Hey man, I saw this movie on christmas and it was PACKED we had to sit in the front row it kinda sucked. but it didn’t change the fact the movie rocked so much. I wish to see it again

Hi, Scott!
Amazing work, and of course, amazing movie, I already saw it twice and want to see it again, it is a visual overload!
I have got your new DVDs and was really excited to see your workflow, helped me answer some of the problems I was facing. Thank you a lot for posting this and for your work on DVDs!
Cheers!

Great work, amazing film and does anyone know where to find more modelling references for Neytiri?

see here: http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showpost.php?p=642595&postcount=188

these might help

Perfect! Thanks a lot!!!

I seem to be out on a limb here but although your work is good and I say nothing negative about that - the film itself left me feeling very dissapointed.

It was like watching a glorified kiddies fairy tale western movie mix.
I mean there are the earthling bad guys - typical liberal wet approach to soldiers - there are the POOR natives - there is the over obvious love relationship and the jealous native chief to be, who then in solidarity to his OPPRESSED folk fights with the newcomer to overcome the evil empire - yada yada yada.

Geez - with all that money they could not have hired a few more imaginative story writers.
There are people in this thread saying that this film is the “new level” “the new barometer” - well from a film makers point of view I hope NOT.
Sure the CG was well done or at least in parts - personnally I find the natives a bit stupid looking and their MYSTIC TREE oh so childish.
The lanscapes were indeed great and the flying sequences too but hey - so what - that alone does not make a great film.
I think people need to stop this slobbering love affair and get their feet back on the ground. I mean we all had to endure the obama slobbering love affair lately and really it is gettiong a bit rich people and we can all see what is happening to his ratings.

Flaming me for my opinion will not change this opinion either but at least somebody said it.

Fantastic stuff. Love the fact that you can see a likeness in the avatars. I really dig that Norm avatar. So much character in there. Congrats to you and the rest.

Yes, you just sum up the story elements…and this is bad because?
It is Dances with Wolves; It is Pocahontas-esque. The story may be simple and obvious to a fault, but that doesn’t take away from the experience. I personally think James Cameron makes it work. I care about the characters, I was totally immerse in its world. One of the magic of movie is visual, which to say Avatar has groundbreaking CG, and it wouldn’t have worked without it. Avatar is a beautiful film and I would watch it over and over again just to catch in all the details I may have missed. I feel bad for the people who couldn’t enjoy this film because they think there is something wrong with the story…

krisz77: what does any of this have to do with my work? I did not write or direct the film, nor did I claim to love the story or have any ownership of look of the Na’vi. I got payed to translate Camerons ideas, I guess that makes me a capitalist, wow what a concept.
You hijacked the thread and and expect to be flamed…so.
As far as “slobbering love affair” ( I read the book) and I never slobber. When you assume that all of the people involved are of a liberal bent or are at least on the same idealogical page, you would be very wrong. I don’t bring those ideas here, I only show what I have done as an artist.
If you have a problem with what I have done in Zbrush, that’s what this thread is for, C&C are welcome.

If you want to know how I feel about everything else, answer this question

Instead I Know all of the image in Avatar are 3D , I cannot accept that fact !

Hope you stand me!

Congratulations All people worked in the movie. Is Outstanding!!

 great jowb dud keep it up

Patton,

Avatar has got to be the best film I’ve seen in a long time, it is the Star Wars of this century. I was 17 when Star Wars came out and remember how it affected every film that came after for many years.

One quick question though, why did they go with the blue skin? That was rather bland compared to the briliantly colored Banchee and other figures in the film. Not that I’m complaining mind you. Like I said that film will be as influental as Star Wars was in the 70’s.

Also like the way they handled the 3D, every other 3D film I’ve ever seen left me with motion sickness, but not Avatar. Ever see Frankentien 3D LOL?

Thanks Everyone, I will post some new stuff and answer some questions very soon and hopefully have some “new” Avatar news for you…

Scott- Couple questions if you don’t mind.

  1. I was wondering if you know who was responsible for dreaming up the way the Na’vi people bonded with the creatures in there world. Who thought of those things connected to their ponytails? That was brilliant.

  2. Were your concepts of the Na’vi people your sole vision, or were you giving 2d concepts as reference material put together by a team of artists. Would like to see other concepts of what the Na’vi could have looked like, if there are any concepts out there.

  3. BTW I got your DVD’s and they were extremely helpful. I will post my character I designed once I’m finished.

Thanks for your time. Great work on the movie. You should start a sketch book here on ZBC!

Wonderful Work!

I always loved the work form Stanwinston studios. Worked there a few times my self in the mold making department with my father.

Hello,

You did an amazing job! Avatar is now one of my top favorite movies of all time. The work all of you did is really revolutionary.

I am very new to zbrush… I’m wondering now - how much modeling should be done before going into the sculpting stage? Do you model to the highest detail possible or do you just create a really basic model?

I’d love to zbrush for a living. I’m not experienced enough to jump into the big leagues, but what other markets are available for cg skills?

Thanks - once again - awesome job on Avatar!

That depends on your final goals… you should usually work with the least amount of polygons possible. But

  • keep in mind the limits of your computer; if you can only work with 4 million polygons, it makes sense to make sure that your mesh can subdivide to this number and not to, say, 1.5, because in that case you can’t get to 6 million and 1.5 probably isn’t going to be enough
  • also, maybe you want to have enough polygons to be able to pose the model using Transpose, but it’s more flexible because if level 1 isn’t enough you can always use level 2

Then if you need to work with CG animation, you can always rebuild the topology on top of the sculpt to the level of detail you need, and then transfer the sculpt’s high frequency data with some kind of projection.

Just curious, how were Cameron’s original concepts.

great stuff u got there btw

that is glory
