Mac & Zbrush 3 Thread

i am a license holder for uvlayout, and an intel mac user. i may or may not ever use uvlayout again. Blender has superb UV unwrapping. i might argue that UVs are blender’s strongest point, along with all of the awesome physics simulation (hair, cloth, fluid, etc.). with the latest release candidate, 2.46, the UV editor optionally displays color-coded UV stretching just like uvlayout, and you only press unwrap once and its instananeous, near perfect UVs.

wow.
guess I know what I’m doing tonight.

hop on it!

in my opinion and honesty, blender has a much steeper learning curve than Zbrush, but about equal to uvlayout since they both rely heavily on keyboard shortcuts. but once you’ve learned what you need to do in Blender, it’s well worth it.

Don’t you think that since it’s been such a long time that Pixologic should be offering a beta tester seat to everyone that paid for Z3 Mac already, or would that make too much sense? I mean I didn’t pay for it yet just because I had a feeling this would happen, but I have been following these Mac threads pretty well so this is just my input.

here’s a video tutorial for unwrapping in blender…

I think we’d all just like the GM.

I wonder what the 512 x 512 icon will look like…

Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll find out by next year.

Is it really still an icon at 512?
That’s got to be enough room to write the
entire program description.

next year huh… man, well I certainly hope
we’re not in the same situation on v4.

tapping fingers

Maybe by the time we get Zbrush, it will be version 4.0.

I think someone was speculating that same thing in the
last thread we had, before it got bethreaded.

THey need to get a mac demo or i"ll go insane!!! I emailed them about it and they said they’d have one soon.

According to the most recent information I have, we are hoping to have it ready before the end of March, however, it may be pushed back to April if more development is required. I suggest you keep an eye on our website, as it will certainly be announced as soon as we have a concrete release date.

Wow, the doomed Mac thread lives on. I remember reading the old thread back when “Think late March” was the motto of choice.
I’m really needing Zbrush 3 right now. There are projects that I’d love to start on, but I haven’t touched Zbrush 2 in a month and I’d hate to get use to the old set up if the new one is right around the corner. (sigh)
I am kinda hoping that when the release comes, we get something extra special. It would suck to find out that we’re finally getting Zbrush 3 and all the PC users are getting 3.5 or 4… and the waiting game restarts…

I’m hoping, and from what Aurick posted in the last thread,
that any offset in future releases would be nominal.

That being said, here we are almost mid-may.
I remember when they said e.o.February -
someone responded ‘So probably June…’
I remember thinking they were off their rocker,
but am shaking my head now.

fingers crossed hope it’s soon!

For those that can’t wait: ZBrush 3.1 works really, really well in bootcamp/XP. Its a fully compatible option relieving the stress out of waiting for a Mac version. In these days, unless you’re on the G5 platform, there’s really no need to be platform dependent. On the contrary it’s a blessing in the long run to adopt to both platform. Switching back and forth is not that much of a hassle and many times you can run the same setup of software on both platforms. Of course, using OS X so much sweeter than klonking around in XP, but most of the time it’s only the software itself that matters.

Cheers

bootcamp could be a really good solution to some of us. but I don’t really want to do that. I spent student loans to buy my mac and I can’t really buy windows to run one program. and I don’t want to use up the hard drive space to install a whole other operating system. besides in a while I won’t be able to buy XP anymore. I would rather stick to one OS per computer myself.

^^^^
Agreed. I’d rather not spend money on a separate OS if I only intend to use it for one program. PLUS I’m just running on a MBP that’s feeling a little stretched already. Anyway, who puts Windows on a Mac? That’s like putting Howard Stern’s head on Angelina Jolie’s body.

I do, and it enables me to run any software that I need to use on my MBP. Some applications run even faster on Windows/MBP than they do on OS X/MBP and ZBrush 3.1 is running just fine. In any case, I think I’d rather get the job done than excuse myself to my clients that I don’t like Windows…
But of course, if ZBrush 3.1 is the only app you need to run then I agree, it could be a stretch to install Windows just for that purpose.

I just did a keyword search for threads containing “Macintosh”. I was shocked at just how many of them were locked, due to the fiasco that is ZB3 Macintosh.

Pixologic, you have a great product and an avid user base. As someone who mentors software development companies and teams for a living, I have one simple suggestion for you: once you complete this latest, ZBrush for Macintosh fire drill, take some time to learn some PR skills. Pissing off users will only get you so far.

and on the other side of the fence…

I’m tech. director for my department,
and am not going to migrate my team
to a virtualized worflow for a one-legged
zB with no zapplink.

I understand the differences in a solo

shortcomings quantify significantly
in the context of a department.
