Jesse Sandifer's Sketchbook

thanks sandpiper!

Awesome!

Jesse, Lovin your works bro:):).

This book has a set of poses in the back showing muscles in pencil shaded view and line anatomical drawing view with labels. EG: it has back and front views of arms up, arms down, shoulders flexed etc. The book is highly recommended for muscle study and bones.

While I continue to work on this big hero battle scene, I thought I’d post a series of timelapse videos of the gargoyle that I’m finally allowed to release publicly. I did them for 3DCreative if you remember.

I broke it up into segments for those of you who prefer to watch more of the detail stages of sculpting rather than the building stages or vice versa. Hope this helps anyone out there!

Great sculpt Jesse, thanks for sharing the vids, I hope to be able to watch these tonight.

Here’s another set of timelapses. This one is for the Orc with the ax I created for 3DCreative. It’s a speed sculpt so there aren’t as many videos.

Jesse,
Thanks so much for posting the gargoyle creation series!!! Maybe, in another 25 years or so I’ll have as much knowledge of human anatomy as you do  . Your knowledge helps with the speed of your sculpt. I enjoyed watching the creation of the skin folds. Are you planning a 3D Print? It would be great having this guy looking down at your work. I was just curious as to the number of polys of the final character?
Gary

hyper1 - thanks man. I’m glad someone is watching the videos. Perhaps I should edit them down in the future to only show the really interesting stuff (if there is any! ha!). Timelapse videos can be a drain to watch after a while…heh

final poylcount was about 12 mil?? Can’t remember…a lot though. I’ve thought about doing a print but it’s all a bit pricey for me right now unfortunately!!

Here’s the latest of the work I’m doing on the big battle scene. Textured version of the big screaming dude. I’m not sure I’m big on the tattoos but the client wants em.

What a noob!
Skintones bruises etc look very nice and now this.
They look as if they where made in prison, have a bad resolution
and totally dont fit into an time this guy comes from!
I mean a tramp stamp over the chest??
Arabic stuff on the head?

First you should try to talk him into other tatto desings.
I mean imagine him having some classic maori tattoo or such!
That would look great.

Also they look 100%black polypainted at the moment.
I would try to add them in photoshop and use some overlays.
Tattos fade with time and blend with the skintones becoming gray and such.
I mean at the time this guy lives tattos werent made in a day
so he doesnt really look convincing having all similar coloured ones.
But mainly its the designs.

Im glad this is not your dicission as it wouldve baffeled me sorta
Rest is looking very good altho the front skin is painted better than the
back i find.

wow - haven’t been called a noob in forever. :o

I see what you’re saying about the tattoos. I’m not from that world so I don’t know what tats classify tramp stamps and what say “badass”. Forgive me there. I’m thinking of just taking the tattoos off anyway. I don’t think they go well with the time period (he’s supposed to be biblical philistine). Guess I could try the Maori ones you were talking about - had to look that up.

I don’t want the tattoos to take away from all the other work I’ve done.

Hahahaha not ur the noob! You are a pro youre client is the noob!
I thought that was clear ^^
Id either remove them or try other ones too.
I mean looking at it from a distance it could work with tattos and
at that time there were already some around.
I mean that frozen guy they found in the alps called ötzi here had some
and hes almost stone age  .
http://www.planet-wissen.de/pics/IEPics/tempx_oetzi_tatoos_g.jpg
they look rather simple tho
Looking at old tattos it seems it was more a all or nothing mentality
http://assets3.qype.com/uploads/photos/0018/7234/Hintern_01_gallery.jpg
so i guess adding one or two just to make him look cool
isnt very correct historically
Anyways if some one ever again calls you noob just call them a lyar  :+1: :+1:

ha! Thought I was beginning to lose self-awareness.

I found some new ones that I think might work. The client initially mentioned that they would love to see a tattoo down the side of his screaming neck. So I think I’ll try to just handpaint one (instead of just using googled ones) and put it on the neck and then have one going across his left arm. We won’t even see anything from the back in the final view so I’ll just dump that for now.

Here’s the guy - NO TATTOOS!

gs01.jpg

Whoa! Killer sculpt  :+1: :+1: :+1:

really nice work.
If the client wants the tattoos you could always suggest more of a tribal paint style instead of the ink to them. It might be more fitting with the character and not take a way from the great work you have already done.

:grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

Can you post your brush settings that you used in the timelapse? Especially in part 3, where you define his arms, back and stomach.
It looks like you just use the default brushes, but the result looks a bit more comfortable, are there any hidden tricks?

Great skills by the way!

zipfelklatscher: I usually use the same brushes for everything I do. Mainly blocking with clay and claytubes, move, and inflate. I try not to use inflate too much because it makes everything kinda puffy if you aren’t careful. I like to slowly build up forms. I’ve been also using the flatten and dam standard brushes more frequently lately too. I cut in most of my muscular forms with the dam standard brush and smooth out and build from there. Hope that helps!

Here’s a new shot of the dude screaming with a different tattoo. More tribal and maori influenced. I wanted to go with the Mike Tyson face tat but thought it might look kinda silly.
