thank for the base mesh. would come in useful.
Fantastic mesh, but I must be missing something with your base meshes. They show up as .7z files, which my Zbrush doesn’t recognize. What am I doing wrong?
Great stuff! love your zsphere base! Thanks for posting your process!
You are all quite welcome
Mudd – don’t let the final image fool you, it took quite a while to get the spheres situated in such a way to avoid pinching. I think I may have played around with the skinning parameters some to get something I was happy with. Also, the result is certainly not perfect, retopology was absolutely needed!
Imaginerie (and everyone else) – They are 7zip files, which is a slightly better compression than regular .zip. I meant to mention it in the post but I forgot. You can download 7zip for windows from http://www.7-zip.org/
Sorry for the confusion! :o

Wow this is awesome something to get me started you have no idea how much this helps !!!
Poop: Thanks! Glad you liked it and you’re welcome of course:)
Clubber: I’m glad it can help you – I have searched for base meshes in the past for various things, and I know how much it helps to find one. Its the main reason I posted it!

simple caracter, simple pose, and VERY efficient. Grats. Good job.
Thanks, Sample! yep, I was going for a ‘green’ approach haha
Awesome of you to post a solid base mesh and your process. This is my inexperience speaking, but does ZBrush not translate the topology very well from ZSpheres (I’m assuming this based on your initial cleanup of the mesh using topogun)? …and if so, is there a way in ZBrush to let the user dictate topology preferences rather than the topology being procedurally generated?
Actually, it does a pretty good job for the most part. There are tweakable options with them that can improve the result also. However, I find the topology they create by default hard to control, and not evenly distributed enough for my tastes. Often when you move a sphere slightly, or add another one, it radically changes the loops generated. The places that are the most difficult to get good topo from the spheres, in my opinion, are hands, feet, and the face. I also don’t like poles and tris that they create where they’re used as endpoints in a chain ( like nipples, fingertips, noses, etc)
There was/is a big thread on using zspheres to generate a good humanoid topology, although using the old version of zspheres I think. I don’t know if it is still around, didn’t see it in my quick search, but I didn’t look too hard. I know they had better luck getting faces and hands looking good than I did. Also, the new groups loop feature could probably be used to improve topology results and help alleviate mesh density issues.
Another option would be to use the retopology tools in ZBrush to rework the original adaptive skin, but I find the tools harder to work with for large tasks (biggest problem for me is how the points don’t always snap to the reference mesh surface)
I do like using the spheres though, they’re slightly faster than subdivision modeling for me for some tasks, and much easier to move around and adjust a form. they’re great for concepting, and just plain fun to use.
Finally, I am in no way an expert on using them, so there are likely techniques and tips that I’m not aware of!
hope that helps

hi… you did well on this model. is the texture hand painted or photo? Ha ha i’m still new and i’m not sure how to tell between the two.
Thanks Sleepy – the texture is hand painted in Zbrush (polypaint). Mostly just subtle coloring to help the material shaders along, really.
Very informative. I see what you mean about the poles on the tips of the fingers. I’ll have to play around with some of the topology features.
great stuff dude and thanks for the beautiful basemesh
Great character, I like the style a lot
Thanks Noise and JF
hey dude i am using your base mesh on a new wip check it out
and thanks againhttp://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=8839
Impressive
Very Nice Work …
@Noise: Awesome, glad to see it in use! good start; brings back some memories . I’d probably play the game again if all the characters were busty gals…
@anshumanart: Thanks, glad you liked it!
Cheers!
