Count Dracula!

Your Lugosi really got me in the Halloween mood, Rick, really cool!

Hello from Marc and Heidi in Texas! Hope all is well.

I really haven’t had much time to talk to people on here and I now have time to comment.

My collegue at work told me about your work and he was certainly right it is spectacular. I hope one day I can catch such feeling as you have in a piece of cg. Very inspirational and thank you so much for sharing it with us.

“I never expect the first thing that I put down to be what I end up with in the end.”

Well sir could u please take ur 40 some years of xp, some of which I can only imagine that u have paid for dearly, and condense it down to a few words that can help me lol.

Thanks Rick, may I call u Rick, for showing us and pointing us in the right direction.

Congratulations, your work is very good, great, a big hug!!!

hey there again

i was thinkin about askin for a while now and i think that a vdeo tutorial on youtube would b great.

thanks in advance.

Hi Rick,
The second I saw Bela sitting in the top row, I said to myself: “That’s gotta be Mr. Baker’s work!” I hate to contradict an acknowledged master but mate, you have Bela to a ‘T’! I fail to see how this could look more like Bela Lugosi - as Dracula at least. Sure, you could do more work, but why? A first look at the skin texture on the temples etc makes one think that this isn’t the right texture for skin, but then hang on! This is skin with pancake on it, and this is EXACTLY what skin with pancake looks like! The way the makeup covers and affects the fine hairs on the face looks exactly like this. The way you’ve shown heavily lacquered hair is wonderful. Again, you could make it look more photo-real, but why? You don’t want the attention going there, or to the cape or temples either! You (as you well know) want it on those incredible, mesmerising eyes, and THEY are just magnificent! You have all of the menace and other-worldly eeriness of a 1930’s Dracula (with even the tiniest glint of Max Shreck in there!), combined with the wonderful soulfulness of Bela Lugosi himself and the care worn lines which only add to the pathos of the character and reveal the malicious, yet somehow loving smile which the Count offers only to his intended victims.

The shading, the textures, the lighting and those PERFECT eyes - which display the paradox of a character who seduces, loves, enraptures but then ultimately kills his victims - couldn’t be better.

Sure you could make the portrait look more ‘finished’, or more photographically perfect, but why would you do such a thing!?!? You’ve got Bela Lugosi and got him better than just about any photo I’ve seen. If you touch a single pixel I will call the cops and have you charged with defacing fine art!

I just adore this portrait, it’s even better than the excellent Lon Jr you did a while back. So instead of touching this picture, leave it for a bit and give us Lon Chaney Sr as the ‘Phantom’

Go on… Please???

Thanks mate, this is gorgeous! There… you made me gush!! I hope you’re happy!

this is mean! I will have to check some anti-depressants now…

Well… just - BRAVO!

wow!

Hey, He can rise from the grave, huh…didnt see that coming.

Great sculpt! And wow this has such a fantastic sense of realism and image quality.

I’ve been curious about switching over to Modo for some time. I’ve been using maya for 4 years now. How long do these renders run you in modo? I guess this also relates to what your new rig is consists of as well? Mac or PC?

sir, this is absolutely an awesome piece, I always admired your work.
but I believe count Dracula suppose to be Hungarian… he needs mustache…

thank you for sharing

Very inspiring! You have an amazing way of bringing life into your models.

-Chris

Your work is just amazing. I get excited every time you post to see your next incredible sculpt. Thanks for sharing.

Question:

Your detail is so intricate on the model. How many sub-D polys are you working with in your highest Sub-D level? Do you switch to HD mode for such high detail like the pores and wrinkles?

When I try to go over 2-3 million my computer goes “uh-huh nope” *crash. Are you using Windows or Mac? Vista or XP? I would love to know what your “new” killer computer work-horse is made of!

Thanks again and congrats on Top Shelf. You always deserve it.

may we see the 3d model standing alone prior to rendering or post work in photoshop? just curious to see what it looks like

oh well it’s rick baker  is any comment needed  ?

Yet another fine sculpt… But you don’t need to hear that old crap again… Every piece you do is perfect!

So ill point out what I don’t like…

I don’t like the fact that I don’t work for you!

That’s about it.

Just watched An American Warewolf In London and I always find it inspiring… That wolf is still awesome!

Im wondering why I always have the feeling of living the wrong era while looking your works.

An incredibly work, and again, new fresh air in that we called 3D Art.

Thanks.

The eyes are hypnotic. So much expression in them.

I really wonder what getting ready for Halloween means.

well, since everyone else is busy gushing, i’m going to point out a few things i think could be better

the depth of field, around the collar, back edge of the head and ear are too noticeable and smooth, especially around the ear

there’s a line on the nose that’s really distracting

the blur between the skin and side burn looks too soft

some areas on the chin look too soft compared to the heavier, quite intricate detailing around the eyes.

of course i think this is a marvelous job anyway, but no one wants to offer you advice, i don’t care about your background, i’m gonna shoot from the hip and give some feedback

still waiting to see the 3d model standing alone

take care
