Looking good so far Jesse I actually like the first expression better. The latest one makes me think that he is singing or crying like a baby. Personally, I always thought he would be more somber during this part, like he has accepted his burden, but has faith that it is what must happen.
thanks sean - Iāve got this pose on a layer actually so I can see which one I like the best. I think Iām going to continue to play around with it and see what else I can come up with. I like his head down better because of the sheer physical strain, but Iāll try mixing the two a bit. What we have here (according to my wife) is the God side of Jesus (the first facial expression) and the human side of Jesus (the pain stricken pose)ā¦a mix will do it well.
Thatās Jesus right. This is beautiful.
Ok so hereās what I had before I tried out the previous pose. I think I do like this one better too. Iām gonna push onward now!! So much more to doā¦thanks Sean for suggesting to go back - got the thumbs up from my wife on this one too.

looking awesome. he might be in danger of getting a massive splinter in his face ⦠come to think of it though not really the worst of his worries.
Hey Jesse, amazing piece!
I was going to say that I preferred the first expression too, but youāve changed it already
Great work on the foot pushing off!! Any chance to get a closeup on that?
Canāt wait to see this one ready!
Cheers!
Nice piece, I like the second expression better. Looking forward to the completed piece;)
Wow. Love the looking up expression. Its like a cry for help. Really good. Maybe he would be bearing more weight from the cross though? that thing canāt be lite. It will also add more to the burden I think. Just a thought:).
Nice work Jesse!
Whirlwind123: yeah maybe so, but Iām still messing with the pose and once I get the hair and crown of thorns in there, Iāll be able to see what works best as far as head angle.
Ville: Thanks for the compliments! Iāll get some of the closeups soon. I still have a lot of detail to add too.
Vsions: thanks! glad you like.
brettSinclair: Thanks for the suggestion. I took your advice and changed the angle of his back and front leg to have more weight bearing down on him. I think it looks stronger now! Thanks!!!

more to come next week when I have more time to work on thisā¦
Hereās my latest progress on the crown of thorns. I had initially planned on doing this with the new fancy Zspheres 2 but I just got impatient with it and just jumped back into 3ds max and created them in there. I used splines initially for the main winding vine pieces that were subdivided so the faces were square (for optimum zbrush sculpting) and the thorns were cones that were skewed and placed along the splines using the Spacing Tool in max. Then I rotated them about their local axis at random spots. Then I exported each vine (there are 6) along with their respective thorns into individual obj files. So then I imported these 6 obj vine/thorns pieces and arranged them using the Move brush and made the twisting and overlapping action with careful manipulation of each subtool. Theyāre now at the point where I need to add some surface texturing to make them feel more organic.
Iām about to move onto placing 3D alpha-ed hair so weāll see how that goesā¦
Hey Jesse, great model mateā¦
the only thing is the earsā¦little strange yet, but keep rocking on this!
very naturalistic. Glad to see someone taking on this subject in particular. Also love your studioās reel (zbrush especially). How do you like it there?
Cool artworks sir Jesseā¦:D:D:D
hey jesse, your crucified figure is comming along nicely. Will you make it more dramatic?, he looks a bit to nice for being beaten and batterd. this can be I real good piece, keep em coming.
Longhi - thanks brutha. The ears probably wonāt get much visibility since Iām hoping to get the long hair going and they might get covered up. If the final hair style and composition ends up revealing the ears more I can clean those up.
monteford2002 - thanks! I thought it was about time for me personally to do something more than just monsters and angry looking people. And yeah greengrass is swell. Iām one of the owners here actually and things have been going great! Trying to get our character and concept design department off the groundā¦
DarkHalo: Wow! three smilies - thanks! hehe
mutte696: Hey dude! Drama is definitely the missing element here as Iām waiting on getting all the pieces added to the scene first. Right now, Iām working on the 3D hair in Zbrush, placing all the pieces and styling up the hairdo so it reflects the moment. Once I do that, itās off to adding the battering and torture that He went through and all the tactile stuff that will make this scene more touching. Iām taking my time so I do it rightā¦really looking forward to bringing this to life and trying to make this my best work yet. More to come as it developsā¦
As a faithful man, I love this project!
One small crit, and this is really personal preference. Iāve always thought that youād see some of the thorns actually puncturing the flesh of his forehead. The whole idea was to humiliate him, and to cause him pain.
Again this is just my preference and if this is for a family viewing, then maybe thatās not what you should do.
Other than that small preference issue, I am loving this project! Keep going!!
dustbin1_uk: thanks for the comment. I also thought about having some of the thorns puncture him so I still may at some point.
Hereās where Iām at currently. After a good amount of time, Iāve got the hair geometry added and adjusted the crown of thorns to wrap around the hair now. The crown could use a bit more textural work but this is good enough for me at this point so I can go on to detailing out the rest of the piece. Letās just say Iām a bit worn out with tweaking 3D hair and thorns right now!

Looking amazing. Just check the robe. You have some collisions. Like the neck and the right shoulder area where the clothing folds in. Also I think his a tad squint:).
Congrats on the hair and thorns. Its looking fantastic
Very cool sculpt I like it very much.
