painting methods - let´s paint together and have fun (page 3)

i did some reworking on my warrior after i thought some time on what ed_the_atom spoke about. and i think i understand now  i tried to bring that into the image. so this is definitely my final version (as i cannot stand to look at him any longer  ). unfortenuately the image is a little blurry, but thats from jpg, the original is crisp.

when i started this thread, i never have dreamed that i could create some reasonable painting. and now i got this, which i am quite happy with  i know that i have to learn a lot, but this is so much fun for me. that i could go so far that was only possible because i got here so wonderful help.

thank you michael, for your encouraging words, and for the many many tips and tricks and the zscripts you gave me. in particular, i want to thank you for helping me with the smudge tool. i now see its potential, and love it more with every brush stroke i do with it.

thank you ed_the_atom, for giving me so valuable things to think about, and for the help on the metal painting. and i hope you will come back here with your painting of the blue lady.

thank you grub, for the “eyes” and for doing your prince zelf here.

and thank you frenchy, for all those wonderful tutorial links. the last one was particularly good, as there are so many resources.

Hi Kokoro I have admiring this art work masterpiece project in its evolution …this work comes evolving as the best wines of the world evolve…¡¡¡
Beutiful and congratulations¡¡¡

thank you andreseloy. i enjoy your comparisson with wine, as i am a very big friend of good wine

Kokoro, well done on your final vintage update, I’m looking forward to your next works
Stoney, I’ve been dabbling with the spraybrush a bit, It’s a handy tool all right. :+1:
Andre, thanks for encouraging us

I’ll be getting back to some more Zelf action soon

Hey Doris, you learned what you needed to learn, and your next painting will benefit from the learning… :+1: :sunglasses: :+1:

Grub…Remember you can use that Stroke with Highlighter and Shading Enhancer brushes too… Great for realistic ‘pseudo-specularity’ effects, and all brushes with a ‘diagonal’ in their icon have two functions, depending on whether you hold the ALT key down or not…I do a lot of painting with these brushes, and seldom use plain paintbrush tools except to add colour which I will modify with these later in the process… :sunglasses:

Yeah, thanks Stonecutter. I’ve been using the highlighter brush a bit too. Heheh, I remember you telling me that tip a while back- don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten.

mary and roonie

my first portrait, done with a photo as reference sticked to the side of my monitor. i think i got roonie quite right, yes thats him with his faithful always a little sad look. mary however, looks a little different, something wrong with the proportions …sigh … but i think i catched the atmosphere of that particular moment, so i am too afraid of reblocking her face as i do not know if i can get the atmosphere right again. nevertheless i am quite happy with the result and it was fun to do.

121 welcome, in particular if you notice something wrong or i could do better next time, please let me know.

i was too afraid to do this painting as wip here in the thread, as it could have easily been, that i totally fail. but now, as its finished i like to share a few steps :

  1. sketching with zscetcher, on half the desired size.
  2. filling in first colors amd indicating shading by light. this is done on a second layer with basic material tweaked to transparent=-100, ambient=100, diffuse=0. the lines of the scetch faintly shine through, the colors are a little washed out due to this material, i often switch between “preview render” and “flat render mode” here to check colors.
3 changed the color of marys face to more normal, corrected the top of her head too, added more shading
  3. removed the sketch layer, put flat material, resized to double size. as there were no details yet, quality remains, and i had saved time  when blocking in the colors on a smaller canvas size… the flat material brings the colors correctly. using the colorizer tool with low rgb setting i made roonie less green
  4. so far mainly painted with paintbrush and smudge tool, my new friend. now i use shading enhancer to refine the lightning, adding a little texture to marys skin (with colorspray stroke), and add the fur and marys hair.

Hi Kokoro
Very well done and sensitive portrait!
And great tut !
Why have you don’t make a Reccord Script ?
It’s always a big pleasure to see a painting growing and showing method of creation in duration !

Maybe because you have make a multi-session ?
I don’t know if you can “merge” some script?
I shall ask this on the Technic forum
Have happy Painting (with Zbrush of course
Pilou

Beutiful work Kokoro¡¡¡
Congratulations.

Frenchy Pilou I think this could be the script "pause delay"pausedelayscript.zip
Thanks for your attention

Very nice Kokoro, I wish I could draw even remotely as well as you. Unfortunately even sad Ronnie, with two paws tied behind his back, outmatches me  Great thread you started here.

Wish I could see your posts Ed, you know how it is, if you are denied something you just want it more.

A lovely picture, Kokoro. :sunglasses: I think you’ve done a fine job. If you look back at your picture in a couple of days time and compare it with the reference, you’ll probably notice what you need to address.

To me, there’s nothing major- perhaps her left eye (on our right) is a little high up, you might be able to correct it by cutting out the eye with the grabber tool and pasting it over, which will minimise painting corrections. :+1:

Sometimes it’s handy to mirror your picture, as imperfections tend to jump out at you with the change of perception.

TV Eyes- don’t worry about your lack of skill, we’re all on some learning curve or other. I’d like to see you participate.

Beautiful Doris… :+1: :+1: :+1:
This is as close to an oil painting style as I’ve seen in ZBrush to cover the technical comment, and to the important thing, the feel of this…I find this evocative and sensitive to your subject matter, and to me that’s more than enough. But I also really like the straightforward style of traditional painting you used…
Well done! :sunglasses:

Koroko

A fine example of representative art or expressionism at its best. I wouldn’t change a thing…it is a well written piece of poetry. It achieves (and more) all it needs to.
I would not change a thing. Proportions when you reach a level such as this do not need addressing. Instantly one sees what has been captured. In a sense the girl and the dog carry the message. And the message is the point. Excellent I say.

I shall post my images back when I get them all sorted and all stages finalised.

wow, thanks to all. i am overwhelmed.

frenchy, i think you would have been bored to death  the painting took all together about 20 hours, in several sessions of course. i paint very slowly, use a lot of undo redo undo redo… very boring to watch …

thanks grub for the tip with the grabber tool. i will not apply it here, but keep in mind for later use… and the mirroe thingy, i try out immediately…

and ed_the_atom, i am glad you will bring your posts back.

great picture kokorro , love the sad look on the dog. I had a spaniël dog and he had those sad eyes too
(we had to put him to rest though , he got too old and couldnt walk anymore)

Hi Kokoro, mirroring does the trick, especially for those perfectionists.(I speak for myself)

Excellent images! I am so impressed with the art displayed here!

deevee, than come and join in ! you will see its fun.

the namek, yes i also fall for these kind of sad eyes…

grub, i tried that mirror. it is amazing. as soon as the image flipped i saw what you pointed out with her eye, and realized the flaws in the proportions, i made her nose a tad to long and her forehead a tad too short… thanks again for this valuable trick. though i do not know how it works it is wonderful.

For the newcomers !
Here Zadd is Off but of course you can use it with Zadd On + Mrgb On
Zbrush can work in classical painting with the deepth negative or positive like real painting muddy and dripping
Have happy and fun painting!
Pilou
PS The tip of the palette is for minimize the way of this poor mouse or graphic pen
Pss What can you see on the Canvas ?
A mountain landscape ?
A somnolent mammoth ?

 a YETI!! I knew that they are no mystic beings!! What I did not know, they are using some kind of patch-work blankets against the cold!!

And Pilou >> ever tried to paint with highlight and shading enhancer?? Fill your canvas with a middle-tone color, choose diffrent alphas (forgot: set the shading enhancer to somewhat minus - 60 for a start  ). The result will be not quite as colorful as your example - I like it a lot - but interesting!!
