Just had a thought based on the last question. Does this mean that we cannot use subtools? Sorry if this has already been said. Working myself up to enter this contest.
Thanks for the quick replies, everyone. That helped me out alot. I guess I don’t quite understand the 3d printing process, because I still wonder about how it prints sections that hang down into mid-air. For example, an icicle. Of course, I’m sure this is something that they have worked out and I don’t really need to know how it’s done. But I do understand what you meant about the eye sockets and such. Basically, if I drop it into a bucket of water, will it fill the figure??? And of course, the sockets would have. Thanks again!!!
In regards to those who whine about the license stuff, I would like to point out a fact that pixologic has always been generous to a fault when it comes to providing stuff to make zbrush as accesible to amateurs as it does to pros. How many times do we see aurick replying to a troubleshooting thread even when the question has been asked a zillion times in other places? Or the extensive help webpage that has been meticulously organized and up to date? Or the turntable gallery and the numerous up to date patches?
comparing my experiences with windows, motion builder, HP customer support, adobe premiere and other ridiculously expensive softwares which pipe about customer support and ignore you once you bought their stuff… zbrush willingness to go the extra mile is the exception in the midst of huge corporations trying to squeeze every little penny out of us…
Please be reasonable, if there is no license requirement, all the bootleggers who didn’t pay a dime would flood this competition. What if the winner is a bootlegger? Wouldn’t that be unfair to the other contestants who has been loyal customers all along? Their money is what makes zbrush so good in the first place.
If microsoft held a halo competition, they would ask all contestants to buy a beta version of windows vista, with a beta version of halo, complete with 12 months of subscribtion to microsoft’s new gaming magazine. And after the contest is over, they’d flood your email with advertisements to upgrade your OS to vista millenium to avoid crashing problems.
I just fail to see what’s the point in arguing about the license…
Speaking as a hobbiest, who bought the programme license, I can’t see why anyone would expect to be able to enter a competition with out owning the programme.
Mind you, none of that affects the fact that I cannot, at this time, think of any superhero or villain.
what about subtools? Do we have to not use them for this then?
The presence of subtools does not create any problem for 3d printing, as long as the subtool meshes intersect with one another as part of one body.
I should really bite my tongue but I often fail to do so, on the pretty incredible issue of people upset for the exclusion of holders of non licensed copies from the competition and with all the possible understanding for the talented people that cannot yet afford to pay for a license, the fact remains that it’s through sales that Pixologic exists so long live Pixologic and good luck to them to prosper and sell more in the future.
Those that have some good reason to use non licensed copies can still post their work and learn and improve just like anybody else. Pixologic has a duty towards itself to try and sell as much as they can, and if one positive aspect of running competitions is that they get a few more people to license their copy then it’s all good for them and consequently for all Zbrush users.
Hmmm.
One question.
Can I use other 3D program to create UV map?
I have never posted any of my work but this contest has certainly got my attention. The specific rules and regulations or restrictions (whatever you want to call them) injects an incredible amount of professionalism into this project. I have been sculpting in the toy biz for many years and there are alot of rules that we have to follow and consider from the outset of all projects: client demands, production feasibility, etc. I see the rules no different than professional guidelines. If anybody is looking to work in the industry as a professional you will immediately be faced with guidelines that restrict your “creativity”. But hey, that is the nature of commercial art, right?
This is an opportunity for those with the fortitude to ramp up specific Zbrush skills and add to your “mental” skill sets a production workflow mindset.
Just my opinion.

Create your superhero designs in seconds!!!

Are we able to add a second character for a more dramatic pose? like a fight scene perhaps. ( i really hope this wasnt in the rules already cause then id feel stupid cause i read them pretty well.)
So I think it´s better to make just one character
i didnt think of it that way. your probly right. thanks.
Thats a job. You get paid to do it. Im happy to put up with client specifications too, if its a job, and Im getting a paycheck. For an exhibition like this, you get jack. I could design another crappy Web 2.0 chrome logo if I want “practice working with stipulations”…and get a guaranteed prize…a paycheck.
I do this stuff for fun, as an escape from those kind of client situations.
Im perfectly in favor of contest regulations for these sorts of things, but this one seems to have gone a bit beyond the typically accepted “industry standard” for community WIP challenges.
In any event, we now have 10 people “whining” about the “whiners”. for every one person who actually “whined”. Put away your soapboxes, and start working on your entries if you’re so enamored with all the hoops.
I have 2 questions
1: has already been asked
Hmmm.
One question.
Can I use other 3D program to create UV map? LeXuSMalus
I would also like to know if I can use a texture map made in Photoshop and then transfer poly paint and other coloring, in zbrush, over the Photoshop made texture?
- What if the dynamic pose consisted of the superhero in the last moments killing his nemesis. The evil doer not moving and on the ground can I do that? Can I make him a part of the base?
Idea for Pixologic: since some seem to be a bit upset about the people with no license of their own and still being able to enter through work, school, or other licenses of zb that they didn’t pay for…in which I do agree with these “a little upset people”…I am one for I paid for mine…maybe you could make them put in their post that it is not their license and maybe a really good finished product would win a zb program just a thought. I only say this cause we are the reasons that they are able to have these contests…we put our money into their company through their software. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for new modelers and new artists, and in these days and age a buck is hard to come by…so I would still want them to enter.
So non license have a chance to win ZB license…and not be entered for other stuff. Just a thought…Oh and by way I was very happy to see that a great program was still cheep to come by only $600 for zb - over $4000 for 3dsmax - near $1000 for just a renderer platform license you do the math… and please stop going after ZB for their prices I think they are very fair even in this time and age.
Try no matter what, you never know what can happen, but you will never know if you don’t try. If nothing else, this will be a learning experience all of you will benefit from. I’ve never won anything in my life but I will say once I tried a couple of zb contests (of course I didn’t win) but I did win the knowledge, experience and just the sheer pleasure of actually finishing something…you want to be artists then create and have fun for art should be your passion and nothing should stand in your way.
Now on to zb and stuperheros (jk) whooohooo…
so what about using more than one basemesh, or to be appending basemeshes in as subtools as you go, like a simple hat base to start off from? is this fine, as long as your base mesh is not the real end result?
Well what can i say .I am new to z brush and this community. I like to take part in this . I will be using the trial version of Zb
. if i collect some money by the end of jan ,will try to buy the lisence.
Please make it clear for me: although there are marvel heroes shown as examples, the entries must be portraying a hero/heroine/villain/villainess using totally “new”, not yet discovered superpowers (thus probably lame like the mapfolding or the pizza-de-olivator man)? Or what level is Marvel holding the copyrights? Is there anything Marvel did not have on their list already? Even omnipotence can be found on their menu.
This might be a stupid question…Just because I haven’t read the guidelines thoroughly yet. Does the character or hero have to have realistic features or can they be cartoony?
Felix
can we post WIP of or sketches ? I ask this because i have my character and back story already and i want to post asap so that i can my concept up before some one else comes up with the same idea…
I fail to see what you find so “incredible” about this issue. As though its somehow “incredible” that non-license holders would seek to take part in this contest and subsequently feel miffed about being dropped at the first hurdle?
Pixelogic are major players in the worldwide VFX and games industries. The concept that they would try to wring out a few dozen extra sales from struggling amateur artists in this manner is astonishing. I’m quite taken aback by the petty thought process involved in even mentioning license ownership in the official rules.
To all of you who have paid for the software and try to berate less fortunate individuals for not having done the same, I’m glad you have managed to find a cosy spot on your collective high horse. As a bottom feeder, all I can do is congratulate you for living in a silver-lined reality where $600 amounts to little more than pocket-change.
Hey guys this is my first post. I wondering if we could post WIP of are character art work? I’m asking because I already have the background and powers of my name/character and I want to post ASAP and I want to really flush out a costume design…
