Other commercial applications discussion thread

Yes actually I was just messing with it, very intuitive, but it still has a learning curve (like everything). I am impressed with the retopo tools but as with most retopo jobs it still takes a tedious amount of time.

Just to clear things up, I like 3D-Coat quite a bit and voxels seem to have their uses, but to me who works from a pre-viz sketch, I still prefer ZSpheres and extrusion methods, but I’m sure that voxels are a bunch of fun for conceptualizing.

My methods are; sketch - Image planes - basemesh creation - ZB - Animation App.

I’m sure that when (if) I purchase 3D-Coat I will have a specific need for it (most likely the retopo tools) which seem a little easier to use at the moment, but I’m waiting to see what the future releases of ZB are going to provide.

I personally don’t use ZSpheres in their current state much, but ZSpheres II looks like it will change the way I create some things in the future.

I also don’t mind bouncing back and forth from different apps, and I still don’t mind the maps creation process as it stands, yes call me crazy but I’m super technical and detail oriented, not to mention I am a freelance and am mostly not constrained by crazy deadlines.

Autodesk Mudbox 2010 trial is available. You might wanna try it :stuck_out_tongue:

As 3D-Coat creators we ask you not to use the program for making pictures which would increase vices, especially pictures that would provoke dissolute thoughts. We all have responsibility before God and before mankind for everything we’re doing.
that’s awesome …I agree …I would probably say the same given what I now know about the universe from an enlightened perspective.

They know its only inevitable someone will use their awesome tools for mind bending mind rape! The sewer of the internet says hello…its good thing most of them don’t know how use such tools yet Hahaha.

Well, since they didn’t really indicate what kind of pictures they mean, it’s kind of hard to say, and their statement really serves no purpose. Everyone can interpret it any way they want–and, obviously, that’s what they’ve been doing!

But can you imagine a company who manufactures drawing pencils or fountain pens telling people they shouldn’t draw nude women or write curse words with their products??

probably when they have competitors (other apps using voxels) they will be less inclined to that religious requests… and more comercial oriented

You won’t find anything like that in the EULA. But what you will find on the website is “We can not (and don’t want!) control your activity.” It’s funny how often that quote is taken out of context. The author is entitled to his opinion. Whether I agree or not makes no difference, I just enjoy using a great program. I’m just now finishing up a 3 week project done almost entirely in 3D Coat.

Like I said, the statement serves no purpose. Its vagueness just confuses people and invites everyone to read into it what they want.

Right, that’s why it shouldn’t be said out of context. When you read the full text you see it doesn’t make any difference. You can’t blame the author for being vague, it’s the people half-quoting him. Personally I find it mind boggling how people have to focus on the tiny bit of “bad” instead of the vast amount of good (the programs feature set + price).

“As 3D-Coat creators we ask you not to use the program for making pictures which would increase vices, especially pictures that would provoke dissolute thoughts. We all have responsibility before God and before mankind for everything we’re doing.”

This is a rather deep reference to an entire realm of thought. A reference to a great thinker and his values (google Wallace Fowlie). The author of 3D coat is not only a very capable programmer but also seems to a rather well educated individual. For which there are quite a few more indicators. Some quite humorous and cryptic in itself. As complex as the program one might say.

A fact which is not easy picked up by the average heckler…
Lemo

universal modes of thought don’t work…they result in mono culture

In some parts of the world everything in the zbrush central gallery would be an offense to someones god (okay an exageration but not too far from the truth…think about all the anatomical studies.)

what about images of mutations? as far as religious belief is concerned to the best of my knowledge it is the jewish faith which accepts bio technology ( which includes stem cell research and cloning).

What about images of personal thoughts? shall we censor our expressions?
For someone elses god? of which there have been many to say the least through out time.

my point is if we can be told what art to make then it follows that we can be tould what to think…

I’d like to chime in here. I’ve been messing around with 3D Coat and it’s fun and a good program, I probably will pick it up for the retopo tools.

As far as the dudes message to the masses about using his program to promote vice is a little strange and just reflects his guilt at possibly lending to “vice” and “sin”. It’s understandable but also laughable. I mean creating art is just what it is, freedom of expression.

I must say that while I wouldn’t let Pilgways statement affect my purchase decision, I will chuckle when I create some Demonesque or Vampirical creature, or maybe some hot voluptuous female sculpture.

All in all I think that from a business standpoint, putting a statement like that on a products website is just silly.

It does seem silly, but if you’ve got God looking over your shoulder then it could score you some points and a cup of tea with the big man himself in the afterlife.

3D Coat is an awesome program. That’s all that matters to me. And after spending some time on the 3D Coat forums I also learnt that Andrew is a nice guy too.

Lets chalk this up to a giant “who cares”. Like John Lennon says, “What ever gets you through the night, is alright.”

MC

You can follow him on Twitter if you like, though he mostly just posts about software updates every couple days (which is usually pretty exciting as a user).

I’d say that you’re in the clear. He’s referring to more “evil” concepts. More along the lines of 'deranged, pathologically ill… Ready for a counselor… you get the point…

While I hate continuing this topic I think what he was actually referring to is not nearly as bad as some may think. I think what he was asking is that it not be used for stuff like nazi propaganda and other hate related stuff. Which I believe many companies have also asked. He just worded it differently than most would.

Yeah, the Reproductor is cool,it always been a good reference on how a model can be disturbing and also somewhat cool.
But really……this character would not make it into a game.
Really.
A dude with chains and his dang dong hanging in the air.
In metal gear solid 23 maybe.
3DCoat rocks,we are barely scratching the possibilities here(like Zb 1.5 probably was)
Voxels, automatic retopology, shader baking…Lets not kill a beautiful bird in the egg just because programmers are differents and have opinions.

…its not about freedom of art.

Lets not be delusional about freedom of speech here. Anyone making an explicit piece descripting sexual intercourse in Zbrush and posting it here would get removed in a matter of minutes. Yeah,so what!?...this guy's strenght come from his Christian faith,it allows him to work like a superhuman hyperfriendly develloper, all he ask in return is to not use his soft for hate propaganda and porn ...so what!?.. I find this original and refreshing. Anyway we all know 3d porn is made by 47 years old dude with hacked copies of Poser. "We completely realize that many people may dislike the request placed on the official web site and that it may cause less selling. However, our conscious' demand is more important for us than our income." That is what I want to hear from artists even if they are programmers. Same thing when I look for a rock'n"roll band. I dont care about coders working for shareholders suntanning.

I think it’s kind of funny how we all have our different interpretations of what the 3d coat dude is talking about, but to me, yeah,… so if someone want’s to create mega-*****ed Nazis having intercourse while reading the bible then so be it.

While those types of images may not be welcome on the forums I’m sure someone would appreciate it somewhere else.
:o

Yeah,I was thinking like that not so long ago.
But then, there was this big contest on gameartisans(dom war.,comicon ect…you know the drill) where users where called to make a new front character for Nintendo,(Nintendo being one of the sponsors of course)
Then a game artist decided he would make a gigantic dildo as a character.
Of course, the whole thing was very funny.
But I understand why Gameartisans ‘got rid’ of the issue and I wont state they are silly or extremist …sorry for that.
I would like to say they are censoring monolithic extremists…but I cant.
Of course some people like it,some people even like eating feces.
Does that make it worthy of a zbrush sculpt.
Be my guest.
Art has power,Art was deeply used in wwII to make EFFECTIVE hate propaganda. If such art was posted here Pixologic would dissociate from it as far as it can.Would that be silly?
