painting methods - let´s paint together and have fun (page 3)

inspired by the recent research activities here in zbc and by the wonderful paintings of southern, i thought i also try to paint in zbrush. before, i tried several times with photoshop, but could not get somewhere. now with zbrush, it looks at least as if i could learn painting

so, this is my first digital painting. well, i obviously have a lot to learn, but i think the technique i used is interesting for itself, so i like to share.

  1. fill a layer with flat material and white color. use paintbrush and blue color (rgb only) and draw face. (blue is used to distinguish it from the grey in second step)

  2. create new layer, fill it with basic material and grey (rgb=128,128,128). turn off “render all layers” and tweak transparency of material : transparency =-40, curve = 1 at left hand side, drops linearly down to 0 in the middle and stays = 0. now the layer lets see trough the blue drawing (i tried to mimic here photoshop kind layer)

now use shading enhancer brush to lighten respectively darken as needed.

  1. delete layer with blue drawing and fill the grey layer with flat material

  2. more shading-enhancer work

  3. use colorizer brush to paint in color. this puts in the color, but keeps the structure we build on in grey.

  4. use paint brush and draw in additional extras…

in case you find this method interesting, feel free to post your results in this thread.

Looks like you are on your way. I have got to try one of these too. Thanks for sharing!

great walkthrough.
thanks for sharing with us.
i’ll have to give that a go.

Nice painting workflow, K! :+1:
I thought that you might like to see this, because in it I used a very traditional painting approach, and I include a step-by-step of the process I used…It’s based on an old Victorian painting…I hope it gives you some 2D painting ideas… :sunglasses:

(This is done on one layer, and one of the most useful tools in this process was the Smudge brush used on both sides of a line to create sharp delineations…)

thank you so much stonecutter. i downloaded your whole thread, as you explained so well. i love your homecoming. this is very inspiring to try myself - but i need a long way to go. i jump to zbrush …

Hi Kokoro
I love the red cherries
piloou

Hy Kokoro thanks for share your creativity and also thanks to Stonecutter I did not saw this magnifical tutorial until now¡¡¡
Kokoro is possible to you make a script from that tut?
Thanks very much

Thanks Kokoro…I’m glad you found it useful…
Here’s another one for you, and this one is STILL in the works…I never worry about the time I take in any piece, so I’m still adding to this, and when I finally finish it I will post the result…
http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=005905

In this one, I used the ‘Shading Enhancer’ a lot, and if you want I can show you how to do this…It involves filling the background with very dark shades of color, and then using the shading enhancer brush to bring up the colors…It’s great for space scenes for instance. The trick is to turn up the contrast in the color adjustment while you paint the colors, and then returning them to normal values…This makes the background look black, no matter what colors you use, and then the shading enhancer brush brings out the colors…This enables you to make a ‘nebula’ or any other gas or smoke effect…
Let me know if you’re interested and I can show you how to do it…

Here’s an example of what I mean, as shown in a detail of the link I posted above…Most of this was done using the shading enhancer and the above technique…

Another thing to remember is that if you ‘zoom’ in really close, you can paint 'pixel-by-pixel for GREAT detail…

Let me know if you want a little tut on the method…

EDIT:Somehow my original thread has ended up being posted again, and I had no intention of doing that! I am not an egomaniac I assure you, and did not intend to bring up ‘Old News’!

stonecutter, that is wonderful. your lins are very appreciated. i started yesterday trying to paint your method. but no results to show so far.
yes a little tut would be nice. (even though you explained it already clearly, but as adresloy i do love tuts)

andresloy, yes i can do so. but i have to do a new one, as i not scripted this. but i have no time for this this week end. please wait until next week.

Thanks Kokoro is Ok, I wait.

Hey Kokoro!

I’m doing some carving today…(I AM a stonecutter, that isn’t just an internet name… ), so I’ll work on getting a tutorial together over the weekend…

Hey Kokoro…
I haven’t gotten a tutorial ready yet, but I found this script that I did some time back…It produces this image, mostly using the Shading Enhancer brush, and the render panel trick I talked about…

The script is a bit over 200 kb., (266 kb to be exact…), so rather than me zipping it, why don’t you email me at:

[email protected]

and I’ll send you the file…

I think you can get the idea of the technique from this script…
(Anyone else who sees this, and wants the script should feel free to email me for the script as well!

thanks stonecutter, will send the email immediately. looks very interesting.

andreseloy, here you go. the result is somewhat poor, but it shows the technique. paintingskript.zip

Thanks very much Kokoro¡¡¡

ed_the_atom
This is a very well done and the women is as a painting post just fantastic to me¡¡¡ I agree with you respect the interest in other work and technique to learn from it¡¡¡

Congratulations your post is very nice¡

this is an interesting technique. i shall try this also. thanks for sharing ed_the_atom.

Ed these are very nice works. I would have to agree with you. I much prefer the modeling to pushing a bunch of color around. I am becoming quite fond of it and learning to really appreciate it though. I enjoyed your pictures.

kokoro I like this method and have used a similar technique in some of my postings. Well done!

Still cheerful as ever, huh E the A?
I 've done this as well, doing a quick model, snapshotting it, then painting over the result, by importing the image…I think it’s a pretty cool technique, if for no other reason than it sorts out a preliminary light and shadow map for the painter…

(And you NEVER ‘kill’ threads, Man…You always move them along, and add to everyone’s knowledge…You should get out more! :sunglasses: :+1: )

hi ed_the_atom, i enjoy that you share your steps. keep going, this is very interesting.
