It’s finally time for a little update!

I want to show you my latest artwork created with ZBrush. The Title is "Saving the Alien Girl" and I created it for the recent CG Challenge on CGSociety.org. I received an honorary mention for my entry. [<!---->](http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%2799206%27,%27Saving_the_Alien_Girl.jpg%27,1,0%29) My work process is documented in detail in my [challenge entry thread on CGTalk](http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=235&t=611799) but I thought I might share some more specific detail about this project here at ZBrush Central. First some details in 100% resolution: [<!---->](http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%2799207%27,%27Saving_The_Alien_Girl_Details.jpg%27,1,0%29) The image is completely sculpted and rendered in ZBrush. Only the clouds in the background are painted in photoshop. The final foreground scene was composed of several subobjects which together reached a polycount of about 14 million. Once the foreground objects were placed and dropped onto the 2.5D canvas I added all the plant details and the leafs and branches on the tree. After having everything arranged on the canvas, I rendered several passes which were then composed in Photoshop. I created a little overview of the most important passes: [<!---->](http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%2799210%27,%27Saving_The_Alien_Girl_Compositing_Tut.jpg%27,1,0%29) The background elements (the trees, the valley, the planets) were created separately on several layers and were composed similar to the foreground elements. Here's a shot of the background planets, which are also sculpted: [<!---->](http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%2799208%27,%27Saving_The_Alien_Girl_Planets.jpg%27,1,0%29) And here is a test scene for the trees in the midground: [<!---->](http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%2799209%27,%27Saving_The_Alien_Girl_Trees.jpg%27,1,0%29) For those trees I used the Deco Brush on the 2.5D canvas like I allready showed on the first page of this thread. That technique is a nice mix of 2D and 3D and fitted quite nicely into the image, I think. Sculpting was quite straightforward for this project. I used a human basemesh for the three figures, did a quite elaborate retopo on the monster and used ZSpheres for the treetrunk. The most interesting asset in the scene - from a modelling standpoint - might be the blaster pistol. Here's a little step-by-step: [<!---->](http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%2799211%27,%27Saving_The_Alien_Girl_Pistol.jpg%27,1,0%29)

To sum it up: I created the basic form of the pistol with ZSpheres, then created a Unified Skin and sculpted the raw shapes. I tried to clean the thing up in the retopo. It remained a bit bendy but fitted quite nicely into the scene.

Ok, that’s a brief description of 8 weeks worth of evening work. If you are interested in the concept sketches and loads of sculpting WIP images just visit the thread on CGTalk mentioned above.ZBC_THUMB.jpg

This is nothing like the rest of the stuff in this thread, kind of surprising. Keep exploring this style it’s really working for you i think.

My only crit is that tiny little space betweren the creature’s thumb and the girl’s body, makes it look like hes not really holding on to her and she’s more just sitting in his hand. That’s an easy thing to paint over in PS and get rid of though.

that image was my fav in the 3d comptetition - great stuff!

Sick man… Fabulous…
5 Stars and top row to me!:+1: :+1: :+1:

Could you post more pics of the different elements and non textured models?

top row for sure!

this is darn cool. great colors and all.

Excellent stuff and yes, do continue to describe your work. Highly appreciated.
But dude… the 2d images… sighhh… there must be a punishment… ok… only 5 stars from me!
Lemo

Wow. That is absolutely beautiful. Great job really.

Wow! :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

Thats awesome, especially the fact that its rendered in zbrush ! :grimacing:

Awesome! Just Awesome! A very beautiful quality illustrative image.

Ok, since there’s so much nice respond I gathered some of the WIP images. I have to take them form the CGTalk-Thread since I’m not at home at the moment. Later I’ll try to come up with some exclusive content.

The tree (leafs painted in for previsualization):

The polypainted scene (cavity masked painting rocks hard!):

In this last one you can see very well how much is done in compositing. The painted models look quite dull. I began to become very nervous at this point because I did not know if it would turn out like I imagined. Fortunately you can do wonders in compositing.

Here’s some of the conceptual 2D artworks I did for the project:

The Alien Girl ‘Yun’:

And that was the very first sketch I did for the project:

What a load of images. I hope you enjoy it!

i love it! thanks for the walkthrough on the building of this awesome piece. the blend of the 2d and 3d is fantastic! 5 stars from me!

Awsome Work!!! Really Cool Illustration! :+1: :sunglasses: :+1:

lovely, reminds me of paul bonner’s art :+1:

just awesome !

Amazing piece of art! Thank you for the make of screenshots

cool pose

automatic top row! you’ve mastered zbrush in less than a year. congrats =)

Fantastic image! You’ve come a long way since those first posts.

Keep up the great work!

I really love everything about your final image here. However, it’s the colors that really make it pop for me! Excellent work - looking forward to seeing more details and ZBC exclusives!
