your phone number of course…
At least that’s what I put!
So does EVERYone out there but me have an Intel Mac? You all seem awfully excited about ZB3 for mac Intel. After all this waiting and anticipation, I’m just sitting here feeling ill. I recently bought a slightly newer computer which was a nice upgrade for me, but it doesn’t have an Intel processor. If I had known that ZBrush 3 for Mac was only going to be for Intel models, I would have spent the extra bucks to get one. Now I guess I’m screwed. Oh well. It was nice knowing you, ZBrush.
Hi Gammillart, Pixo dropping the PPC was announced months ago, it was on this forum! I’m really sorry to hear about you getting an upgrade you cant use with ZB3, and our treatment as a community has been far from fair, but in defence of pixo they did announce. Sorry again
Since Apple no longer sell any PPC macs, why should the developers spend time developing for that platform. This is only natural - even though its a tough one to swallow if you have a PPC based Mac.
I can understand that you must be dissapointed if you have preordered ZB3.
I hope that you guys with a PPC mac, can afford to get an Intel based mac soon.
I would like to stress yet again that PPC users are not being dropped cold turkey. Pixologic will continue to support ZBrush 2 for you until such time as you do eventually upgrade to an Intel-based machine. At that point, we’ll upgrade your copy of ZBrush to whatever the most current version is for which a free upgrade has been released.
Nor is your situation different from what PC users experienced when Z2 was released. Z2 has higher system requirements than 1.55b did. There were a number of PC users who couldn’t run it until they upgraded their PC’s or bought new ones. We continued to support them, the same way that we’ll continue to support PPC users. There were a few people who didn’t upgrade for a year or more, and I can think of one who wound up skipping Z2 entirely.
And it’s not like ZBrush 2 is chump change. For example, ILM used Z2 on Davey Jones and his crew in the last two “Pirates” movies because they hadn’t yet integrated Z3 into their pipeline. Z2 is a VERY capable package.
I can Hardly wait, I hav’nt been this excited about software in quite awhile. I hope I’m first inline to get my download link!
To be fair, the two situations are NOT comparable. The PC people were forced to use a fairly recent version of ZBrush, and if they chose to try, they could still do so, even if the performance might be painful. This poor guy can’t run ZB3 even if he was okay with slower performance.
At some point, this is where poor communications must come home to roost. There were people in the dark, who might have made different purchasing decisions if Pix had given them proper heads up. For whatever reason, Pixologic chose not to do that. A lot of people feel Pix could have done better and should have done better. Only you know exactly why the strategy was crafted as it was. That’s not important. You made your decision, and some people were necessarily hurt by it. Perhaps you still feel that was the right strategy.
But the people at Pix should at least be man enough to admit that the Mac users are definitely NOT in the same boat as the PC users were. There’s the matter of the time difference, for one thing. Please don’t sneeze at something that was a pretty major pain for a lot of people.
Admit that much, at least. And empathize with the poor guy, for God’s sake.
Just wondering if you still have to fill out the form if you’ve upgraded to the ZB3 temp PC licence???
Yes you do, Aurick advised me to do that and has repeated the advice in other threads.

Holy, frig… huh? … wha…?! How did the… ?!
Aurick;
STOP EXPLODING MY MIND!!!
oh, no… senses overload…
Yup, you can see a little doc on ILM using ZBrush at http://www.ilm.com/theshow/. Go to ‘Brag Swag’, then click ‘Podcasts’, and you can see a screenshot of ZB2 and Davy Jones. Click on download below the image. Too bad it’s such a low resolution video, but it’s really neat none the less.
Thank you kind sir, couldnt be bothered trawling through the fluff on here to find the answer, many thanks Baz…
Okay. I went browsing today at the Apple store to see what a Mac with Intel would set me back. If I sell the computer I just got then I might be able to justify the cost. After discussing it with the sales guy there he suggested I go with an iMac with 4 gigs of ram which would save me close to a thousand dollars over a Mac Pro but should be able to handle any work I am likely to have. Before I make a decision, does anyone here have any thoughts or info on running ZB3 on an iMac?
Good to see you aren’t ditching it Gammillart. On Leopard, ZBrush 3.12 will be able to use 4 gigs. If you only have 4 gigs, ZBrush can’t use it all, you have to leave some for the OS and background apps. So that’s one little detail to take note of.
Also, something tells me that the Snow Leopard and ZBrush 3.5 combo in December will be able to address even more RAM. I have no supporting evidence at all, but it just seems like it would make sense. RAM is what ZBrush craves for high polycounts, I don’t see why they would continue to limit it’s use with so many out there sitting on 8, 16, even 32 gig systems. Especially in professional studios. So just remember that the iMac isn’t upgradable. I can’t imagine how smooth ZBrush would be if it could address 8 gigs or more, but I wouldn’t want to miss out on it if it happens! While Pixologic won’t say anything, it might be something to do some kind of research on first.
That said, ZBrush will still run like a dream on a 4 gig iMac. These are just things to consider.
Think at the situation where you are now !
Do not do it again !
Go to the best configuration you can afford. Ram is very important. So go with the MacPro even the lowest one but start with te RAM you can afford now and later you will buy more as much as you will need.
ZBrush needs and will need a lot of RAM. Never forget that
Do not buy it with Apple : too expensive.
My 2 cents !
Michel
i use both computers, i have an iMac at work and a mac pro at home. if you get the iMac, if you don’t already know, don’t buy your 4 gigs of ram from apple, they will take you for hundreds more than what it is worth. i got a 4 gig kit for $90 from datamemorysystems.com. but if you do get the iMac it is a great computer and will handle a lot of what you throw at it.
that being said, if you can afford to get a mac pro, go for it. more ram, more storage and more processors are always needed. not sure what other apps you use, but an app like “after effects” will use all 8 processors on a dual quad core. i have 16 gigs of ram in mine so when rendering in after effects it dedicates 2 gigs of ram to each processor (or something close to that) which makes things happen very quickly. (not sure if zBrush does this, but i am sure zbrush loves ram )
the only thing weird me and my coworker have noticed that is bad, is when using Maya on our iMacs with the ATI Radeon cards we get some occasional “glitches” and graphic problems here and there. where as the Nvidia G force cards in the mac pro and macbook pro do not give these problems. not sure if that is just on Maya, or if other 3D apps also have problems with the ATI cards. i am sure others here could answer that.
If you can find a Mac Pro, go for it. It is worth “future-proofing” with regards to RAM. Even a previous generation Mac Pro ought to be oodles; even though the 2006/2007 Mac Pros indicated they could hold a maximum of 16GB, I seem to recall you can put 4GB sticks in to get 32GB; RAM is really cheap, like fidget said above. And if you’re not afraid to get your hands a little dirty, you can even replace the Dual-Core Xeons with Quad-Cores (Anandtech did this with preproduction versions) sometime after your Applecare is gone, or you don’t care about the warranty.
Go find a refurbished or relatively new Mac Pro from eBay or Craigslist. You’ll be happier in the long run.
You’re welcome!
Thanks for the advice, guys. I decided to bite the bullet and I bought a Mac Pro yesterday. The timing seemed right since I was just about to transfer a lot of software and files to the G5 I bought for work recently. I can just transfer them to the Mac Pro instead and put the G5 on Craig’s list. Now for the hard part. I have to tell my wife about that huge charge on my credit card. If you don’t hear from me for a while, call the police.
When Z3 comes out, does anyone know how to go about transferring the registration from one computer to another? Thanks.
No worries mate. You’ll have a new serial and the registration system is no more depending on the computer or HD you have.
