I guess maybe I should clear this one up,because I’ve heard it more than once.
First off they never use the “real” name of the mineral that they are mining on Pandora, he just says “this Unobtainium here” .
The term “Unobtainium” was one that scientists in the 50s used to describe the fantasy substance that that when discovered, would be a “cure all” for society, it was kind of a science geek joke.

Patton! You modeled and sculpted the Banshee,right?Here I have a question on its mouth.When Banshee closes the mouth,the muscles etc. can act correspondingly and properly.How did you model the Banshee’s mouth,at first,the mouth closed or open?Whether modeled mouth-open,then made it proper by animation adjusting?Wish you can show us that workflow?
I wonder I can show my question clearly,can you understand:D ?

Wow, I was also totally blown away also when i saw the movie.
It’s not an exaggeration when i say that this was the most visually beautiful and stunning movie I’ve ever seen in my life!. Hats off to all the artists that created this world, and the animation was mind-blowing! Couldn’t keep my eyes of the jungle and Navi scenes, so much beauty in their world.
I saw it twice and the second time with other friends and I was equally gripped and into the movie even in the second viewing strangely (very rare for me as I usually can’t stand seeing a movie twice 1 week apart)
The visuals made me emotional about all the art and direction and how far CG has gone. You have defined a new level of CG exquisiteness and proven that nothing is impossible with CG, even for visuals which are hard to imagine from how grand they are let alone execute.
Had to get that off my chest, Very inspiring, and thanks and well done to all the artists that brought this world to life!
Will try check out your CD Patton also.
If anyone has links to workflows and behind the scenes stuff involved in the CG and animation I appreciate if you post it or inform us of it here. I’ve never been more interested to read in-depth making-ofs since this movie.
Also i would highly appreciate any details you might share about your workflow in this movie, Patton.
And about unobtanium, lol, I think that was a trivia, an inside joke maybe or a term they used to refer to this material. Unobtanium is an expression used to refer to a material which is so rare and hard to obtain, rather than the actual name given to that material. So i think but i may be wrong.

Beautiful work, fell in love with the movie (3D version) and will go see it a second time since the first time was an emotional overload of impressions and I need to see it a second time to let it all merge with my mind

i saw Avatar last night. i cant even begin to describe to you how blown my mind was. i fell in love with the entire concept and with the Na’vi and their world. if i had a chance to do that i would’ve (become Na’vi :o)

armstrongnt: Thanks for buying the DVDs! Here are some of the alphas that I used on the Dvd all are available here and were created by artists on ZBC, It can be a bit hard to find them.

armstrongnt, all the lip stuff was sculpted with a standard brush and a little patience.
I did use those alphas on the Na’vi , but I used them all together and blended them it takes some practice.
One thing that I always do is use alpha 7 in the Zbrush alphas and turn the z intensity down, and the size small then I use the standard brush with spray turned on as the stroke. I just quickly “paint” the entire surface this will create a nice skin texture that you can the blend other alphas with later.

imo James Cameron made a perfect translation of the (colourful) undersea life
