Hey all,
every time I post something I always mention that it was rushed or that I was messing around trying to learn something new ,well it’s time to post something that I am going to take my time with.
So here is the start of a portrait of one of my heroes, Thomas Jefferson.
I started it after work 2 nights ago, and will continue (slowly) until satisfied (uh…yeah!)
Anyway, C&Cs welcome
Patton
Like this much.
Terrific job on hair.
( do you make toupees)
friend this is a great model as always from you!
Im sure your texture work will be also wonderful!
Thanks for this

A youthful Jefferson methinks.
A fantastic start.
It looks to me that you now need to sculpt with symmetry off to get those facial quirks.
Thanks guys,
Boozy: Methinks you are correct.
I need to work on the age , and give the old “quirk knob” a twist or two!

Great work, great start, I’ll be watching this one closely
Hey , had a little time to play today,
any C&Cs welcome.
I have to say, it gets tough when all you have to work from are a few paintings and a couple sculpts, and they all look like different people.
Still trying to pin down what makes up the “Jefferson” look ,it’s a B#%$H!

Very nice indeed. Look forward to seeing the developments.
Very impressive! Are the clothes complete Zbrush work?
Really nice work, the clothes are exceptional.
Thanks,
The clothes were simple meshes from lightwave ,But the major tweeking was Zbrush.

I’m still working slow, but I had to get some color on it!
Here is a Zbrush render with some photoshop hair.
I have to work on the wrinkles, it is a tough fight not to over do it,I don’t want him too old, but I don’t want him to look as if he had a face lift!
After that it will be the up hill battle I call MENTAL RAY! I suck at rendering!!
Maybe I should look into some DVDs, any advice?
PATTON
You seem to be doing just fine all by yourself I dont know why you’re asking for our help. Nothing really to critique you’re where you should be at this point.
Dude!
Really nice. I like how he’s progressing.

Patton,
Keep up the great work mate.

wow,
Really nice scuplt and beautiful, colorful textures!
I saw “the hills have eyes” the other night. It was over the top. The brain person was amazing. Anyway, I’m really replying from your comment on help with Mental Ray. I bought the Gnomon DVD series on Mental Ray by Matt Hartle. He breaks down the module in an easier to understand fashion. Things like sampling, lighting, IBLs, global illumination, final gather and so on.
The dvds have helped me start to understand the render engine and what buttons to push in order to make the most out of a scene. Now its the only render I use.
Thanks for the inspiration to get up to speed on Z.
Beautiful work! Love the hair and that “old painting” look to the colors. Very impressive. The sculpted version is great too.
This is great Patton!

Thanks Guys,
bigBlueDog: thanks for the advice, I have a DVD from Digital Tutors , it covers alot of ground but it’s not very “character” friendly , unless your character is a shiny car guy, I need some help on getting character heads lit & looking good.
Gammillart: awww shucks! (everyone buy Kerrys book on Basil Gogos!!)
frogspasm: Dude!
x-titan & voodoomonkey: thanks much!!!
ryankingslien: thanks, again and again!

Inspirational stuff there Patton I know what you mean about trying to find what makes Jefferson look like Jefferson… he is recognizable in all the portraits Ive seen, yet trying to work from different interpretations makes you have to “see” things that arent exactly there
