Creepy but great sculpt! :+1:

Thanks Acebrush. have a nice sunday

Is this for the comicon challenge julian?
Why not? Just a thought. I could write a script but you’re even better on this.
Realism isn’t easily acceptable lately.
BTW have you tried negative values on sss mixer?

Very cool sculpting and mats Julian :D:+1: - crazy sub though

no, it’s not at all for comicon. he’s part of a personal project.

negative sss - yes. why?

Thanks a lot FoOD.
oh come on
it’s not that crazy - now is it?

A negative sss value (change the angle of light a bit) combined as screen layer, levels

BTW its not that crazy, you are.

Hey man! I always appreciate your work since the first time I saw it on zbc. And this one is no exception.

If you don’t mind, I was researching subsurface scattering myself (in real life for some time now) and as achieved through the usage of Zbrush renderer as of lately as I found some free time and it really drew me in. I’ve found that the Zbrush sss isn’t really realistic, cause sss hardly ever happens on the top of the head or on the arms and legs. And it seems to me that the bpr sss doesn’t really have an option to localize itself to only the ear, firsts and nose in one single pass.

What were your findings?

hi cherub - well, that’s not entirely true. what you are referring to is the back scattering part of the sss, which of course only happens with the thinner more translucent parts of a body, like ears etc
and the of course also only if there is a light in the back. if you look at your fingers with a strong light right behind them, you can clearly observe the effect. the back scattering is only one part of the whole scattering which occurs all over the skin of your body. in a nutshell - since skin layers in general are not completely opaque. light penetrates the skin and bounces around between the layers, which makes makes skin always look softer all around.
now as for the red deep back scatter which you want to limit to ears, nose tips eyelids etc
in a renderer like Vray or Mental Ray you can fine control that with maps. the overall control is anyway determined by the varying thickness of your mesh. as far as I gather Zbrush also does take the thickness levels into account, but you don’t have the more precise and direct control of maps. that leaves you with simply rendering various separate sss passes to comp and blend in photoshop, which is what I usually do.

Nice last one julian!
About SSS

What I have in mind is to use front sss, use only backface sss with different lighting, use negative values of sss with slightly different angle of lighting but see this dragon how it looks as epidermal, subdermal or backface sss. Try to have similar render passes and combine them in Ps. Screen is the preferable mode for blending, Ps works differently than other build in blends. To play with levels is the trick.
To hide sss is more difficult.
Zbrush SSS is fine. Just some more love is needed. Zbrush is definitely a female app.

Creepy, but well done! :+1:

Surreal and brilliant for it

@Tincow - Thanks, very appreciated .
@Webhead - Thank you, but why is there a ‘but’ ?

Seriously though, I see that often around the forum - people saying ‘creepy BUT
’ or ‘scary -but
’ . If a subject is creepy and the artist is successfully conveying that creepiness, then shouldn’t it rather simply be ’ well done creepy’ ?

It is very well done. The fact that it creeps me out shows you succeeded in your objective. Judging from your thread, I would say creepy subjects are obviously your thing, and you are good at it. I’m not usually into creepy stuff at all. My “but” was to say I liked your work in spite of the fact I don’t normally go for creepy things.

Love the concept & mood. Suberb sculpt and polypaint (great feeling of weight and tension in volumes pressing against each other) :+1: .
