Avatar - self portrait

Ok, so with the release of Avatar coming up, I’m guessing theres gonna be lots of Avatar-characters created. LOTS and LOTS! At first I said to myself I’m not gonna be of those people doing what’s already been done, if you know what I mean? The characters from the movie looks really great so it feels kinda stupid to try and top that. But then again, it might be fun doing a self portrait as a Navi (as an “Avatar”). So I’m guessing this means I’ve gotta post a picture of myself as a comparisons at some point. But I think I’ll hold on doing that for a little while.
So heres a start:

Yep …working on a char myself right now
totally fell your vibes about getting it to look as perfect as possible …

Good start anyway … keep it up

Not at a stage to post any of my renders yet …think ill wait till i get some texture going.

Look forward to more

This is cool, do u have an unwrapped screen grab for the head?

wow…really cool and chic model!

Once you find a good avatar skin material, could you upload it? I need one and I’m not good with materials.

Looks great.

Looks very good :+1:

You seem to have made the same mistake that I did when I first created mine. The nose is too tube like, and the wrong colour. Smooth the sides of the nose into the face more. But if this is just a draft, great work! :+1:

Happy holidays!
Started creating some shaders, dif, sub, spec and bump textures. I’ll be removing the hair in the texture, fix the lips, warmth in the lighting and yada yada. Not sure how much you can really comment on this render since I’ll be changing a lot, but it’s coming along.

best fan avatar ive seen yet

awesome man, love the flat shade.

looks great:+1:

just noticed how great the eyebrows are, care to share how you’re doing them and any resources you could direct me to, to achieve similar results?

Thanks for the input and feedback.
u3190: I never really create a specific shader for every specific model i Zbrush. I’ve got a nice library of different default shaders so I basically just use the one I feel fits the model. Check pixologic.com for more free matcaps.
When it comes to the last render I just used the SSS shader in Maya. And since that shader is more or less already a skin shader, the only value I changed is the Scale Conversion value under Algorithm Control based on the size of your model. The spec is done using mia_material together with the mix8layer shader.

tarik2d: Heres a screen of the uv for the head:

joe55: Actually I havent touched the eyebrows yet. But thats usually one of the last things I start to work with. Of course they are important for the overal expression of the character, but until time comes I just leave it in the texture. Depending on the render I might just create a alpha texture and use polygon planes.

great model great render. what can i say more. i like it

Holy freakin lord… thats awesome! I was making one as well in 3ds max but it doesn’t come close to this. I need to become as good as u :frowning: lol

Hey that looks pretty good actually. Hm… you’re kinda making me want to texture mine now actually.

I’d just say put in some volume for his hair. Its a nice piece but the hair is just a photo of hair. Maybe at least bring it off the scalp a bit to imply some actual hair.

I did this one on Saturday… Nice piece man. Looks cool.

Hm… just noticed that my last post didnt have all the photos. Just updating.

Thats not a bad start for your avatar. It look pretty good. It’s just missing some finer points is all. Underpinnings of muscle behind the skin, Maybe increase the eyes as well.

Good stuff. we should have an avatar specific thread for models.

oneigekko: I’m using myself as a ref for the overall shape of the model. Unfortunately my face isn’t skinnier than that so I wanted to “keep it real”. But I’ll try to make myself skinnier when I get the time.

Nice to see people creating great Avatars. Keep em coming!
