Pixologic Presents: Action Hero Contest

Yes, you can do this. But remember: The more you do directly in ZBrush the more points you’ll get from the judging panel.

It does not have to be powers that have never been seen before. It must be characters that have never been seen before. The character as a whole.

Well, the contest is an exercise in anatomical accuracy. If you can find a way to accomplish that with a cartoon-like style you’re welcome to go for it. But you’ll also risk being seen by the judges as possibly trying to get around the rules. Whatever you do, make it believable.

Your initial post MUST include a concept sketch. Future posts may include sketches for various elements as well.

  • Personally owned licenses: Allowed
  • Company owned licenses: Allowed with approval from your boss
  • School owned licneses: Allowed
The trial version may also be used to start the competition. It may not be used to complete your entry for the very simple reason that I explained in an earlier post: The contest runs twice as long as the trial version.

All that leaves is pirated copies. Are you seriously suggesting that someone using a stolen copy of ZBrush should be able to enter and try to steal prizes from honest folks? Think carefully before you answer, as ZBC – just like the other graphics forums – has a zero tolerance policy toward piracy. Use of any pirated software, ZBrush or otherwise, is grounds for an immediate ban. Same goes for posts that advocate software piracy.

Hey - I have a new question that just came up in my entry thread. A long time ago (like either last year or early this year), I posted a base mesh to the Silo forum and someone wants to use it for the contest. Will that be a problem?

Provided you’ve given permission, no. The base mesh will be treated under the rules just like any other imported base mesh. There must be full disclosure that it was used and the base should be used as a starting point, only. The finished results should be quite different from the base. In this case, the artist should also give you credit in his post for the base mesh.

Baaaa Haaaaaaaaaa…I want to know…at what point does this competition start being fun?

is there suppose to be an environment for the character or is the character suppose to stand on a pedestal?

i ask because when i think of 3d printing it looks more appropriate for it to be on a pedestal.

Thanks. I’ll let him know my answer then.

Thanks for the reply, Aurick. My last post wasn’t directed at you, rather, I’m surprised at responses by other members regarding the issue - including C-Mad who has gone so far as to complain about the people using company-owned software being allowed to enter.

Of course I do not condone piracy, theft of intellectual property, or any type of activity that impacts Pixologic’s ability to thrive and continue their good work. I have not installed any copy of ZBrush, licensed or otherwise onto my laptop since buying it three months ago. It is entirely conceivable that I could have had a good stab at this competition within an eight week time limit, with four weeks devoted to ideation, preliminary research and sketches, and a further four weeks of actual sculpting time.

Aditionally, as alumni of a certain educational establishment, I am granted full access to their 3D facilities for three hours a day, five days per week.

I DO NOT however, feel that I should have to explain this to anyone. My working process would have been transparent, and I find it offensive that people should be regarded as potential criminals and get called up on the issue of piracy.

We all make decisions that are good and bad. Some of those decisions are with money. To assume that everyone with the software looks at $600 as pocket change only shows ignorance on your part. We make priorities in life and most of those people who you are talking about look at the software as a good investment. As an artist you still need to buy supplies, pencils, paper, charcoal, paint, canvas, clay, easels, studio space, brushes, straight rules, sketch books, ink… etc… Are you telling me that you don’t pay for any of these items? Have you been in an art store lately? Ink, paint… most of these supplies don’t come cheep. The point is, these like software are tools that you need as an artist to make a living. If you are not willing to purchase said tools you may get a free ride… it does not mean you will or you are entitled to it.

I can’t believe folks are still arguing over this. It’s a contest. It’s not the election of a government official. The rules are the rules. Enter or don’t enter is what it comes to. If it was some life altering moment, where the fate of a society hung in the balance, I could understand the concern but really, it’s just a contest. You’ve asked your questions, gotten your official answers, move on and be creative sculpting something else if you can’t join the contest.

You have misunderstood me completely. I plan on purchasing the software as soon as I can. As a freshly graduated student, I have relied upon my University for access to ZBrush so far. I don’t intend to get a “free ride”, and I have a special brand of contempt for people who make commercial gains off software they have not paid for.

On the other hand, I disagree with the smug self-satisfaction exhibited by some members here. Not everyone can afford the license -yet. For us, the option of entering using a trial version would have been nice, regardless of the time disadvantage.

They’ve said you can use the trial version to build your sculpt and you’ll need to provide a valid license for the final entry. Seems reasonable that they’d only want licensed people entering. Do what I used to do in situations like this - use it as a learning exercise. Make a wip thread, go through the whole process but do it to better your craft, not to win a prize. The majority of people who will create final entries - and these are people with licenses - are going to walk away with nothing but the knowledge they gain from the wip process. I’ll likely be one of them but that hasn’t stopped me from going through the process anyway. So really, what’s this about for those of you complaining? The prizes you had like a 1 in 500 chance of winning? If so, you would have entered for the wrong reasons anyway.

Kazpah, your wriggling is becoming increasingly entertaining so maybe I should just let you beat yourself into submission, but since you quoted my post as an example of:

all of you who have paid for the software and try to berate less fortunate individuals for not having done the same, I’m glad you have managed to find a cosy spot on your collective high horse. As a bottom feeder, all I can do is congratulate you for living in a silver-lined reality where $600 amounts to little more than pocket-change.

Then I think you fully deserve an answer. Unfortunately for you I have much better things to do, including trying to come up with something good for this competition which indeed requires time and dedication. You may therefore have to live without it, even because I cannot think of one appropriate way to answer you, not at least a polite one.
So, as an apology for not answering you the best I can do is suggest that the next competition runs around the subject of the young wannabe artist with a ballooning sense of self-entitlement and an ego to match. Brilliant minds that since the times of Whitnail and I have not been celebrated enough. This neglect has been a collective mistake, and as you so eloquently demonstrate, urgent action is badly needed.

is there suppose to be an environment for the character or is the character suppose to stand on a pedestal?

i ask because when i think of 3d printing it looks more appropriate for it to be on a pedestal.

ALSO, can there be two characters like a hero killing a villain ?

I don’t even know if I should bring this up, but it’s on my mind…

My understanding is that there will be a great deal of emphasis on human anatomy for this contest, yet many entries have costumes that severely hide these details, or some that don’t seem very human at all. I would really hate to see these artists’ hard work count against them, if the judging is as stringent as it could be. Just food for thought for other contestants. I find it difficult to imagine heroes in this day as having to wear spandex bodysuits, but they do show the human form much better than armor would.

Also, for the moderators, this question: Our participation in other artists’ threads is a required component, but how active should that participation be? To be perfectly frank, I can’t always think of something to say for each entry, where others really capture my interest. Should I just wait to see if there are tips and advice that I can offer, but keep personal opinions to myself? Sometimes that is the best way to go, no offense intended to anyone specifically. Will this limited participation hurt me, or is it enough?

Just using this thread to think aloud. I certainly change my mind about things frequently, so I don’t mean anything bad by either paragraph above.

Thanks,
Slosh

all of your questions have already been answered

Quality is more important than quantity.

Hmmm. What if your a complete noob, and have very little to say that could be helpfull to most of the people in these parts that are fantastic artists?

A complete noob probably has very little chance of winning, so what does it matter how much he participates in the discussions? Just sayin’

Transpose movie required? Transpose is with ZBrush 3 only right?
