Guess I better post my reference. Honestly I have never seen two that look alike. It’s why faces vary so much. The ones you posted don’t look like any of my reference. It’s all a matter of taste. I thought you were maybe referring to teeth count. I missed one on the top. Working 18 hours a day so I miss counted. Kind of have to sneak in Zbrushing when I can. I included a skull that has a very pointed top as well. Skulls can be either virtually flat on top or nearly hatchet shaped. Like I say overall shape is a matter of taste given the natural variations.

again, even in that photo your anatomy is off on your model, particularly the eye sockets, teeth and (crap forgot the name of it…) the nubby-things on the bottom ends of the skull are too far out and too far forward in reference to your model as well as they are a little too far down and too pointy.

other than that, its good.

*sorry if this is annoying you, i’m just a stickler for details and accuracy.

Your issues not mine. I made more changes and mapped it. Got too much work to do to worry about it. It does what I need it to do. Thought I’d post it for the hell of it. Wasn’t trying to annoy anyone.

I think you should rather be the sticker for details and accuracy to your own works rather than on other people’s work…
Everyone’s trying their best here to reach a good level including you and it’s not by annoying people with your critics that you’d improve…

Just sit back and analyze your work first before commenting on others!

I can remember a thread on CG talk in which guys were cutting up the proportions of the old masters themselves.
I agree with the earlier comments by Belseth that bones and anatomy are completely subjective. If it looks good that’s good enough. If you get a job in the industry and your boss says the model needs work, then and only then does the small details matter. Your skull is great… keep posting:+1:

The rant seemed bizzarre. I’ve been a working artist, sculptor by trade, for a couple of decades now. The only time it’s not subjective is when you are doing something like medical reference. Whatever looks good is the rule.

one, i already do thank you very much; two, criticism is good for artist; three i was just pointing out his error is his piece that can be corrected and four don’t assume i don’t do it to my own work.

The issue isn’t whether I made a mistake or not the issue is I didn’t care in the first place. I didn’t set out to make an anatomical skull. Not sure why this upset you so much. If you want an anatomical skull I strongly suggest you go for it and have fun. I’m a working artist and simply don’t have the time to stress about unimportant details. If I worked anymore hours in the day I’d have to abandon sleep all together so I cut corners where I can. I needed the front side of a basic skull for a piece I’m doing that’s it.

I won’t be responding anymore. Several people encouraged me to maintain this thread but I plan to drop it myself. You got to learn to relax. Stress about your own work and not everyone elses. Not sure why this got to be such an issue and I wish I hadn’t posted it in the first place. It’s a bloody skull not the Mona Lisa. The joke is it’ll probably take up 2% to 3% of the final image it’s part of. That’s why I don’t care.

Looks very good to me. Seems like you have an excellent control already of ZBrush. looking forward to seeing more of yours as well as a softshaded version of the skull?

The only thing that seems off to me is the teeth ( said the guy who never models teeth;)). A more circular front, stilll with irregularities, would work better for me.

I still love the model though.

Thanks alot for the feedback. I think I like painting in Zbrush as much as modeling. Still having trouble with the 2.5D parts but surface painting is a real joy. I went pretty subtle on the coloring. I was afraid of it coming off stylized if it got a little over the top. There’s still a weird bump on the outside of the forehead of the skull but I’ll take care of that in the comp. They were really kind of quick and dirty. Can’t wait to add the scraggly hairs and vines but I decided to do them in Photoshop. Just couldn’t figure out a good way in Zbrush.

neuroticgothguy: I just looked at your gallery…you have no room to talk. whatever is not an argument and if you are going to post an opinion about anatomy then do it in a constructive way…if you don’t like how this forum works…there are many many other graphics forums made just for the likes of you. But until you post some fantastic anatomically perfect model and do it again and again then no one is going to respect any opinion you have regarding the matter so save yourself some typing.

Thanks for the support. It did get a bit surreal. It’s just a silly skull. The last image I posted still has a fair amount of work to go but it’ll be a few months before I get back to it and several had asked to see a final on the same thread. I need to get the rest of the composition laid out before I can do the final lighting and coloring. Also the skulls will likely get tweaked and aged. In the end they’ll be half obscured by jungle growth as well.

It’s the best forum I’ve ever found so it’s doubly sad when you run onto people that are out to be negative. I’ve gotten some great criticism on several posts and made changes accordingly. There are some staggering artists on the forum and I like the fact that you have to push a bit to try to measure up. Easy to get lax when it’s just you.

I’ll probably start a thread next week for the overall image. Right now I’m modeling green bits, gnarled trees and such. I’ve also started on the human characters but I maxed my ram and will have to wait until next week when I can swing the upgrade to finish them. Pretty excited with the overall image and it should be a lot of fun when it’s done.

There is nothing wrong or “a bit off” with the anatomy of your skull.
