Cave Scene

Hey everyone,
This is my first post here, so I thought I’d break the ice with a Zbrushed work-in-progress environment. The concept behind this was pretty basic… long lost “gadget” style atomic bomb barely hidden in some overgrown cave. The base mesh was modeled in 3dsmax and the textures were from 3D Total’s total textures along with a few personal additions and tweaks. After chunking the cave up like a character, I brought each piece into Zbrush and did a combination of mask modeling and basic brush work. Then using Zmapper I exported out the normals and used the 3rd level subdivison for the newly imported objs. The wip below was rendered in 3dsmax using Brazil. Any feedback/crit would be awesome. thanks!

Fantastic stuff! Great job with the modeling and texturing and lighting and just about everthing! I would love to see the zbrush models? :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

ps…maybe some more exploring? You’ll never know what you find inthere…

I love this piece, the athmosphere is great.

I have a question about chunking though. How do you make sure that all the pieces will match up once you bring them back into 3D Studio max? I would think that the edges would be skewed from the displacement map because the chunks were all edited differently.

Great job, keep us posted

great!! i love it! great lighting work

Great work! :+1: Post a few ZBrush WIP shots and this may well get the top row treatment.

Great job!!!

hi breckten,
that’s a real cool illustration,i like it. nice atmosphere and light.
do you made other illustration without Zbrush, i mean not digital works.
i’m asking because your work don’t looks like a nobodys work.
i’m also a new member and i have my expirience from many years painting and airbrushing. this helps me a lot to work with ZBrush. but it’s different to work in digital art or painting with the real airbrush technique. i mean first you have to learn how the software works.

Anyway, its a nice work.
( sorry for my english writing, it’s not perfect. i know)

What I have realized till now is that most people are rendering cool illustrations out of zbrush though zbrush can be really cool for some good effects rendering. Either other softwares provides better rendering system ( which I doubt is the case) or a good grasp of painting and lighting is required for creating same effect in zbrush.

Whatever is the case breckten this is really good work - 5 stars :+1: :+1:

Did you tried rendering this in zbrush itself ? Why not post this in challenge forums and ask people here to create the same type of effect in zbrush with obviosuly a new concept pic ??

fantastic illustration…i kinda hoped you had rendered it in ZBrush…ah well !
For a w.i.p. it looks very finished to me, very moody , great light and modelling
you did a fine job so far …:+1: …Toprow in the making!

jantim

Awesome:+1:

I also would like to say that this is very unusual for zbrush in that there has not been much art (least wise posted) on caves. Most are about mountains(that’s cool too) but the using of negative space as found in caves has not been posted much here at zbc.:sunglasses:

ditto wckedsunny’s challenge request:+1:

Well this must rock, dragged SpaceMan out of the ether!

Great work, everything makes for a great set.

First off, thank you all for comments and ideas! Once I mess around a bit more with a few things, I’m doing a making-of this weekend for 3Dtotal.com - i’m going to go over the entire creation process and how Zbrush played a major role. I’m still at work right now, but when I get back I’ll post some wireframes and zbrush models and discuss some more. Thanks again!

Wow! I’d love to see a Making-Of on this one. I’ll be looking forward to it. Keep up … and finish :stuck_out_tongue:

Keep us posted, good luck

amazing !! really professional !

love it :+1:

Love the look of this piece. Fantastic painted type feel to it. Five of the best!

Hey everyone,
Thanks again! I’ve attatched a few breakdowns of where I’m at so far.

Here’s a 3D sketch of the scene done using max’s paint polygon tool with some initial lighting:

Here’s the prepped basic geometry before bringing it into Zbrush (the bomb was not done with Zbrush):

Here’s the different chunks along with some wireframes after Zbrushing:

Here’s the all-favorite ambient occlusion render of the scene (done using mental ray with no normal maps):

Finally, here’s some Zbrush renders of a few of the chunks:
