Those clay renders that show all the details just rock!!
I’d say outstanding!
Also the expression on the face is so expressive … feels alive :+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:.
(Kinda reminds me of Margaret Thatcher .)

Could you possibly give your set up on the last two renders Julian, the one that looks like clay. Very disturbing metaphorical sculpt BTW, I dig it :+1: .

lovely sculpts sir!

Very creepy, love the untextured shots too - great detailing pores 'n wrinkles :+1:

muchos gracias gentleman

Muddpitt - there isn’t much about it. it’s not a matcap, but a trishader material with an sss slot.
they soft clay effect comes from rendering with sss and simply turning it to B&W then. you can also change the colors in the ss shader to grey and white tones and save that material then,to have a permanent always ready b&w sss material with this kind of look.

apart from turning the render to B&W I used duplicated AO and shadow maps from Zbrush in a mix of overlay and multiply mode.
so - one AO in multiply and on top of that one as overlay. before that I tweaked the contrast the AO map by adjusting the levels, in order to bring out the details and give it a sharper more defined look.

so basically all that is used is a pretty much standard trishader material, with one shade for overall shading and specular, one for sss and the third for s smaller more focused second specular only.
then render and let ZBrush render and create the shadow and AO map and put it together in ps.
you could make a matcap with a similar look, but that comes with the disadvantage of the fixed matcap light. I personally rarely use matcaps because I want the freedom to light my scene on the fly.

let mw know if that helped. if you don’t get any decent results on your own I’ll post the shader, lights and exact settings if needed.

she looks great. well hideous… but GREAT!

Julian, I really appreciate the explanation but its kinda lost on me as I’m an uber noob to rendering  . If you have the time to post the shader lights and settings that would be great, if not thats cool to.

I’ve been trying to learn the whole BPR thing using your thread and setting primarily. Basically just playing around with it trying to see what I can come up with.

I just stumbled over a sheet with settings here that might also be useful. the shader is pretty similar to mine.

I’ll post my file later.

how’s it going?

@Muddpitt here’s the stuff you ordered

Thank you julian!
