New Sci Fi/ Fantasy Illustrations

Hello all,

I think it’s time I ‘lifted the bonnet’ so we could all take a look at how some my images are constructed - hope you all find them interesting!

Here’s a progress image of the David Tennant/ Doctor Who sculpt from very basic primitives to the final piece:

Any questions, fire away!

Oh, and Jake - we’ll definitely have to meet up semi-regular if we can, so keep in touch!DT_Progress.jpg

you deserve a top row for the magneto!!!

Hello,

In response to the recent emails I’ve had about the face image, I thought I’d break things down so you could see how it all came together, there’s no great mystery - just simple render passes and the tweaking of layer levels in Photoshop:

The basic head ZTL:

Here she is fully textured:

Here are the passes used to get the basic render:

and how I put all together:

Right, that’s all for now, any questions, just ask!

Cheers,

All is revealed, excellent response, thankyou very much.

really nice stuff you have here.

Hello all,

As a diversion from the 3D images I’ve been posting up - here’s a more 2D piece I did recently, based on Andrew Jones ZBrush thumbnail technique. I wanted to try something a little less abstract - took about an hour from start to finish.

Here’s the ZBrush sketch using the deco brush and simple alphas of jet engine parts:

And here’s the final piece worked up in Photoshop - The “SS Indomitable”:

Great fun and an example of how I like to experiment with ZBrush for more than 3D detailing!

Any questions, keep them coming!

Thank you so much for these 2 " Under the Hood" posts. I think the face sketch came out really great (was that really a quick sketch?). Keep up the great work :+1: !

Thank you for sharing :+1: :+1:

wow last sketch is high quality. Definitely my favourite.

I believe the black woman head curves were adjusted in a way her skin shines too much. Looking at step number 4, looks like you applied white powder on her skin at step number 5.

I’m loving your illustrations, looking forward to more!!

Hey Neil. Great to see some of your new work. I still remember you showing me those bookcovers back at Eurocom.

Nice post :+1:
