Jester

Hi ho… Kids bored and getting on your nerves? You need to get them one of these Jesters. Highly entertaining and skilled, they guarantee hours of supervised glee. And if kids misbehave, the mask comes off. Works out well.

So after working on this guy (‘Jester’) for awhile I’ve lost the ability to tweak it anymore. I think I need a break. Heh. He’s based on a sketch I did awhile ago that I always wanted to make 3D.

tech info: Maya base mesh, Zbrush (40ish subtools), Zmapper normal maps (no displacements for sanity’s sake), textured in Photoshop/Bodypaint, rendered in Maya with MR.

here’s a link to a high-res version: Jester 3k

hope someone likes it.

Hey Alex ,

i cant see anything , just this :
Sorry, Unable to process request at this time – error 999.

I guess I’ll post some more images as I now have nothing to do with myself since I’ve decided to stop working. Hopefully tomorrow I don’t wake up hating the image and wishing I never posted it. oi.
Here’s the initial sketch and the base mesh.

smeagol: Hmm… one of my servers is acting weird. I moved the images to another one which should be ok. Weird.

Here’s what he looks like in Z:

Very good! I really like this kind of surrealistic character…

:+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

You retired?..or just stopped work?.. now you can make some more of these fantastic images!

hey a.alvarez…strange Idea ! its very cool !

your introduction to subsurfacescattering was amazing for me…there`s a lot of artist that use it and develop it…

its my personal Idea…
its time to change…creating advanced group learnings for high quality production…
change the Gnomon system…some lessons for advanced modeling by advaned modeler…some lessons for advanced texturing (making the real skin layers for subsurface…)…and someone for advanced rendering in mentalray for (like yourself)…(and some other things like advanced Hair,
creating advanced shader networks…)

pride: Nope, not retired yet… I meant I was done working on the image. Yeah, would be cool to be able to work on personal stuff all the time…thanks for the comment!

skull_monster: thank you… I’m happy that my tutorials are helpful. I recorded the entire process of making this guy, so I’ll probably end up with some tutorials for Gnomonology. It will take me awhile to go through all of them and organize it into something useful…

Here’s one very useful tip though… for those of you who use Maya and want to layer a bump map on top of a normal map, get the JSnormalmapper MR node from pixero.com. Its great. Plug the normal map from Zmapper into the normal map slot on the JSnormalmapper, check ‘flip green’, then plug the output into the ‘hidden’ attribute on a Maya bump2D node called normal Camera. Keep the Maya bump2D node set to Bump mode, then plug whatever you want into its bump value slot and plug it, as usual, into a material’s normalCamera. Took me quite awhile to figure out how to combine normal and bump without softening the effect of the normal map… so hopefully this helps someone out.

:grimacing: Wow :grimacing: love the textureing job on that one. I love the night light things on him as well. I want one he looks like he is so much fun. Cool…:+1: :sunglasses: :+1:

Hi Alex.
Do you remember me? I am Mauro.
I am arrived fourth at GW May contest, “the Freak”.
I like your “Jester”. Very interesting the luminescent parts behind of it.
My compliments. :+1:

Awesome details. Cool design, too.

Saw this great image at another forum - Great to see the steps that it took to create it. :+1:

Seavannah, Mauro, Derek, Webhead: Thank you! Yes, he does also make for a good nightlight.
