My works in progress (Sculpting Adventures)

Hello mdale13!

I like the way you changed the pose, this works much better. I have a few pointer, hope you don’t mind. I don’t know how you began the tunic but to me it looks stiff and ticking out from the body instead of hanging draped down from his shoulders. Usually the place that has most space between fabric and body would be around the waist, where fabric normally bunch up and foldout over a belt. I would extract a mesh and sculpt the gravity downwards beginning with the shoulders. As for the sword, which looks good, I feel it doesn’t fit the character, maybe a gladiolus type sword. The shield is also looking good but I’m not sure what function the nob in the middle would have. If it is meant to be a viking type shield that ornament would be a boss and its main function would be for the handle and hand, if so it would be a separate entity! I hope my crit was useful!

Keep up the good work!

crazyhorse = thanks for the tips! i have been working on him some more, keeping you input in mind. i dont think i am going to change the sheild or sword, as this is more of a practice, but next character i do i will certainly think more about the context of my weapon choice. and the tunic folds are being addressed as i type!

here is a 2 hours female bust study. i got inspired by Ryans great gnomon tutorials and decided to do a quick sculpt before bed. i still have the hair to do for the morning. i need help making her look more female. obviously the addition of hair will help, but what else? any input is greatly appreciated! thanks as always!

Hey Mat, you have some nice work going on here. I saw this in your AIM profile and I thought I’d help you out a little bit. It’s a good start but it still has a pretty masculine look to it. I’ll just mention a few things I feel would make this have a more feminine look. All together the structures of the female face are much softer than males.

Eyes: The eye socket I could feel could be more soft and rounded , especially from the side angle. Also, Female brow line is much less pronounced than the male browline and rests much higher on the face.

Cheeks: Females tend to have fuller and rounded cheek bones which also makes the cheekbone appear higher and further foward.

Nose: The nose has a good small thin look to it but the nostrils look a bit too large and chiseled. Also the distance between the nose, mouth and chin seems very large

Jaw: The jawline of females are much more rounded and have a much more gradual approach to the ear while men’s jaws have a very sudden change of direction up to the ear.

As for the rest of the body the sternomastoid looks pretty disproportionate compared to the other muscles in the torso and the angle the head is in comparison to the shoulders in chest has a look of hunching over a bit too much.

All and all keep up the good work!

-Dan K

Next step, try to make expressions in those faces. Take a mirror and look what the skin is doing around your eyes, when you open your mouth. Just a hint, we are all starting.

thanks for the input!
yeah i will do some expression stuff, i just wanted to be sure i got the proportions and details down as best as i can first. thanks again!

Hey Matt,

I think Dan had some good points. The model is looking better. I showed a woman (my wife) the model and asked her what she thought. She said the the jaw, chin and brow are generally to squared. The space between the nose and lips is a little large. The shoulders are a bit broad.

With the hair she looks more feminine.

I think your progressing and your skills are increasing quickly. I have had many conversations with digital sculptors regarding what makes a female head look female. It’s a hard thing for a guy to grasp without referring to anatomical references like a real woman to study (draw). It is so difficult for a guy that in the film A Scanner Darkly the artist tasked with animating Winona Ryder could only be a woman.

I struggle with this myself and pledge to study in more depth what makes a woman look like a woman. This is culturally and ethnically subjective. Very hard to pin down. There are always exceptions.

As Ron Maggio says, “Bravo”! :+1:

thanks elliott.

i will be returning to these scuplts soon, but being a college student during finals doesnt lend itself well to finding time to do independent work. updates next week though

Bravo, lol, Yay Springfield College inside jokes! Anyways Matt…

The key I’ve found to making a female head is subtlety. Basically for this head I made quickly I more or less made a manish head then I smoothed it until it looked more feminine, then I moved some stuff around to add to the femininimity. Your head has very chisilled features so she looks like a WWF steroid man lady rather than a female head.

Here’s one a i did quickly (my first female head actually), not perfect but looks more or less feminine

psi0nic_gh0st,
An eye patch would make her perfect.

ur a funny guy

hi Mdale13 been a while since i checked this thread.
some nice work, im glad to see your still improveing

a few tips with the female sculpt, try to accentuate the cheek bones and chin so they are too big then smooth the whole face this should help you keep the basic form whilst still achiveing a soft feel.

good luck with you exams:)

hey guys.

sorry for the long delay. moving back home/seeing friends/finding a job all that has been been keeping me much too busy to do anything substancial. tonight i got to whack away at the female head somemore, let me know what you think. i still needs some work, but i think this is the most lady-like version so far. thanks for looking!

Hey Mat, looks a little better but I still see a couple problem areas. The top lip looks like it needs to come all the way to the corner of the mouth and needs to be a little more full. Nose looks good keep it that way. The cheeks need to be fuller in the outside corner underneath the eye. Ear looks like it needs some work with the anatomy, this image should help a little

Finally with the eyes the lids seem to have some strange divots in some areas. I do have to say though that your female head looks much better than any attempt I’ve had at making one. Good work :+1:
