Jason, I’m not seeing an option anywhere in Script Editor to set the type to Universal or PPC… Am I using the wrong editor or something? I checked the app prefs and all the menus…:o
Save it, so you can edit it, deault. Then save as Application Bundle, to be Universal. Or it defaults to PPC.
Hi Jason,
Yeah, I was doing exactly what you said; just didn’t realize that’s what the application bundle is for. Saved with delays of 2,5,10,15,20,25, and 30. Other than the time it takes to launch, didn’t notice any difference. Want me to keep testing? Suggestions? Anybody else testing this? Hello? Geez, I guess when they get it to work they go away happy:rolleyes:
I’ll be gone for a week, but if I’m not murdered at my family reunion I’ll check back:p
Not necessarily, in my case I’ve more or less given up. I’ve tried all the tips I can find here and nothing seems to improve my chances of starting ZB significantly. Sometimes it works, mostly it doesn’t. I’m hoping changes to Rosetta in 10.4.9 (if it ever appears!) or maybe 10.5 improve the situation.
dzturbd, see you when you get back.
BazC, you really need to provide more info.
Something you 2 have running is messing with you. We’ve gotten things running on nearly every model of Intel system. I just tested the demo on some iMacs an MacMini’s this past week all worked beautifuly right off the get go.
Stuartpa had some serious issues, but all seemed to be due to various apps installed. I know from my initial experience that is what started me looking into this. Zbrush ran fine, everytime originally for a week, then I installed some stuff I needed for coding - BANG, Zbrush had issues opening. Currently it opens everytime run from the script, first try.
So I’d really like to help you out if you’ll work through it.
Nothing much to tell, I have a 2.66GHz Core2duo Mac Pro, 256mb Geforce 7300GT and 1gig of Apple RAM. No PPC apps running, just the default widgets in Dashboard (all Intel) and I’m not sure how to turn those off. I think my minimal RAM installation is the most likely problem, I’ll be adding more soon. My greatest hope is that an OS update will improve things though.
What kind of poly counts are you guys able to play with? Are you into the millions? How is the responsiveness when sculpting, using alphas, etc.?
I’m looking around at sculpting apps (well, really just Silo and ZBrush, because I’m on a Mac, so Mudbox is out, and a little too expensive for me, anyway) and am interested in what you folks on Intel Macs are able to do.
I have a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo iMac 2GB RAM 256mb RadeonX1600
Thanks…
Yes BazC, you have barely enough for the OS. Max RAM, equals Max fun and make sure it’s paired!
bobzilla, you can do almost anything with that. See my setup, first post. I have several sculpts hitting the 10 million current limit in ZBrush, very responsive. Work is pretty much realtime even under emulation. The new version out at somepoint in the future will go well beyond that and it’s a free upgrade if you buy. (Not selling, just informing). Feel free to check the dragon and zphere threads in my signature. Happy to answer any questions…
Thanks very much for the quick response.
That’s great news. My main app is Cinema4D so I will most likely use the “import-sculpt-export displacement” dance as my workflow.
like a lot of folks, ZBrush seems complicated to get started, but the results are quite astonishing.
Thanks for starting this thread. Very informative. Mac users are sometimes left flapping in the breeze…
bobzilla, if you do a search you find alot of Cinema4D users here!
I finally got around to buying Zbrush and was troubled that a UB has not been released yet, but thanks to you guys I got the script to work on the first try! Any ideas when Pixologic will release a UB or update that will solve this issue?
Welcome Todd Levesque, glad you are rockin out of the box!!
They’ll do it for 2.5, no point splitting resources at this point.
Bought an Intel Mac some days ago, had not tested Zbrush 2 on it before I signed up for the 5 week Sculpting and Texturing in ZBrush at GnomonOnline. Had a lot of troubles with the startup prosess, it seems like this script helping alot!
Thank’s
Hello Lasse Eriksen Bjørseth, glad it helped you. Keep us informed of issues or enhancements.
Been running ZB on my Macpro nearly everyday with no issues at all, I have set the delay to 8 & I usually get ZB fired up within 2-3 attempts…
Now just hurry up with ZB3…
So glad to hear that Buckie. Every one that gets it running easier enjoys a little more freedom!!
Thanks for keeping us informed, it well help new users.
As an aside and don’t ask for more than is being offered. For those that jumped up and bought IntelMac technology.
Pixolator stated:
Note to Macintosh users: Since you are now also able to launch Windows applications, we will be pleased to make available to you a free-of-charge transfer of license to the Windows version, this will allow you to take advantage of the new version as soon as it is released.
I can assure you that things run very, very well under BootCamp and/or Parallels Desktop. In fact many speed tests posted by the pure Windows machines are easily attained. With the new Parallels Beta’s providing even more power, specifically the upcoming memory sharing (Windows app will just run like a native OSX app) you will probably hold your own on anything you want to do. You can currently access your BootCamp structure without rebooting - with Parallels.
This is not to say native OSX (Universal) ZBrush isn’t coming or worth the wait, but to keep you from committing suicide! NOTE: Parallels is changing it’s policy and will have a ‘fee for period’ structure (see Parallels site) in the future and this may influence your actions as well.
NOTE: I don’t work for Pixologic and have zero influence. Just trying to keep the anxiety down. I can’t do much for the PPC guys though. I think I’ll have a version of each (Windows and Mac), but that’s me.
I’ll still help anyone on this thread that I can with current version of Zbrush.
Tried every delay in steps of 1 up to 15 in addition to the delays I already tried (see earlier). No change. Still, it only takes a few tries so it’s not a big deal. Better than waiting for a Universal Binary or having to get Parallels just for this;)
Well dzturbd, I’m glad your functional in your endeavours. Strange though, as that script seems to resolve the issue pretty much for everyone else when run each and everytime. I just have to get my hands on a system like yours for a day and I can probably figure that out for you. Sooner or later, someone around here will have one…
Apple have released 10.4.9 updater, it will be interesting to see if it helps with ZB2 startup problems!
Edit: Nope, no difference whatsoever!
