Darukin's Sketchbook

exillent Stuffs…jst awsme…

Hey, thanks Morgaine, Arthaven and Gurjeet!

Yes I agree I was lazy and burnt out, and did a very lousy attempt at the texture, reviewing it the last few days, let’s face it the colours are flat and it kinda sucks. It took me 2 days cause I rushed it. I’ve been working on it this week, as well as the lighting, and it’s MUCH better right now, will post it when finished but have to take my time (I’ve been going through my checklist and more). The problem is now I regret and are embarrassed to have posted the last few images and not sure how I didn’t notice how incomplete it was (even the eyes are too similar mat to skin etc, also the base’s material is completely out of place and too distracting for instance) =) it’s like damage has been done and I must redeem it with the new render I’m working on.

Let’s say the above is merely a WIP

There’s no going back, I don’t want to sign off this character till it’s decent enough for a demo reel, and the last few images are far from it. Like I said my current progress is MUCH better now as far as textures/lighting/skin etc.

Thank you for your support guys

That’s part of the process though, artistically, mentally, emotionally, socially. Just think that you may not have come to those conclusions had you not posted it. Or it may have taken a MUCH longer time to come to those conclusions. Creating art and posting art is all about exposing yourself no matter what (for better or worse which always ends up being for better). Don’t censor yourself because then you’ll be hurting your progress.

Nice to see the redemption attitude though, can’t wait to see any new work you post.

Yes exactly. This is one of the main reasons I post my work on the forums. First I’m not saying my work is that bad or anything, but I always look to improve it. When posting on forums, you often get realistic feedback needed to push your work, everything only serves to better the work like you said. Otherwise I’d just post in my own bubble and have all my friends telling me my work is ‘great and amazing’ and all the rest of itl, which doesn’t motivate real improvement etc, posting online where other great artists can give feedback grounds one to reality so that you can really better yourself as an artist. This has been my key learning process. I’ve never been to an art school, never did art academically (I’m Computer Science) so this was the way to go for me and it has made a huge difference over time for my sculpting skills. (Check my old works then my new sculpts and you will see, it’s coz of the constant feedback) and now I’ve yet to do the same for texturing to which I’m still new / inexperienced.

come on, slow down Darukin. There is nothing to be ashamed off at all. By no means does the character look bad. the very clean look you have there which has a bit of a toy figure feeling could have also been intentional. you have a color scheme that doesn’t suggest naturalism at all and that’s why it actually works quite well as it is. what does look rushed is the weapon and the base. that looks kind of thrown together quickly. the rest is pretty coherent. this look as has quite a plus in so far as it is clearly readable.for example, if you would have done the character for sort of an anime style kind of game with maybe an indian mythology background story then that could be exactly what is needed and more texture detail or even dirt would be spoil it.
so here’s the thing - what is most important is that YOU need a clear vision of what it is supposed to convey and what the purpose of the artwork is and then follow that till you are really done. by purpose I mean, that for example if you only but clearly want to show of your sculpting skills for a demo reel, that a neutral background which gives all focus to the model is just what you need. if on the other hand you want to show some bigger concept and overall idea, story or ‘world’ then a background with an environment like a mountain he stands on and looks down from, or a temple or whatever you have in mind behind him might be the right choices.
either way, you have to make your choices and then go for it.
your ability to be open and take criticism is very good, but you also have to be able to stick to your own intentions, whatever they are. there will always be somebody who doesn’t like what you did and you need to judge the value in comparison to your vision. otherwise you just get easily torn between different opinions.
so, sit back , take a deep breath, close your eyes and try to imagine what the end result of this should actually be and then follow that through

so far you have already shown good work and nothing shameful at all

Hey guys just some progress on the texture/render work

Went through my checklist. I know it’s not perfect but I’m almost done I think and I’m burnt out by now for this model. Hope you guys like. More angles coming soon, just takles while to render

Except for the backdrop texture, this is a direct render straight out of VRay (no post)

@Julian_K: Thanks! I much appreciate such feedback from the pros =) True, maybe I was a little hard on myself, but like I said also I don’t think my work is that bad, but I’m never fully satisfied also, and I’m just trying to push my own boundaries. But everything you said is true, and clear vision and confidence is important, thx for that reminder and reassurance =) Thing is my vision for this model was a slightly more detailed/realistic one anyhow.

I liked the whimsical nature of the previous renders more… I am a fan of the texturing you have done; it looks deliberate and expressive.

This particular being simply has pastels. Nothing wrong with pastels. It was finished a couple renders back imo.

Fantastic model and textures!

Thanks EricShawn

What do you mean this has pastels? Is it coz textures seem washed out? It looks better without before compression but this always happens when I post in forum, must compress image and then it becomes blurred unfortunately =S

So you like previous render more? Fair enough, but either way the previous wasn’t complete imho, even lots of model elements I finalised and then i added more dramatic lighting, that’s why i felt it wasn’t complete before.

Anyhow thanks again

Hey guys, I just uploaded a few turntable and thought I would poset them here, along with one or 2 more angles of Kimahri rendered. ALl turntables are in Zbrush with BPR render and using shader provided by Ralf Stump in his latest thread:

One of them is for the jewellery in fact, if you guys remember.

Here they are:

  1. Quick Jewellery Turntable

I liked the blue guy up until the color render. No fur? It looks weird being blue, having bright pink nipples, and no fur.

Really cool stuff man. Where’d you get the jewelry printed off?

And did you do these renders from zbrush? They came out really nicely.

Hey guys

I'm signing off this project now Here's the final more or less I figured out what one of the key problem with the last efw renders was

The IBL specular and diffuse values weren’t in sync, this ruined accuracy of lighting and blurred things too much, i.e. shiny items were bloated in value while non-shiny otems were completely dark where shadows were etc.

That, and a linear workflow issue and I solved it so it’s a bit better now I think.

@Clintus: Thanks for your comment man =)
The jewellery I must give credit to Alex Fedotov, he’s on these forums too sometimes. He’s a jeweller based in Manhattan who has the equipment and printed this for me.

Cheers

The render looks great -> this would be great printed and painted! (too bad it’s still so expensive…) :+1: . The jewel’s cool!

Congrats on getting him completed - I think the new textures and renders are a real improvement on the previous versions. Definitely worth the time you put into it. I look forward to your next projects :+1:

It looks fantastic Darukin, great job on this character.

The shots with the black background are my favorites…Something about the black and purple combo…really enhance each other, and add to the strenght of the piece as a whole…Just my personal opinion for whatever it’s worth.

Fabulous job in all regards…Top Row in my book of Inspirations and Favorites…:+1:

Good call, it’s a bad ass piece and we all have to move on at some point.

@Etcher: yeah this is the kind of model that would be bad-ass if printed and colored, but too expensive like you said =)

Thanks guys! Yeah I gotta move on, hopefully with a fresh new project I will have motivation and little more experience to improve my texturing / lighting / rendering skills, but not with this character anymore. Anyhow I’m kind of satisfied with it.

SO the question… Shall I use this image or a turntable of this textured model in my demo reel ?? (you know to show off UVs / texture work on reel which sometimes is sought) or should I just stick with the clay / model renders exclusively? I plan to texture my next/final project for the reel as well if that’s the case for consistency in the reel but was just wondering if you guys think it will work, or will it be harmful to the reel? I know I may sound a little paranoid but that’s how strict the industry is nowadays =S

Thanks again to all of you who commented, Etcher, hoskins78, EZRA52, SpiritDreamer, Arthaven!

I’m really a big fan of your stuff. If you’re embarrassed about your last few renders I should just kill myself.

There’s no reason not to show it all. If you completely leave the texturing out then you can’t even show your UV skills/knowledge. I think leaving it out makes you seem less valuable than someone with similar skills that leaves it in. You want to show enough to get that phone or in person interview and whatever is brought up at that point can be addressed.
