Enchanted Forest: Keepers of the Gate. WIP... Update #6

Hi
Occasionally, while ‘surfing’ the web, I may come upon a contest/challenge with a topic that I find interesting and at times (mostly when testing a beta version of ZBrush) I try to participate in such event. The WIP images that will be posted in this thread are for such event and the current topic is “Enchanted Forest”.

As for the image…

I first did a quick (640x480 image size) modeling/texturing test, which resulted in the image bellow…

…and this is the 2nd test that was done in double size canvas…

A smaller section with slightly better jpg quality…

Some areas are covered by a slimy/sticky surface; these areas are for several slimy-crawlers that will be added at a later stage.

Still to come: further tree modeling and refinements, foliage, background, environment effects and central creature/s…

Questions and ‘121-feedback’ are certainly welcome

Note: Following the upcoming MacWorld and Siggraph shows we will be starting ZBrush challenges and contests here at ZBC

Great work as usual Pix. A few questions, what type of tree is it, and why so many roots, and has the tree been recently uprooted ?
Eagerly looking forward to the updates.

The section in number two is very interesting to me, because I find myself straining to rationalize the form I see there into a humanoid form…This is probably because the texture is so rich, it looks like a kind of skin, rather than bark, which I find really fascinating…
Thanx for posting this Ofer…I love to watch your developmental sequence and this looks like it will be a ball to watch!!
(And I’m really looking forward to the ‘ZBrush Challenges’… :+1: :sunglasses: :+1:

very nice, detailed work, you could maybe, stick in some noticably broken or busted limbs, i really like the lower right hand section, the variation of bark, colours and shapes is cool. :small_orange_diamond:

This is abstract expressionism in 3D. Wow! Once you put the creatures in there though, I think you should put in a more realistic background like fog, or a landscape. Otherwise, Wow! Good luck in the contest :+1:

very realistic…it should make for a kewl backdrop for Zcreatures… :+1: :+1: :+1:

Verry good and good texture, can you tell
more about the Challenges/Contests.

As alwais very very realistic image Pixolator!!! One question: " This image are possible only with a new version of zBrush or also with the current???" TNX for the answer!!!

Fantastic stuff as usual Pix. Can’t wait for more images!

This is stunning Pixolator. As crazy as all those roots are, you’ve balanced the whole scene perfectly. Somthing which isnt always easy to do (most people rely on symmetrical balance) I applaude you on that.

As for future suggestion. Theres not much I really can say that could improve this peice at all. If anything I would suggest that in the second image, the tree might need to be a little more grainy, not so smooth and ‘fleshy’ like. You could possibly add a bit more of a grain to the wood, that would also compliment the “slimy / sticky” surface, and make it stand out a little more in contrast with the rougher wood texture.

Even if you didnt want to go that way. Maybe if you had just some areas of the tree, more grainy and rougher looking. I think it would create a great contrast with the sticky wet surface.

But thats just a suggestion  Your rocking on as is

Hello Pix
Incredible simulation
Maybe except form in the red circle
too more geometric shapes and repetitive and “flat” . I think little noisy on the XYZ will be more forested
I notice the “trademark” in the green rectangle
Good luck for your contest

I agree somewhat with frenchy about some of the flat fiddly bits.

However that main twisty trunk that looks like a bent human form is awesome.

I’ve bushwalked through lots of places that looked like this. In the final image there should be lots of splotchy lichens on the bark. with flat greeny-blue colours, not furry lichen but that flat stuff that grows on rocks.

hahaha… From the thumbnails that line the top at the main page of this forum, that image frenchy uploaded looks like a soldier who has been shot at war. Lost his upper body, bleeding all over the ground just his legs left there in the shrubbery. Am I the only one who sees this?

What have you been smoking pete.

Yeah it does look a bit bloody, however it works next to the thumbs of Bruce the butcher.

Interesting image,very effective. :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

Wow, I looked at the test image and thought, “That is an incredible image! How does he do it?”
And then I saw the real image and the shapes are really incredible! Considering the quality of the test image the final image will be amazing!

Fascinating work Pix!, looking forward to those challenges too :+1: :+1: :+1:

Great work Pix!!!

Question 1) Did you use the new rendering engine?
Question 2) How did you curl those branches or are the seperate pieces?
Question 3) Did you texture it in TextureMaster (seems like a very complicated process considering the mass of entwined roots/branches) or did you drop the object and then texture it?
Question 3) Did you use the “Rusting the Idol” technique to texture it?
Question 4) Can I borrow a few of your brain cells for a couple of days? :stuck_out_tongue:

These are awesome and the first one especially fits the enchanted forest theme perfect I think.
