “Adobe Photoshop 7” doesn’t have to be renamed “Adobe_Photoshop_7”.
Now ZAppLink functions with both PS7 and Painter 8
Clear as mud?
After downloading the update Zbrush 2.03 everything go smoothly. But if I change the folder of Zbrush to a subfolder or more another partition its buggy again. But now it works perfectly… pffffffffff… relax now and testing !!!
Thanks !!!
Nicolas
i used unshaded layer with the adjustment layer.>> zbrush doesn’t accept layers between background and adjustment layer. i always got to merge down to background layer. is that the usual workflow or a bug, cause with “unshaded” only, zbrush accepts layers above the background layer?
This almost worked, I managed to pick the canvas back up but it crashed a second later. I guess the real issue is that we should not have to go messing with permissions or closing gaps in app/folder/disc names - especially not the HD, because that in turn may affect the way other apps with path searching functions perform. I am supremely confident pixologic are working to resolve this but all the same its frustrating not being able to find a solution which means I can actually start learning how to use it. Looks very promising though!

Hi, i’m having major problems with Zapplink also. I’ve looked through this thread, tried everything suggested but it won’t work, at all.
I’m on windows XP pc, have zbrush2, and downloaded zapplink just recently. Now, when I open Zbrush, I go to documents then click on the zapplink button. A box pops up and asks me randoms options, and to press one of them then press ok. I tried clicking everyone at different times but when I click ‘ok’, it say’s in another little box “Zapplinking…” (or something like this) so I wait while it loads when suddenl;y I get an error message on my screen saying “this program has to close”, can’t remember the exact message now but after that the whole thing crashes and closes on me.
This happens everytime after the little ‘applinking…’ box appears.
Any clue what to do?
It sounds like a problem with your file associations. What happens when you double-click on a PSD file in one of your folders? Does your image editor open? What editor are you using (including version number)?
at the moment the only image editing software i use is paintshop pro 8 and illustrator cs. do i have to have photoshop for it the make a difference or are things like paintshop okay to use too?
i just tried now and it did the same, said it was ‘zapplinking’ then crashed and went off again.
tried it again today and now i get this:
It should work with PSP, provided that PSP can open the PSD format. But you still haven’t said what happens when you double-click on a PSD file in any of your folders. Does PSP open? Does something else open? Does nothing open?
Hi guys,
I’ve installed ZAppLink correctly as far as I can tell because it’s running but I can’t choose which program I want because the button “Set Target App” is missing!
I’ve set the default for .PSD files to Photoshop CS but ZAppLink always brings up the Preview app which is useless to me. I’ve checked my hard drive and I can’t find the file “ZAppExternalEditorPath.txt” or anything close to it. I’ve checked the folder names and made sure there are no spaces and I’ve downloaded and reinstalled both Zbrush 2.3 and ZAppLink so I know I’m running the most recent versions. I am using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4 Powerbook 1.5ghz. Do you think this is an OS problem? See below for proof of the missing button:
Any thoughts?
Inkling,
Looks like you hadn’t installed rev 2. You can grab it here. And click here for more info and instructions.
theYiffer,
Thanks! You were right. It seems the download on the roadmap page …
http://pixologic.com/zbrush/class/roadmap.html
is still Version 1. Glad they updated it but they should probably also put the update on the main page. The PDF that comes with V.1 mentions the Set Target App button but its not there. Thanks again. This forum rocks!
Hi, I got problem with Zapplink. It works fine when exporting to Photoshop, but when I done with drawing in PS and saving file (and collapsing layers if there more than one) and going back to Zbrush, there is no update is happens (90% of the time) and I dont get the button “Press to accept changes”. plz he-e-elp…
Ok, during my research I found out the way to stabilize a bit anoying missupdates Zapplink<->Photoshop…
to be able to work with Zaplink successful i had to stick to this routine:
IF IT DOESNT APPEARS… ( i was crying at this point and pressing save in PS and checking in Zbrush for futile updates… until I found out that… ) means that:
1.You forgot to Merge layers and Saved PS file and switched to Zbrush…
Work around: Usually you need to press Zapplink again and it will update the bridge between your PS file… and yes you will lose whatever texture you just drew… (Workaround: Duplicate your PS file by Image->Duplicate… Then when you you receive updated file from Zapplink, you just have to drag and drop layer from duplicated file. It should align perfectly when you holding Shift and dragging from one doc to another.) dont forget to merge! and save. go back to Zbrush (Ctrl+tab) and you should receive long awaited "accept changes).
I hope that helps…
PS: Zapplink is awesome stuff!! thanks pixolator team! if only though you could resolve those minor anoyances with updating to PS and back it would be totally awesome! (however, maybe it’s just me who’s having those problem? )
Thanks, I hope it helps to anyone with the same problem…
Hi, I just read through all of this and could not find an answer.
is there ANY way to have this work on a PC (using XP) without setting photoshop to my default app? I really need to have a viewer set as my default for photoshop, and it’s a pain to have to change this back and forth to use ZAppLink.
looks like mac users can do this now, but not PC?
There is no way to do it. Whatever application is associated with PSD files is the one that will be launched by ZAppLink.
When I renamed my ZB folder from “ZBrush 2” to “ZBrush2”, it fixed the problem. Now ZAppLink works.
It’s been awhile. But I did a test this morning with Zapplink and im still getting a crash in ZB 2.03 when I try to pickup the canvas (actually when i bring up projection master again). I did get a personal email a couple months ago and sent a detailed log of my system specs, and the error to pixologic but have never heard anything since. The app im linking to is PS2 btw. on OS 10.4.3.
I have noticed that I don’t see my texture in the textures panel… the old one i sent, or the new one brought in from PS. Maybe thats normal not sure.
i havent tried making a new admin account. zbrush is located here /volumes/applications/applications/zbrush2/zbrush2.app
so its buried one folder in on the volume, not directly in a folder when at the root of the drive. not sure if thats the issue. I removed the spaces from the folders and the app names. Juts about everything on the drive has read/write priviledges. Would there be anything on my boot drive, the OS is on that would need permissions? my ZB app is on a partition.
I was hoping that there would be a Rev3, or when 2.5 comes out all the new “plugins” would be fully intergarted into the app and things will be solved.
Are any other mac users having issues still?
