Well guys please do not start allover again and get even this post locked , where will we ask questions regarding other softwares if evn this thread gets locked ?
Well, if closing a thread is how they treat customers, then perhaps I shouldn’t have laid down $500 on their software. It does some great things, but I need layers, and posing, and the other 2.5 features as well. I bought 2.0 on the understanding that ‘soon’ was ‘soon’. But the book that MAY be dependent on 2.5’s release keeps getting pushed back. First Feb, now June, how much longer? How much longer will “Soon” be? 1 year? 2 years? 3 Years? I think the window is rapidly closing for Zbrush to remain relevant as a part of not only hobby creators, but as part of big-budget 3d workflow as well.
Will another Siggraph come and go without a peep? If it does, I’ll probably buy mudbox, as I need better mesh and displacement management than what 2.0 provides.
My time frame is ~ 6 months were features like layers, and multiple mesh management will become super-critical to my workflow. Will Zbrush 2.5 be out by then???
Everyone is playing catchup ( even blender ) and Zbrush still seems stuck.
We’ve seen the cool demos, but where are the status reports? Where are the new videos? At least I get a chance to play with Silo 2.0 and provide bug feedback.
If Pixologic keeps standing still, keeps quiet, people will start to leave.
Maybe we should gather the Militia, rush the doors and demand the FREE update! I’ll supply the arms and battlements!
Sorry to much video games today!
Crusoe the Painter alot of people feel the same. I dont mind if i have to wait for the next release, i dont mind if they they dont know when the next update will be, look at silo 2.0 i still dont know when they will be done.
I just think it doesnt take long to make a quick post about the current state. They dont have to mention what they are working on, just to say “we hope by this time but it could go over, and we are reading the forums etc”.
I suspect that pixologic communications are more frequent with ILM than us, and that’s what annoys me because most people who have the software dont work for ILM :).
I love zbrush but hate the ethic of keeping silent for long periods of time.
I really hope the next year will be a big change for pixologic not just software wise but also in the way they communicate with its many users.
Mudbox comes in two flavours: Mudbox Basic and Mudbox Professional. Both versions feature Mudbox’s industrial strength, artist friendly sculpting toolset. Only Mudbox Professional, however, is licensed for commercial work and, as such, offers certain features of greater interest to companies and professionals. For a more comprehensive comparison of features, please refer to the chart below.
This concept of non-commercial has an ominous tone to it. I’d hope it would fail before the industry has us paying an extra fee on all software to use the files we create commercially. Something about this concept just does not sit well with me. Software is a tool. Our work is the intellectual property. Enforcement should be interesting. Are they hiding a marker in the files? Are we supposed to decide beforehand whether or not a model will ever be used commercially? What if a model is done 90% in another program and I take it into to Mudbox for a single tweak. Legally, where does that fall into place? I’m not so sure I’ll even touch this one just yet. This smells to much like a de facto tax.
I agree, they have to change their policy soooner or later. Feature limits are pretty much the only way one can go IMHO. But that’s their muddy business.
Right now, its not out. You cannot even pre-order it. There is no EULA. You donl;t even know if you could re-sell the 700$ Version. Luxology is jumping up and down in the back with a large cardboard sign saying ‘Me to, Me to!!!’ but has nothing to deliver right now as well. Silo… well… It seems to me the Silo friends are entangling themselves deeper and deeper in beta issues. That will take a while till they are stable. 2.5 is ready. Most likely it’s being honed by a select few of production artists to whom we owe a lot when it comes out to the public. That’s good enough for me as progress. Who needs something like the Maxwell Render release catastrophe… All I would like to see is a 2.5 which is as stable and well thought out as 2.0. Plus all the cool functionality.
One could almost write a thriller about all those releases. The stakes are high. The market is small, and no one can take the risk and release something ‘stupid’.
Good for us however ;).

I do not like the non-commercial thing either, even as a hobbiest who could save money with the cheaper price, I feel my creations are mine to do with what I want, plus I feel that they could charge less then $650 for the complete package if they charged everyone the same price. Leave the lower priced version for students.
The idea that over night or even the next year everyone and their brother is going to drop zbrush for mudbox is just irrational thinking. We all know which programs do XYZ better than the one with the top market share…but why does a company not switch asap? Pipelines are expensive to setup, maintain, and develop proprietary tools for. So I think if there was to be a transition away from zbrush- it would be much slower than many think…and pixologic would have to almost move backwards to cause a landslide.
XNA is out… Game Dev for PC’s and XBox.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/directx/XNA/default.aspx
Bye bye other PC game engines…
Lemo
PS:Of course… for XBox you need a subscription service… And I have not read anything about commercial use. Probably MS owns you, your PC, and the Neighborhood you live in when you install and use XNA ;-).
You can’t use the free one for commerical use as far as I know. But I think there is a 90 buck dev kit that you can use for commerical work- and even upload stuff onto XBOX live with. Finding stuff on microsofts site is a “reall joy” though…so I too haven’t looked that deep into it!
It’s kind of nice on one end to have it…but we all know that M-soft doesn’t do anything without a $ around the corner. If it was released by the Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation that might be a different story!
If the Foundation would have released it… we also would have paid for it… Just not upfront… more like ‘already’… lol
Lemo
PS:To drop contents onto the XBOX you HAVE to subscribe… Or it’s PC only…
If you’re doing serious windows development, having an msdn subscription is not a bad idea anyway.
I have no idea what they cost these days though.
edit never mind, the subscription to this looks different. $99 for a year (or $49 for 4 months), and that buys you the xboxability for your games (as already mentioned). Enough to keep the kneebiters at bay.
I’m wondering if Pixologic is waiting for Vista to be released.:qu:
Hey Guys
Which software works best for creating small realistic gif animations for 3d games like waterfall, sea bed, tree swinging, skills and power effects etc etc ?
yep! Lemo did!
The repost was good. I meant to watch it earlier, but it slipped my mind.
So, uh wow. A lot of that looks familiar huh?
Modo sure is enticing isn’t it!
No, not really. It’s price to feature set ratio is too high for me.
Hmm,…
It’s funny, I watched the modo video when lemo posted it the other day.
It shows some really spectacular features, and nobody is talking about it !! we all would have been really excited about it six months ago.
We’re becoming like beaten dogs , hardened against the promises of unreleased software. Not allowing ourselves to become enthusiastic, for fear of being strung along and let down.
20 million polys, . . realtime texturing, . . . layers, . . . .yeah whatever ! . . .
It’s a shame
