I must say that Avatar was one of the best movies I have ever seen, largely because of the visuals. I’ve seen the movie four times so far, and each and every time I’ve noticed something new. For the last few days, I’ve been saying “I wish I could talk to someone who worked on the movie, I’d love to know how many polygons a finished character was, and the texture resolution”. Every time i watch an animated (3D) movie, I wonder about the technical specs of everything.
Once again though, amazing work, outstanding movie and i am very jealous that you got to work on such a phenomenal project.

One more time, congratulations all for your amazing work.
I’m trying to make a Netiri model on 3dsmax but I’ve actually some problems with the hairs…
( As it’s a Zbrush forum, I will just post one or two screenshots to be prompt.)

Ps : Please don’t whip me for the dirty meshing :o.
Woah, today i saw the movie for 2nd time Amazing work, really!
I want to ask Patton about the anatomy of the NA’vi’s ?
I mean, the pelvic bone is so small to the rest of the body.
I know that this is fantasy movie and everything goes but this was little awkward to me
Oh man, the animators did hell of a good job on the facial animation!!!
I am amazed!
And it is hand made ? Woah, eat this Benjamin Button
p.s. sorry for my bad english!
Riddick: nice interview with Scott!
Pimeto, you should probably ask Jordu Schell instead, as the navi anatomy is based on his designs:
http://www.schellstudio.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=172
Considering that their heads are far smaller in relation to the body as well, I have no problems with the hip size. They should be able to give birth if their internal workings are similar enough to that of our Earth’s mammals.
pimeto: the bodies of the Navi were really guided from drawings by Jim Cameron and were adapted by Jordu schell in clay Maquettes.
And the Facial “animation” was really driven by facial capture, the virtual cinematography system was developed by Glen Derry. so the faces were driven by the actor and only tweaked by the animators (best case senario )
LY, Patton - tanks, ill check the link
For the animation, ok ok camera rig infront of the face - ok ok, but man!
The whole rig, the whole tweaking and stuff! Cmon, you have to admit it - this is the best, this is real!
I do comparison between Benjamin Button and Avatar.
Button is a human, Na’vi are not but they are more human than Button :o
I dont know how to explain it really, in english, but the facial animation of Button was not that convincing as the Na’vi
Merry christmas to all! Wish you best!
I was thinking about how tall they are, how heavy - compared to humans.
I mean, if we take Earth gravity for example - Na’vis should have strong bone structure, stronger muscles. Anatomy that is able to carry and move that massive body. They are big and fast moving, like cat’s - and of course this is if the concepts were targeting realism.
I love the Na’vi designs, dont get me wrong I was wondering if James Cameron wanted them like that and what is the logic behind it.
(in the “making of” movies on the web, they say that everything has to be logical for Cameron)
Gravity on Pandora is 0.8g, so they’re already able to have lighter body composition and still be stronger. Notice how everything else is bigger on the planet as well: trees, insects, flying animals… And all creatures have lighter bones thanks to carbon fibers and empty air-filled spaces. And so on and so on.
Basically it’s just like pure logic, where if you chose the right premises you can prove almost anything. Here, if you want to have a certain result you can build up your science background to properly support it.
i didnt know that
Nice!
First I was pretty sceptical about Avatar…To say I’m not a big fan of movies like Polar Express, Beowulf, or Benjamin Button is a bit of an understatement…and I thought…not another Hollywood director bragging about how 3D is going to revolutionise cinema.
But I have to hand it to Cameron, coming out of the cinema I haven’t been this excited about a movie since the first installment of The Lord of the Rings hit the movietheaters in 2001.
I thought the Navi where beautifully realised. I love the tall, slender, feline proportions (hence the narrow pelvis). Their elegant, but powerfull movement, the subtle facial animation…and hell yeah…you can call me a sexist, but Neytiri is hot!
Totallly awe inspiring work…
Beautiful work.
Just saw the movie.
I still haven’t closed my mouth! I think the movie effects ‘bar’ has been raised to a ridiculously high level
Love Your 3d Character Concept Design Dvd (part 1). I Love That Its Real Time… Did I Say I Love That Its Real Time?? Yes!! Its Good To See How Long It Actually Takes You To Do This.
Will Get Part 2 Soon. But So Far, Love Part 1
Thats All
hey Patton what was the rendering time? how much time was spent on rendering?
the pelvic bone area is perfect and whats fantasy have to do with it humans are made from dirt and water were clay made with tissue made were not real anyway so watch your mOUTH WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT AVATAR! BECAUSE YOU DONT EVEN THINK STUFF OVER BEFORE YOU OPEN THAT CLOSED MINDED PATHETIC TRAP!
lol to above post. everyone is entitled to their own opinion
Patton, those works are beautiful and really amazing, congratulations!!
