Creature - WIP

I love ZB3 so far. Here’s my very first attempt. My goal is to create the entire character in ZB3 and so far so good. The concept sketch in the background is not mine. I’d love to give credit to the person who created it, but I’m not sure who the artist is. Anyway, I hope to do the concept justice. I’ve only put in 8 hours on this so it’s still early. C&C welcome.

hey it’s that troll fighter guy… he’s one of Forgotten Realm’s canon characters… I forget his name, but I’ve wanted to see a good ZBrush’d D&D style troll for a long time

just remember that all the modern D&D troll illustrations portray them as extremely thin and sinewy… they’re like tall and lanky with steel cables for muscles

I look forward to seeing this progress

That’s Matt Wilson’s signature, he works at Privateer Press now. I don’t recognize the piece though…

Matt Wilson, that’s right. I forgot who it was. Had this pic on my hard drive for a long time and I thought it would be a cool project for ZB3. I believe the name of the character is Arrk?

Looking like it’s coming along very nicely  :+1:

Here’s a quick update. Still hammering out the proportions. Added some muscle definition.

Hey I like the way its coming along! I really like the style of the D&D stuff. Have done since I was a child. Are you going to texture him aswell?

I think I will texture him. Does anyone know how to assign seperate materials to each subtool. My guess is to save out each subtool as a tool and texture them that way. Is there a better way of doing this?

turn off Zadd/sub and then turn on M for your brush… and just brush over your model with whatever you want to use as the base material… and then you will be able to switch materials without the model changing on you as well, because you have deliberately placed your material as if it were a texture

Cool. Thanks for the info SalmonGod.

Here’s an update. I’ve started on the sword and I’m reworking his clothing.

Good detail on the arm, and the Sword Runes look cool.

I added the other arm, some torn clothing and the other leg.

really nice work, how many sub tools so far? i like the complexity of this guy.

17 subtools so far.

pack it on… this is going to be a very cool looking guy.

How was the sword done?

The sword blade started out as a box mesh at a low resolution. I painstakingly moved verts to match the sketch and creased edges to get that crispness. Then I subdivided about six times and masked in the runes then did a negative inflate to press the shape of the runes into the sword mesh if that makes sense. The hilt, handle, and skull were all modeled from primitives and sculpted into shape using the same techniques.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Here’s another update. Added some small shields and skulls.

Does anyone know how to model strings in Zbrush? I’m thinking zspheres, but I’m not sure. Any help would be appreciated.
Thx

Cool work. Everything is coming along nicely i think. Isn’t the nose a bit to long and pointy though?
