Doing some polypainting with ZBRUSH this morning…Worked on the tree, and the waterfalls…starting to put the rocks in the waterfalls, to give them more depth and to add a varity to the flow and rhytms of the water as it cascades downward.
Fun polypainting,…ZBRUSH is great for this sort of thing…amongst alot of other things of course…

Spiritdreamer, Glenn, I like this. It is the first image I’ve seen you do here where all the elements appear to create an integrated whole. You always display great talent in your painting and sculpting, but the finished images always looked to me like works in progress or proof of concept tests. This one though is on the way to being a really great piece. Do you work over your pieces using PaintStop, or are you more comfortable with Photoshop?

Cheers,

Rory

Hi Rory…Thanks Man.:)…You are right about the works in progress and proof of concept part that you wrote about my works in here…I have been mainly just trying to come to grips with the program itself, and how it works, and how it might work for the kind of paintings that I enjoy doing…Alot of mostly just experimenting and exploring in this sketchbook, while searching for a technique of creation that I feel comfortable using…I usually end up with a lot of diamonds in the rough so to speak…
But with this new version of ZBRUSH, with the DynaMesh, LightCap and FiberMesh features amongst all the other new features,…my quest has finally reached a turning point I hope,…One where I am actually able to polish up some of these diamonds in the rough that I have accumalated over the past year or so…and maybe even add to the collection some new ones that have been lurking in the far corners of my imagination, while waiting for this exploration and experimentation phase to finally come to a climax of sorts, where and where everything sort of falls into place…At least that is my goal at present anyway.
About your question concerning Paintstop, and Photoshop…I’m not using ether …Just polypainting, and also using the standard alphas with the freehand and drag rectangle brushstrokes, that are on the left side of the screen…nothing fancy…just using the poly paint with the add turned on to build up volume when I need it, and turned off when I don’t want it…like for glazes of color ect…The 2.5D features of ZBRUSH and it’s capabillities is way underrated…I guess that most people using ZBRUSH in this forum anyway, are into the sculpting end of things, and view the painting part as secondary, which makes alot of sense for the goals they are after with their works…But i’m a painter, not a sculptor so my goals are just the opposite,…I view the sculpture as secondary, and the painting part as primary…Different goals…different views…and uses of the same tools.
Thanks for the visit, kind words and thoughts,…and for the inquiry as to my method…I don’t think anyone in here has ever asked me how I am doing what I am doing…so I must be doing something right…LOL:D…Thanks Again Rory…:):+1:
Glenn

Glenn, it’s my pleasure! I just love seeing people using ZBrush the way it was originally intended. I’m a big fan of the way you can use the software as a Photoshop replacement, as a Maya replacement and as an exotic hybrid of the two! I think most of the doodles I’ve put up here over the years have been 2D illos, just because the concept-to-completion rate can’t be beaten, though I do enjoy it when I occasionally rope myself in for a 3D challenge, like the Halloween one last year.

I think I assumed you’d been over-painting sculpted meshes in PShop or PaintStop just because of the painterly feel you’d achieved, but now I look closer, I can see it was entirely possible for you to have achieved the effect in standard 2.5D ZBrush space. I do very little art with that work flow, as I’m an inveterate layers keeper and bridges non-burner: I like to keep all my editing options there till the end

However you’ve done it, it looks like your research has started to pay off!

All the best,

Rory

A very soft and subtle composition…I feel very calm after looking at it …thankyou

Thank You Deke.:)…Doing this kind of theme and composition relaxes me …Kind of like those ancient Chinese silk paintings of nature…There are a bunch of them here in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston where I live…Everytime I see them, they take me to a better place where I would like to be…:)…Glad to hear that this piece had the same effect on you, as those Chinese pieces have on me…Nice feeling in creating a nice feeling…

Some more work done on this piece this morning…Placing the rocks in the waterfall, and some uprooted trees in the forground that have been swept away by the water in some previous rain storm…Need to put the water traveling around and over the rocks next…and texture the trees so they look like they have been there for awhile…same thing with the rocks…moss and plants growing on them ect.

Amazing!!!I have a question, did you do the bear and make it its own document for a background befor you added the other items to the scene? I have been sitting on my tree woman for a week or so thinking of what to add but thinking i might try doing something like that working it as a background. keep the pictures coming they are amazing…

Hi Promethias / Brian and Thanks Man

About your question…I first get the ztl tool figure in the pose and position in the composition on a document canvas where I want it to be and then add other ztl tools that i’ve made around that main figure.
Every time you go out of edit mode, you are then basically working on a 2D canvas.
Get the ztl tools that you want to place into your canvas in place first in your tool pallette…drag one onto your canvas, press edit…spin it around ,…pose it…Then go out of edit mode,…and drag another ZTL tool onto the canvas, and do the same thing…building up your scene as you go along.
A neat trick also, …if you want the active 3Dztl tool to receed or come forward in space on the canvas…say to go in front or in back of another element in your composition…Just drag your active 3Dztl tool onto the canvas…place it where you want it in the composition…size it accordingly…Then go out of edit mode…press the MOVE at the top of your screen…A gyro will appear…Drag your cursor/pen on the outside of that gyro on a blank area of your canvas,…and your ZTL tool will receed or come forward depending on which direction that you drag your cursor/pen…You can also use that gyro to scale and rotate your ZTL tool…When you get your ZTL tool into the position that you want it in within the composition…Press DRAW at the top of your sceen and the gyro will go away…Then Save As whatever version you want it to be…version #2 or whatever…In the Document section…because you are working on a 2D/2.5 canvas,…while using 3D ZTL tools that you have created to make a Composition…I hope what I wrote makes sense…And is maybe a little useful to you…I f you have any questions, just shout out, and i’ll try to answer them to the best of my limited ability regarding this program…

Anyway, I threw together a quick little scene this morning for you using the method that I just described above…Took maybe 20 MIN. tops to compose…Used the guy that comes with ZBRUSH, and a Dragon ztl tool that I sculpted awhile back…a Grizzly Bear that i’m working on now, both started in Sculptris and then brought further using other features in ZBRUSH… and a rock that I made in DynaMesh which has a couple of fibermesh plants and a branch sticking out of it…which are subtools and can be used seperately in the composition usung the method decribed above…just shut the other windows/eyes in the subtool pallette to the other subtools, and drag whichever element onto the canvas, and compose with it…Thats how I did that whole scene with the Grizzly bear and waterfall…I just overlapped the one branch to make trees, and the one rock to create a whole landscape scene…using the method described above…
Anyway…Brian…Really appreciate the visit, kind words and thoughts…and look forward to seeing what you come up with in your skechbook next…:+1:small_orange_diamond:)

ZBrush ScreenGrab01 copy.jpgMAN DRAGON BEAR 3.jpg

THAT is seriously funny!
I cannot believe how much that improves that guy and makes him some how nicer just because he seems now to be nice to animals. Before this he looked like he ate his own offspring.
Seeing how you set these images up is very interesting, I never (mostly, at least until recently after Sebastian’s tutorial) used those “gyro” thingys.

Very cool!
Thank you!

Cheers!
Mealea

Hi Glenn, Is he the ticket taker at the Ark? Nice one. Cheers, David

“Who’s a big, fluffy, nummy bear? YOU are! You’re my big fluffy, nummy bear! Yes you are!”

*sigh…

At least give some respect to the original modeler and give him credit in your post if you are going to use other people’s model in your compositing …

Mealea…LOL…You can never judge a book by it’sa cover.

David…he would make a good ticket taker…LOL…

VoodooDad…

Thanks guys…Was just a quick sketch done to explain to Brian what he was asking about in his question to me.

Piggy…Do yourself a favor,…read before you speak…

Thanks for the explanation, it got me to thinking along a different line Deke

FEB. 24, 2012

Thank You Deke…Glad to hear that it sparked something…:)…It’s just basically the same method that Meats Meier teaches in the ILLUSTRATION section of his Great DVD…Introduction to ZBRUSH 3…One of the best DVD’S that I ever invested in…He is a Great Teacher, and Illustrator, amongst many other things having to do with ZBRUSH and Digital Art…
Thanks for the visit, and reposting that, and also for letting me know what you think about what I wrote Deke…Lets me know that it…Wasn’t a bunch of wasted words, thoughts, and time…Much Appreciated my friend…:+1:small_orange_diamond:)
