Dustin Brown Sketchbook

the face hugger ist quite good. especialy the material in max. the sub surface scattering is cool.
the lighting is a bit heavy. I like most only the key light pic. you see there most of details because of the amount of shadows.

good work :+1:

VERY nice for a first go. I love the vibe paintings give, a nice contrast to 3D and the clean CG stuff we see all the time.

My eye gets caught on the dark around the right eye (his left) partly because it’s so much value in one area (nice focal point), but the eye seems slightly off to me as well. The nose looks a bit crooked too. Its just some small things, that may really even bee there in the photo. Its possible he has a slightly crooked nose  . Anyway great job Dustin. :+1:

I love traditional art. I need to go back and do another painting soon myself. I have a couple canvases and paints sitting around drying up.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I’m back on this guy for a bit.

Did some paintover work to explore the attitude I want to give this guy. I want him to be a grease monkey of sorts.

[wip03.jpg]

Great start. I think the cigar is perfect for his character. The stain on the shirt is nice as well. I dont know what the curly wire is leading too but whatever it is, it fits. What is the pen looking thing on his chest? Thats the only thing that seems out of place to me. Anyway, glad to see some more of your work. Looking forward to more. :+1:

I’m almost done modeling the accessories in max.

I’ve put my regular projects on ice for a few days while I try to get something knocked out for the last DW IV mini challenge.

Nice base mesh, i see thats a CV radio on his shoulder. I like the new strap and necklace, hes really coming together. :+1:

Final DWIV mini challenge ends tomorrow night. Wrapping up in time shouldn’t be a problem. It’s a small dragon’s head mounted on a ram’s horn, and I’m trying to find an interesting way to handle the junction between the two. I did some sketches last night, and I may stretch the skin in areas of the neck and nail it into the horn. That should look nice and brutal

Any last minute suggestions?

effing cool and unique concept. :+1: The one without the head piece shows off the creature a bit more in my opinion. I can picture this thing with many colors and textures. I look forward to seeing what you come up with in the finished piece.

Thanks man. Here’s the final version for the contest, it ends in a few hours. I’ll probably make some more improvements though. I didn’t do any fancy texturing or compositing because they wanted these to be one color.

Beautifully presented Dustin. You have a lot of craftsmanship and pride in your work, and it really shows. No crits really, what made you decide to add the head wear? I like the old school nails holding the tattered parts down. Anyway, good stuff as always man. Always looking forward to seeing more art from you.

hey dustin!
the creature sculpt is pretty nice n well sculpted…
oil painting is also luking gud in first attempt.
keep it up!

Thanks guys. Contest is over, but I’m continuing to work on this guy. This would make a neat trophy maybe. Anyway, it’s not done yet.

Great worx Dustin! Really digging the trophy, good you’re taking the time to finish him. :+1: ! The nails holding the head on the horn are great - might seem like a small detail- but tell a lot on how you work and think :+1: !

Cool updates! Good work on the dragon/horn. Good to see someone else using traditional mediums too. Oils are very cool. Not done any for a while though. Keep it up! :+1:

I really think you moved in the right direction with colors. These definitely pop more and give a bit more evil feel for me. The removal of the eye shields is nice, gives it life again. The headgear was nice, I just don’t think it complimented the creature. Anyway, you continue to improve this guy, :+1: great work Dustin.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Here are some facial anatomy studies from 3d.sk photos.

I’m back on this guy. Here’s a simple lighting test, nothing too fancy.

I grow more envious every post you put up!

Great work on both the facial anatomy and the fifth element mechanic dude:p

I assume you used Decimation Master on him for that render? I need to sit down and dedicate some time to improving my skills, I feel like im falling behind. MAGNIFIIIIIIII !!! (inside joke). Anyway, I wish I could critique something but its all looking good to me. I guess if I had to pick something it would be the top eyelid on a few eyes look too flat on the transition, maybee round the under part thats going towards the eye. Great stuff Dustin. :+1:
