Quake Project: Monster Models for Quake Mod

i see what you mean about this focal …now that you mention it i remember seeing my focal suddenly going negative and since then, even if i raise it up , there are still some freaky stuff going on!..anyway. i managed to get a decent work on this monster even with that problem…(just posted a thread with him or he’ll never find his place on any and just finish in the bin like so many others :slight_smile:

First off, sorry for the lack of updates, this guy wants to fight me. Maybe when I get some time, I’ll make a better base mesh for this kinda thing. I will post some pics once I get him to a more presentable state.

Now, Abe, I’m sorry to hear about your focal shift freak out. ZB does that to me sometimes when I get bold, and try my $20 piece of **** tablet, then switch back to my reliable mouse. There was an adventageous ZB freak out that happened to me a little while back, where it saw my mouse as a tablet, and I was able to get some crazy tablet-like work done. No pressure sensitivity, but the brushes kinda acted like it was there. Weird.

And yeah, you could almost say that my personal stuff was a female issue. But not a breakup, or anything like that. It’s stupid, and I refuse to let it get to me.

On another side note, your thread will get more traffic if you up the pics to the ZBC server, so people will see them in that row near the top. Folks are more likely to click those pics, than just a thread.

I knew this guy was gonna be another Hellknight… I’ve made 3 bases for him today, and all but one suuuuuuuuuuuck. I’m just not sure how to approach the process with this guy. So no updates today, sorry. I’ll try harder tomorrow. :cry: :o

This problems of yours reminds me way too much mines a few months ago…I really wish you luck as i know how stupid and silly things can be :stuck_out_tongue:
i didn’t know for this server thing…but it’s kind of better that way…ill probably put a more advanced /detailed one on thge zb server…for now that will do :wink:

dont push yourself for the hellknight!trying too hard just keeps the inspiration runnign away…sometimes starting of nothing (just a line on a zsphere) and you might end up with something you didn’t expect (that’s how this monster ,and most of my fictional stuff starts anyway ;))

I think you’re right, Abe, pushing things is just gonna make them more difficult. I just need some new perspective on the design, and I think I can come up with something kinda cool instead of trying to completely copy what the original was.

And yeah, stupid and silly pretty much covers it… High school-like bull**** is a little stupid when you’re pushing thirty, and trying to impress people. I am thirty, and a little too old for that type of thing. Some people, though… :lol:

Welcome back Pete! And thanks for the comments. Yeah, I’ll be taking a small-ish break, nothing big, just a couple of hours, and get back to work. I think one of the things that’s been tripping me up is I’m not as fast at regular sub-d modeling in Max as I am in ZB, and I want results NOW! So I get frustrated when that doesn’t happen. Taking a deep breath, and just giving up to the process should help that a bit. :wink:

So till then, I’ll watch a movie, or play a game, or something. :smiley:

Sorry for not posting any updates, I’m still not comfortable showing the model yet, as it’s still pretty early in the process. Almost all of this guy is gonna have to be done with traditional sub-d modeling, and that takes me a bit longer to get really going (as demonstrated with the Hellknight).

I will be doing my best to get this guy to a presentable state soon, and as soon as that happens, I’ll post an update.

On the mod side of things, we have joined up with another team, and they will be helping us out. They’ve already helped me out a lot, as they already had the weapon models done, and in-game, so I don’t have to do them. I’m really not one to shy away from work, but all these monsters AND all the weapon models is just a bit much for one guy to tackle. I think there’s still some positions that need filled, like animator, and maybe a texture artist. It is a mod, so no pay for it, and it’s only for people who are SERIOUS about helping out. People saying they wanna work with us, then getting the work, and disappearing is getting a little old.

Alrighty, I’m having more problems with zb again. I edited some pants in ZB, and when I import them into Max, almost all the normals are flipped, except for a couple of patches. I’ve checked every option I can think of, and nothing helps. Does anyone know what’s going on here? And more importantly, how to fix it?

Ok, here’s what I’ve got for the Enforcer as of now. I know it’s not that hot right now, but I’m still working on it. You can really tell where I used ZB, and where the refular sub-d is. I don’t know, but it seems that regular sub-d is so bland looking, I’ll fix that soon, though.

Anyway, I wanna add some more stuff to him, but I am kinda limited by the low poly I’ll have to make. It’ll take a lot of work to get that low poly version to look good, but I think I can do it. :wink:

Nice job with the enforcer sofar…I like his head[or should I say helmet:p ]
I guess this is in “very early” stages right now…and I see some weird folds in the pants…esecially the “horizontal” ones…were they intentional ??

And did you get the inverted mapping thingy of his legs fixed ??

Thanks guys. I know this guy isn’t that impressive, but I am working on him, and hopefully he’ll look better by the time I’m done.

Sriram, I talked to you last night, and you know what happened with this guy. But just so everyone else knows, I had to delete the pants, and try again, as the flipped normals problem would not go away, and either no one saw the question I posed, or no one knew how to fix it. But deleting them and starting over worked like a charm. :smiley:

Abe, I still have about 9 characters to go, including the 2 bosses. I have more time left as I don’t have to do the wepaons anymore, so that should help with this guy. I think the design works, I just need to add some detailing to it, and make snazzy. I’ll post more as I get them done.

Real quick update for you guys. I’ve started in on some of the armor details, and I gave his mask some more details. All around more detail coming. :smiley:

Sweet! I assume he will have eyes later?

Actually, no, he will not hev eyes that you can see. He’s got a face shield that covers his entire face, so no facial features for this guy.

I’m not too sure what else to do with this guy, I really wish I was a better character designer, and could make impressive designs… Ah well, I guess I’ll have to do what I can with what I got. :smiley:
