Pixologic Presents: Action Hero Contest

Thanks for the the response but Im still not clear on the answer you gave me and maybe i wasnt clear on my question, i wanted to know if i could post up a quick scetch and make some minor changes to the costume as the contest goes on?

I am not saying I have no skills. I am saying that I am new to zbrush, and sculpting. What I meant was I will be learning as I go, and hopefully soaking up lots of new things. I don’t think I will have much to add to anyone’s thread other than oohs and aaahs. In the unlikely event that I end up creating a fantastic sculpt that is up there with the best, will by inability to add to other people’s WIPs go against me is what I am asking.

To everybody I know this KILLA K an i hope to see you guys inter this contest!

aurick… I don’t know if this has been answered before but please bear with me…
I am planning to use my entry in another thing later besides this contest and want my model to be as real as I can get it. I would like to know if it is alright to make textures, uvs, or alphas using like Photoshop and zb. I haven’t seen too many realistic textures without using Photoshop and uvs made in another app. Poly paint is fine but not for the real, real stuff. If they are allowed from another app how much will it affect the judging. I was hoping to bring my uvs in with my base mesh and make small alphas and some base textures in Photoshop for like clothing and the start of the texturing for the face and body (after I bring in to zb will use the poly paint and other stuff and will color to texture over those base textures) is this allowed?
I have many alphas made in Photoshop stored in the alpha loader on zb am I allowed to use these or will points be taken off for use of these?

Yes, that is perfectly fine. Your concept is just that; a concept. You can deviate and modify as necessary. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be much point for this to be a WIP challenge.

Yes, you can do this. I’m a bit confused by how PolyPaint is supposedly lower quality than a texture, though. After all, the concept of PolyPaint is that your model has the same resolution as a texture would. So the quality should be the same.

aurick, do you ever sleep?

Or is aurick some kind of next gen intelligent bot?

Interesting, think about an entry.

But when I look at Jeff Miller’s Hero here:

http://www.pixologic.com/contest/hero/rules/,

I have serious doubths.

I think the contest has already a winner.

What can be made better than this perfect work of Jeff ?

Yeah, I guess we gotta hope that Jeff’s gorgeous piece doesn’t qualify, that is great work and sets the tone for the kinda quality and skill that will take home the goodies.

But remember guys, almost ALL of us aren’t going to win jack, some really great work, some absolute bloody masterpieces will go unrewarded… that’s just how it is, coz thousands will enter, and yes, Pixo will doubtless add to it’s fame, user base, and dare I say it: sales figures as a result of this comp. I don’t know if there’s a law against that, but I suspect there would be very few competitions or challenges if there were.

So knowing these things, why would one enter? For myself the plethora of rules will possibly pose insurmountable obstacles. I don’t know much about UV’s or maps of any kind, I mainly model, coz I love modeling, Modeling in Z would have to be listed as my favourite hobby. Also, I don’t know if I’ll be able to do a WIP each week… especially THIS week, and I have no clue how to embed a movie using vb - I’m guessing Visual Basic? Virgin Brides? Vicious Bas… anyway.

The reason I’m going to have a go isn’t because I need a 3D scanner - although it sounds awesome - nor because I want a Cintiq - although god knows there’s not much I want more!

It will be to have fun, and importantly, to learn stuff I might not have got around to learning any other way. Don’t get me wrong, I think the rules are not only a tad Draconian, but a bit profuse to boot, I only found out about the WIP post each week thing a few minutes ago. But I’m sure there are reasons for them all and Pixo have shown themselves willing to help as many people as possible enter even if it means adjusting the rules a tad - not something one sees often. If ever.

For me, I find the movie part the toughest, surely the desired result could be achieved with a bunch of screen grabs? But hell,I might learn something new.

There does however, seem little point in complaining about folks who are trying to get things clarified before they enter, it’s gonna require a fairly hefty commitment to get a really good piece all the way to the end. And it also takes well over an hour to read through all the rules and the entirety of this thread to find an answer to your question. Aurick seems to be handling all queries with aplomb, so leave it to him. (although I couldn’t quite work out his stance towards pirated softs…) Actually, did anyone actually suggest entering with a pirate copy? I musta missed it, but if so the simple answer should have been: ”Well, DUH!“

My final thought before I get on with thinking up the winning concept… Perhaps the Pixologic folks might consider a kind of ”Salon Des Refuses“ thread for those who can’t make the grade, either financially or technically, after the impressionist model, with a licensed copy of the program as the prize?

Don’t need one myself, but this would possibly have the effect of reducing these arguments and the ensuing discord as well as encouraging those who have the talent but not the $amoleans required to take the main prize. It would also serve as a place for those who, for whatever reason, couldn’t meet all the technical requirements to have their efforts seen and keep the main thread/section less cluttered with work that can’t win ‘le grand prix’.

I have no doubt that, as those bewhiskered French folk discovered, such a thread would attract huge interest, uncover a few stars of the future, and undoubtedly suffuse all of ZBC with an overwhelming feeling of collective goodwill, peace, love, understanding, and tolerance for our differences which could quite easily spread to the whole of the internet, and thence to the entire brotherhood of man worldwide, thus bringing an end to war, violence, poverty, intolerance and greed, making our planet an utter Utopia.

Is it really too much to ask? Is it??

On second thought…stuff it. I’m going home. :o

Jeff’s work is stunning, but personally I would rather see the winning superhero be much more unconventional.

Hi everybody…

I´m very new into Zbrush…but that´s not the Problem
I would really like to enter the Contest…
Just for Fun ^^
I read the Rules… but
I have one Question
I come from Germany and my Englih isn´t that good ^^

What is meant with

“Participation in other Artists Threads is a required component” ??

Do I have to give them an Advice? Or can I ?

Or is it enough to tell what I like and what I would do another Way?

And what about my English… ^^ Maybe I can say it with easy Words…
but I can´t express it like I could do it in my Language

Couldn’t agree more Eric, but let us remember that Jeff was working to what I imagine was quite a specific brief, rather than contest rules. A big part of that brief would have been to design a spectacular, if slightly generic, superhero.

Too much imagination on his part would skew the contest. If his guy had a wolf head, eight horns and shot lightning bolts from his arse it would influence what people designed and probably put a lot of people off entirely knowing they’d be hard pressed to match Jeff in full flight. He’d also have been told to come up with amazingly good human anatomy etc. etc, to illustrate to us the kind of thing they want to see while leaving room for OUR imaginations to come up with something even more amazing. A big ask yes, but at least he’s left room!

I hope his cheque is sent out without a moments delay (and don’t doubt it will be) as he has done the job brilliantly.

Merry Xmas all! Yes it’s nearly lunchtime on Xmas day in Australia. It’s a good one too…You’ll enjoy it!

It’s an excellent model and no disrespect meant here but it is essentially Marvel’s Captain America from the Ultimates Universe with some eyepieces added and some colors switched out. Again, it’s a great model in every technical aspect…but it’s not an original character…sorry to go all comics geek here!

With this:

you can win

Hi again Aurick. I’m a bit new to the embeding video thing and just uploaded a pair of videos showing my transpose steps that I wanted to put in my WIP thread. however, Veoh only lists html and a link as sharing options. I don’t see any other code options. So…how do we embed? There must be a way, as I’ve seen other Veoh vids here in the past. Thanks.

Look at that link and sharing options that you see. There’s a long code, which is the actual name/value of the movie. Copy that code.

Then here at ZBC, put the code inside of veoh tags:

Usage {veoh}value{/veoh}
Example Usage {veoh}v1259110nxG5AGjZ{/veoh}

Only you would use [ and ] instead of { and }.

By the way, something really handy is any time you’re composing a message look at the lower left of the page. There’s something that says vB code is on. Click that to be taken to a page that shows all the different codes that you can use in your posts, with examples.

179 (?!?) lessons on how to draw the human figure from imagination won’t help you win anything.

Something this important will require some references, and by the time you get through all 179 lessons, the contest will be over!

Not to mention it doesn’t help with using ZBrush in the least…

I like the way you do:D Very good!

Thanks Aurick! I was expecting the answer to be on Veoh’s end (and I just being a blind fool). Instead, it was staring me in the face here at ZBrush Central…and I was still a blind fool. Thanks bunches.

Hey Aurick have a question for you. It says that the character must be on a pedestal, would it be ok if he is standing or leaning forward on a rock?So say the character is leaning forward at the edge of a cliff ready to pounce on an enemy. Would that be acceptable for a final entry?

This contest looks very exciting. It’s definately peaked my interest. I’ve got a question about the “originallity” part of the character creation, and I haven’t seen it mentioned specifically so far.

I know they’re looking to stay safe from copyrighted characters (Marvel, DC, etc), but I’ve played City of Heroes forever and I’ve got dozens of original characters I’ve created there. Some have tons of backstory and are fairly interesting. Could we use those as a base character design (as long as we stay away from any of the copyrighted CoH characters)?

Thanks,
Todd
