Concept Design Sketchbook

Hello ZBrushers,

I’d like to share this concept illustration I did on a wip-model. This was basically one of a few quick render tests, but might as well serve as an illustration. (As you can see in the sketches below there is still missing a lot;))

This is some personal work and the creature is far from being finished,( due to other projects I am working on, I won’t find the time to continue working on it so soon). So below you can view the preliminary work that went into it and the difference is mainly that the creature will get hair (like tentacles) and will be clothed and armoured.
This was basically just a real quick thumb nailing phase (first pic) and after picking up the guy I liked most, I did some more detailed sketches and variations on the face. In the end I decided to go with the less detailed and more suggestive face design, because I favoured this kind of holow mouth/face.
All the additional designing will be done in the sculpting phase, which saves a lot of time. A digital concept can be done this way in a few days and this is the reason why ZBrush is absolutely great for conceptual design. You can work really fast with it and on many occasions you can even skip the 2D concept design phase.(You can see the basic model inbetween the sketches).

Crits and suggestions are always welcome :).

Cheers

great conception and model - anatomy looks good even for an alien ! :+1:

Great character and concept!!

Very cool, I love the face, or more specifically, the negative space of the face, it makes the creature very original.

Very cool design especially the head!

Drool-worthy concepts! Love this… what originality! Your sketches have me itching for natural media again. And your imagination, that is the remarkable thing. Great work. :+1:

Wow! Great stuff, thanks for sharing a bit on your workflow too (and the sketches!) More, please! :+1: .

Top row for sure! Love the design and the final illustration! Great job!:+1:

looks sweet. great character design and sculpt

Magic sculpting. I certainly would not like to meet this character walking down a dark alley way at night, that’s for sure.

Great sketch and great scuplt! remind’s me of a ( Alien Smaurai ) which is awesome! keep up the good work mate’

A Predator on diet  Hard times indeed, great sculpt!

very nice … i like your sketches as well … keep it up

very cool illustration:evil:

Wow, I’m not used to getting so many comments in a short time. Sorry I haven’t been online for a few days. Thanks a lot!

Gary Komar: thank you, I'm glad you like it (there are still some tweaks I will have to do on the anatomy though). alex fox: thank you. I have viewed your characters as well. Great work (I left a comment in your thread). soulburn3d: thanks. I agree with you concerning the design. It is this "negative space" which lead to my decision against the other two concept sketches. I feel that it's more suggestive, but it's more creepy as well. SolidSnakexxx: thank you. EricShawn and Etcher: thanks for your interest in the drawings. Regarding my workflow and sketching I have to admit that I use 2D-sketching rather decreasingly. Very often I just gather the necessary reference material ( which already takes some time...) and then directly go for it in ZBrush. I think that this will be the future anyhow: designing/sketching in 3D and skipping the 2D stage. But drawing and sketching as such is nevertheless the key to good sculpting in ZBrush. For me it's more "drawing" in 3D than 3D modeling, that's why ZBrush is so intuitive. It really is a tool for artists. So to have a little sketchbook and a good pencil with you whereever you go, is always good in order to practice. I often take a look at the work of fantasy artists like [John Howe](http://www.john-howe.com/), who is able to achieve such wonderful work, just with a pencil. Btw Etcher you have some really cool sketches in your "Z_discovery journal". meletis, soulty666, magicmodel: thanks for your support. I am glad that you like the design. Trucido: yes, you are right regarding an "alien samurai", that was what I had in mind when creating the initial thumbnails. I am a huge [Takeya](http://blogs.ign.com/JasonA-IGN/2006/06/28/23155/) fan and the final model will have a lot of japanese-style features (i.e. the sword). cherub_rock, nightwoodwolf and JohnYip: I really appreciate your support. Thanks a lot! :) As I said I won't be able to continue my work on this creature so soon, so I do not have much additional stuff to post, except for the mentioned sword. About 2 years ago I did some weapon design sketches for a Fantasy RPG (minly knives and swords,) that has never been produced. This is a good example of older work that can serve as an inspiration, even if it's just a quick sketch. These are the basic forms for the sword: 1.)

I hope that I will be able to finish this character soon but due to my actual big lack of time, I assume that this will rather be in the far future (...and maybe in a galaxy far, far away...). Thanks again! See ya

Looking forward to this one. Nice 2d stuff too as already mentioned. I can’t wait for Zbrush to get voxels (wish wish) so drawing in 3d will be even more free from technical considerations.

wow man - must have missed this one the first time around. Really awesome work. I am envious of your drawing skills…

Great design! Looks like some earlier Predator species

Nice! well Done
Perfect!

I have as much fun looking at your marvelous sketches as I do your sculpts! What a great artist, seriously. :+1:
