Mestophales - Sketchbook

Decided to start a thread to document my progress. So I had my friend Jesse Sandifer http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=61956&highlight=sandpiper who is now doing ZBrush Tutorials customized for whatever you want covered - just an awesome concept. So I had him do one for me on Hard Surface Techniques since I had never attempted it and so here is my first attempt at it. Took me about 2 hours but hey not bad for a start IMHO. Just needs some eyeballs and its good to go.

Man you’re game posting here I did it once never again. It’s a tough process to learn but this is a great start something I’ve got to get into. So keep it going and all the best.
Midnight

really neat concept… I realize this is just a study of hard surface but incase you decide to take it further…!

I think the eyes could just be bright lights.

all the circles seems to be a bit excessive from a design perspective however I think if you gave them a purpose it would be really cool! Have him recharging with wires and cables all plugging into those slots… would really be interesting.

Thank you all for your feedback I will be putting some of those into place soon, maybe do some polypainting to show the organic vs armor, cybernetics

Here is tonights play - what do you think?

practice makes perfect that is what I have been told countless times. Hard surfaces are hard to do, I know I have a hard time doing them. Keep working at it. And question I have would be is there someplace we can get these tutorials? I would love a good hard surface technique, even something for lips also.

He looks like the creatures from the 5th element I think the tail is great give him more character.:+1:

@Adio38 - send Jesse a private email http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showth…light=sandpiper
Tell him specifically what you want covered and he will customize a video tutorial just for you. He is an awesome instructor.

Here is another playground on a human mesh

C&C Welcome

thanks, I just sent him a message. keep up the work.

Hey Chris - looking good!

Some thoughts:

  1. Focus on that silhouette even more so that these hard surface elements you are adding really make in impact in your design.

  2. Sometimes it’s nice to design the hard surface stuff to be based on the actual anatomy of the subject. That’s a subjective thing though.

  3. Once you nail down a design you like, go in there and really tighten up the intersections so it looks more refined. The Polish brush is actually really nice for stuff like that and I like to enhance the “lines” of the design with the Dam Standard brush w/ a small brush-size (so the falloff of the alpha isn’t that noticeable and you’re getting good cuts).

There’s so many dang hard surface brushes now, you’ll just need to play around with them to get a feel for which ones work for you. I like the “Finish” brushes (Clay, Flatten, etc) and they seem to do a good job too. Hard surface work takes patience but it’s definitely achievable to get really nice stuff. Keep up the good work!! Take em to the next level…

@SandPiper - Hey Jesse - Thanks for the feedback

Here is something that is really fun and I think this is one I will take to the next level what do you guys think?

keep it coming! Great to see the good effort.

oh and try using a different matcap. The red wax material makes it difficult to read the crevices correctly. I like the MatcapGray_nickz one personally.

I am still waiting on the R3 since I have not gotten an email but looking forward to the finish brushes

I will play with a different MatCap tonight

Thanks Guys you are all so Great!!!

As always C&C welcome

Just got R3 today and only had time to play with some of the finishing brushes - C&C Welcome

hey now you’re starting to get somewhere man I might even have a go at this :+1:

exactly what I was gonna say - now you’re getting somewhere. Keep refining! And add some deeper recesses in certain appropriate areas. That’ll give the surface more depth.

I just wish there was a straight line pinch brush…lol
