Pixologic Release - ZApp Link (Windows & Mac)(Updated Rev2 for Mac on Oct 17th, 2005)

please delete.thx

It will paint a bitmap. What you use this bitmap for (texture, alpha, bump, displacement, etc) is up to you, but count on an extra step or two after returning to ZBrush.

Greate stuff!!! First I was ask my self: What they wont with this, when ZBrush have everything. But this is very fast solution for texturing. So, guys you are very incredible.:+1:
Here is my wip textured with ZApp Link:

Modeled ZBrush, textured in Photoshop & ZBrush(ZApp Link), rendering in Maya.

look good mate :+1: the light is a bit of but I know is wip still

Are you using a high res image for projecting? If you are using a low-ish res you’re coming against the same problem I did. But looking good so far.

Wayne…

I’m a new user of ZBrush 2, let alone ZBrush 1.55. I followed the instructions on the first page of this thread and made a folder called ZPlugs inside the ZScripts folder inside the ZBrush 2 folder. The ZApp Link button does not show up in the Documents palette. The only way I can get it to work is when I go to the ZScripts palette and load the ZApp Link script. Then the button shows up in the Documents palette. But when I finish a session and restart ZBrush, I have to go to the ZScripts menu and reload the ZApp Link script all over again. Further, it does not remember where Photoshop is located.

I’ve downloaded the plugin twice now, thinking that maybe the first download got corrupted somehow. But the second download behaves just like the first time.

Any helpful ideas, anyone?

drop contents from the zapplink folder you unzipped to this:

Pixologic\Zbrush2\Zstartup\Zplugs

you have your zplugs in the wrong place move it too the Zstartup folder.

EDIT: oops had to edit cuz I typed the wrong plugin name…dohhhhh.

I tried as you suggested.

I have a folder called ZScripts so I made the ZPlugs folder inside it and then moved the ZApp Link folder inside that one. Nothing. Then I renamed both using lowercase (Zscripts and Zplugs). Nothing.

Then I moved the contents of the ZApp Link folder (the zsc file and data folder) out of the ZApp Link folder and up one level to the ZPlugs folder. Success.

Must be how the script was written, because the Multi-displacement script works just fine inside its own folder. Weird.

I come from a Poser background. Poser ‘runtime’ hierarchies get very very complex, so unzipping files usually involves having the ‘Use Folders’ option turned on in WinZip, so that files are placed in the folders specified. This makes life much easier, as you only need to point WinZip at the root directory and everything unzips into the correct place. Some ZB plug-ins aren’t zipped up properly to use this facility. I wish they were, but the files are not normally very large and the ZB hierarchy isn’t complex, so it’s no big deal. It has thrown me a couple of times, though.

After Christmas I’ll write a quick tut and put it in the Tutorial forum on the subject of zipping multi-part files, for easier distribution and unpacking.

generally speaking zaplink is rocking my world. i just love watching my textures ‘pop’ onto zbrush from photoshop…

super-sweet workflow.

now a question. is it possible to work at a higher resolution than screen resolution? i’m currently texturing at 4k. i run zbrush at 1500x1100 screen size. right now i’m zooming in pretty close to the area i want to work on and zaplinking. this way what i get in photoshop is still pretty high res because i’m only working on say a quarter of the object at a time.

but this is my workaround, sort of forcing the zaplink workflow to 1:1.

is there a better way? did any of that make sense?

cheers,

Just to clarify, the image you’re pulling into Photoshop is less than 1500x1100? Hmm. You’re probably stuck with that – I think Projection Master is 1:1 by nature, though maybe v2.5 reworks this with Zapplink in mind. Maybe.

That said, try playing with the AA:half button – it might double your effective resolution. Also, hiding all your palletes will give you a little more real estate onscreen. You can save custom UIs to automate the toggling back and forth if that ends up helping.

Please report back if these suggestions are useful or not – I suspect I’m about to run into the same issue myself!

nah… that’s pretty much what i thought. (but the ideas are very much appreciated, thanks.)

i’m actualy using 1500x1100 canvas size so what i get in photoshop is pretty big. the whole workflow is really quite nice and i don’t really feel limited i was just sort of wondering.

i guess the only way pixologic could change it would be to let you ‘stamp’ greater pixel dimensions than your canvas. i have no idea how difficult/possible that would be.

as near as i can tell the only limitation is that you can’t make large-scale high-res texture changes. fortunatly i began texturing in photoshop using high-res photos as a start so i haven’t lost any detail, i’m only using zbrush for fixing seams, touchups, etc.

cheers,

Well, that changes things. Try upping the canvas size to 4K and see if that doesn’t give you the detail you’re looking for in Photoshop!

ah… (lightbulb)

for some reason i was operating under the erroneous assumption that zbrushes canvas couldn't be any larger than your screen size. (i don't really know why i thought that, it's pretty silly really.) so now i can texture at whatever resolution i need. thanks for the nudge in the right direction. (still so much to learn... brain getting full...) cheers,

Working at 4K does slow ZBrush down a bit. You’ll want those high resolutions for Zapplink, and for compositing your final image, but the resolution you were working at is probably more appropriate for the earlier phases of your work.

(Just remember to clear the canvas and re-draw models onto the screen when you change resolution – that can take some getting used to)

I have instlled Zapp plugin into my Z 2.0 Plugin directrory several timesI then drew somthing on the screen as a test and proceeded to the Document pull down to test the ZApp. The Zapp link interface, nor the buttons are there. What’s wrong

As far as I can tell all the files are in the right places and I have downloaded the app twice from two different sources. This is not an uncommon symptom as some other plugins, but not all, that I have installed don’t seem to function also.

Are some of the various plugins that are around only compliant with 1.55 and not 2.0, as is the case with many plugins for 3dStudio Max and its version sensitivity Is it necessary to have Photoshop installed first? Will the plugin work with Paint Shop Pro also Must those programs be loaded on C: drive for the program to find them, or can they be on another drive

I may be repeating things you already know so please bear with me.

If you want a ZPlugin to be available at startup it should be placed in the /ZStartup/ZPlugs folder. If you do not have a ZPlugs folder you need to create one. That means you might be installing into d:/ZBrush2/ZStartup/ZPlugs , for example.

Next you should ensure that the .zip file containing the zplugin is extracted with the folders intact. So if the .zip file contains folders they must also appear when extracted. How you do this depends on which program you use to extract .zip files.

If Zplugins still do not appear in ZBrush you might want to check your keyboard for a sticky SHIFT key. If you hold SHIFT while starting ZBrush it will only load the default ZPlugins, not anything in /ZPlugins/ZPlugs. This can be used to troubleshoot errors reported by users.

If you are still not able to start ZBrush with ZStartup Zplugins loaded you can try and load them manually. Press CTRL + SHIFT + L and select ZAppLink.zsc . At this point you can also see if the file is corrupt. The Load Zscript dialog will show an image or a ZBrush logo when you select a zscript or zplugin. If it does not there is something wrong with your download.

Most Zscripts written in 1.55 work in 2.0 but 1.55 did not have ZPlugins. So no need to worry about. Photoshop is not necessary to start ZAppLink.

 i have done whats says on the intruction but the nothing that i put in the ZPlugs folder appears, i tried other plugins and they didint either ehlp please, i got a PC/ i pt some screen shots so that u can see, that i have done it correctly

You do NOT need a folder “Zapplink” like on your first screenie.
What you need at this position are ONLY the files that are within the archive.
There’s TWO of them(three within the archive, but you might want to put the pdf to a more convenient place.).

Hi, forgive me if I’m not falling all over myself but I would really like to try these plug-ins that all of you are raving about BUT cannot even open the link, let alone download it…
Keep getting this error message for the past week. is it going to be fixed anytime soon. Does anyone know cos its really frustrating…

Clare
