New Sci Fi/ Fantasy Illustrations

Hello All,

My name is Neil Roberts and I’m a freelance illustrator/ artist and a long time pro user of ZBrush. I’d thought I’d share my artworks and processes with you in this thread.

Some of you might have seen my work on Black Library Publishings ‘Horus Heresy’ series - made using 3DSMax, Zbrush and Photoshop:

and:

Here are some personal pieces from my portfolio:

I’m currently working on more covers for BL Publishing as well as new works for Catalyst Game Labs on ‘Classic Battletech’ and with Privateer Press, using ZBrush on illustrations and a new range of miniature Warjacks - all of which I think you good people might be interested in.

Unfortunately, I’m tied to NDA’s on those, but as soon as I can post anything, I will - that’s a promise!

Oh, and as there is an action hero competition and I’m not entering (no time!) - here are some old images of Superheroes/ Supervillains I’ve dusted down for you:

There you go, I’ll be updating this thread as and when I can, so keep those eyes peeled!

On a purely business level - if anyone is looking for freelance work of this standard, feel free to contact me at:

[email protected]

Any questions, fire away!

Really amazing stuff, same here really love the Dr. Who piece especially!

Cool works!

Wow top notch stuff man, incredible work.

Hey Neil, thanks for sharing, really love those Warhammer images, you captured so much action. Eating Las Vegas is great too, and Magneto is cool, as mentioned nice shaders, I like the way they contrast the reality in the face.

Looking foward to seeing more of this post from you.

Those Superheroes/ Supervillains are superb, what did you use to render them with?

beautiful work Neil

Hello All,

Thanks for the kind words, they’re much appreciated.

A quick note on the shaders and renderer. Magneto’s fabric was a simple falloff texture in the diffuse slot (to give it a slightly velvety sheen) whereas the shiny areas had a high reflective and colour value - nothing overly complicated. Plus there was a little bit of Photoshopping to tweak skin tones, add EFX and unify the image as a whole.

Also, those renders were done in V-Ray - set to medium, with two area lights and a simple backdrop to simulate a photographers studio. Again,I kept it as simple as possible.

Hope that’s of help!

Unfortunately, I don’t have the .ZTLs for the Superhero images - they were done at an old workplace and I didn’t get a chance to back them up when I left.

As for Doctor Who - time permitting, I’d love to do more Who based pieces, the other Doctors, the Master, Ice Warriors, Scaroth etc - it’d be great to get them 3D printed - maybe even as commemorative busts for other Whovians!

Too many words in this post - here’s a picture to liven things up:

‘Asteroids’ is loosely based on the old Atari arcade game - Zbrush used for the asteroids and for texturing the spacecraft.

Cheers,

N

Beautiful worx. Looking forward to seeing more!

would definitely be great to see more who stuff - I was thinking of doing something myself  [go 8 ;)]… looking forward to see another one from you - the Master sounds cool

Great stuff, Neil! I really like that David Tennant in particular. Super Cool!

Looking forward to seeing more from you.

Cheers, Nick.

Here’s a quick ZBrush sketch, DOF in Photoshop:

With hindsight, maybe the skin could be a bit more shiny and it’d be nice if she were looking into camera. However, I’m quite pleased with it, as it only took an hour or so as a quick test to push rendering passes in ZBrush.
