New Work.

#4 in a series of new work. 2.5D painting with repeats of different tools laid down in different ways utilizing different materials. Often I warp shapes with snakehook brush. Lately I have been converting the resulting color image into monochrome and then painting back the original colors selectively at different degrees of opacity.

I like it, but I find the amount of negative space in the overall layout to be a bit jarring. With such an interpretative piece I think this would either benefit from going either all or nothing. Cropped all up inside with very little negative space letting the positive space and forms draw the eye in different directions or pull the camera way back to invoke a greater sense of size from the viewer’s point of view.

Eh…it’s all interpretive so take it or leave it.

@beta_channel:

Good advice! Actually most of my other pieces fill the frame more than this last one … i was caught up in my excitement for this new direction I have been taking!

Cheers, David

It’s great to see someone else veering into the Abstract realm (Great Stuff )…:+1:

Hi Blue,

Thank you so much for having a look … glad you enjoyed the work! I have really been enjoying myself since I overcame my reluctance to post my images here. I don’t yet have the chops to do a good representational sculpt but there are so many amazing artists here that are doing that already so what the heck … I will just do my thing!

I really love your Dragon on black … will have more time this weekend to do your thread justice.

All the best, David

#4 in a new series of work.

Looks like somebody riding a motorcycle very, very fast.

Excellent observation! Cyber “hog” Probably a bit bumpy with those wheels! Thanks for stopping by. Cheers, David

More new 2.5D in the same direction I have recently been moving.

More of the same … 2.5D painting!

Once again in the same style 2.5D painting. Hope you enjoy this new direction!

i enjoy watching your exploration, and that there is a development from one piece to the next. i have not yet tried out 2.5d much yet, but you do wonders with it… i like the last one a lot, since it has a solidity which makes a good earth bound feeling… the third above , the “hairy” one, looks intersting from the aspect of how you did it, but is to me too confusing to the eye for me. the post before that(#4 in the series you called it), is one of my favourites, it leaves alot of room for imagination, there are stong shapes to suggest, and the colorscheme is great. and i love the composition of that… i know, i will look forward to what you create, its a joy to follow.

@kokoro:

Thank you so much for your kind words, I am glad that you have been following my “journey” with Zbrush. I am flattered, as I really admire your sculpting skills … your work is very beautiful and moving. One day I hope to have more of a handle on sculpting as well. Cheers, David

I just checked out your blog … quite a varied background! I enjoyed your real sculpts and drawings as well … and the math … way over my head.

2.5D again … I am ofter re-purposing earlier work/tools but not always.

Hi David

Looking Great…:+1:…The last one posted…My favorite so far…Just great to look at…No more complicated than that…:D:)
Glenn

That last one is awesome, it is now my desktop wallpaper.

I think you may be the king of 2.5 D Zbrush, your own niche!

:+1:

5 stars.

Hi Eric, I am really flattered, thanks so much. King of 2.5 D … that has a nice ring to it! I am not an accomplished sculptor so I find the 2.5 D path one I can embrace at the moment, and have fun!

I was looking at some of your awesome concept sketches … it would be great to see some of them in 3D!

All the best,
David

This last one is great!
Some PP could help a lot. Like burning (gradient) some areas for instance. 2.5 d best render tents to look a bit flat. You’re a great photographer as well, you possibly know what I mean.
:+1:

Hi Michalis,

Thanks so much, glad you like the last piece! There is an enormous amount of post production in most of my work. I kind of like that they are more like illustration perhaps line work more than traditional 3D at this juncture of my work. See what you think of this new piece.

Cheers my friend,
David
