Avatar portrait [wip]

Hi!

Long time no post here, so in an attempt to resume sculpting and try to brush up on my skills again i decided to try to recreate a Avatar chick, yes i know everyone makes their own versions now and after watching the awesome movie i wanted to see if i could sculpt one myself. Most likely i will fail… but you never know!

Here’s what i made so far… first is a basemesh i built in Modo, second is a Zbrush sculpt from a few days ago, and third is a quick polypaint texture test to see if my sculpted mesh would work or not.

I’ve been watching your progress on youtube, and it looks pretty nice. It needs a little more work on the nose (needs to be flatter) but apart from that it looks beaut
I gave up on my own self portrait (I don’t know how to do the hair) but I’m putting in alot more effort for my dad’s (he hardly has hair lol)
Kepp working at it!

u3190: Thanks, unfortuntely i somehow missed to post updates here which i planned to do. That’s why i started this thread in the first place hehe. Anyhow you’re right, the nose should be flatter and it is now because i have progressed a lot in my work on this model.

These things are not as easy to do as they look, although she’s my first charactermodel ever i thought it was gonna be easier but o no how wrong i were, this is a real challenge. Hehe you’re right, hair is a tricky part to do and i fear that as i now have reached the stage where i have to start with the hair myself.
I can see why you skipped the hair too  your model looks not bad at all, it could use some more refinements but over all it’s quite nice.

My latest update, i finalized her shape, i modeled the eyes, painted textures for her face and all that, created shaders for her skin, setup a temporary lighting for testing, i gave her earrings, she has a full set of teeth in her mouth and there’s a whole range of stuff i’ve done to her. I’m setting up the scene in Modo so this is a rendering from Modo 401.

Your model looks beautiful. You should be proud. :+1:
The only thing I noticed that could be improved is the skin texture. It needs a little more contrast between the stripes. And the emmissive obviously isn’t finished (I hope its not anyway)
But well done, great work.
There’s only a few good avatar models out there and yours is one of them

I think that is looking pretty good so far - I hope you take it all the way!

Here’s my own update. Ive been working on it for a while so Ive probably missed some obvious faults.

And one more thing I think could improve your model, is to define the neck a bit more. Its very smooth at the moment. You need to bring out the tendons
Take this reference for an example of what im trying to say:
Neck define.JPG
It should only take less that 10 minutes to do.
Once again, good work :+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1: I can’t wait to see the final turntable.

I don´t understand the hype about these avatar characters. I absolutely don´t like the design.

u3190: Thanks! yes i’m quite satisfied so far with my results, especially since she is my first charactermodel ever. About the contrast between the stripes, if you are thinking about the contrast of the individual stripes and not the contrast between the stripes color and the underlying bluetone skincolor, these are two separate things. I can see why adding more contrast and some colorvariation on the stripes would help the texture but i don’t think i agree with you regarding contrast between the stripes and the blue backgroundcolor. I’ll look into this some more…

abhominal: Thank you  i will try my best to push this as far as i possibly can. Next thing on my to-do list is to start working on her hair, which in itself is gonna be a nightmare.

u3190: Nice work, you need to spend more time on the fine details, the subtle things is what makes it. Somehow the proportions feels a bit off. The neck… i looked at numerous referenceimages and compared and evaluated and from what i can see they seem to have very slender slim necks, not much visible musculature there if any. In that pic you posted the neck is very stretched and then those muscles are visible, but i doubt they are in a relaxed neck like my model has. We’ll see… i’ll take a closer look at that part too.

pitchepuck: There’s no hype, it’s just another character. Some people like the design, some don’t and that’s just fine. I’m creating this character as a exersize in modeling, working off references, shading, texturing, lighting and so on, and yep i do like these characterdesigns even though they remind me of Smurfs hehe.

New update showing some stuff i been working on lately, what i’ve done is…

  • sculpted new skinpores, the old one’s sucked
  • redone her lips, new shape with more details
  • smileyllines in her face around her mouth
  • visible muscles at her front lower throat
  • chin adjusted a little bit
  • cheeks adjusted a little
  • nosetip slightly moved
  • corners of her mouth pulled in and back more
  • and more minor stuff…

Now i’m gonna start with the main texturing, her colormap for her skin has to be painted from scratch again because i was unhappy with my first texture. The new one should be better.

Thanks for sharing! How many polys are you working with??

Great work!

Skadalilama: Thanks! i’m working with 6,2 million polys for her head and then there’s more polys for each subtool so it’s probably somewhere over 10 million totally…

lobster101: Thank you very much!

I been spending a few hours tonight laying out Zspheres to as a base for her hairmeshes, and there’s a lot of them! this was bloody hard work to do but i didn’t realize that until after i were done with it. It’s still a bit symmetrical looking but that’s one thing i’m gonna take care of before i generate polymeshes of each hair thingy and export them out to Modo. Anyways… enjoy the show!

Tjenare!
Glad to find you here, wasn’t sure if you were a member or not
As I have already told you, she looks great  :+1:

Hej Santis!

I been a member of ZBC for a while now and before then i lurked in the shadows here for many years…
Thanks, i appreciate it. Not many seems to like my work on ZBC since i’m a newbie here but that’s ok and it’s understandable.

A new update, i have given her a full body now. It’s not 100% finished yet but it’s getting close. A couple of details left to do and then i can resume my work on her hair again.

Hey, nice work so far ! If I can suggest something, I would make her tail starting a little lower as you’ve done, under the sacrum bone instead of upper it. Hope this helps.

Cheers

I agree with pitchepuke.

skullmonkey: Thanks  good suggestion, i didn’t think of that but it makes sense now when i looked at some references. I made some adjustments and tweaks to where her tail blends into her back and i hope this one is better.

RivvenGuard: Ok, doh sorry now i saw pitchepuke’s reply. By mistake i scrolled by it to fast. Again i am sorry for working on a wip like this now but i thought it would be good practice for a beginner like me to learn Zbrush but apparently i picked the wrong subject so perhaps it’s best i cancel this project and create either a muscular man, a Hulk or another type of monster like everyone else are creating here on the forum. That seems to be popular and well accepted type of artwork.

Anyhow, i adjusted the the area where the root of the tail blends in with the the back and her spine. Hopefully this is looking better and more realistic now. Other stuff i tweaked are some muscles which i brought out a bit to try to make them slightly more visible but not too much. I want the body to remain slim and not very muscular looking. Oh and i almost forgot to say, i tweaked her boobies to tone them down a bit more, they should be smaller and not so pointy now.

pitchepuck I don´t understand the hype about these avatar characters. I absolutely don´t like the design.

pretty sure you know who that is if you responded to them.

Rivvenguard: I apologize for missing his/her post and i am also sorry for my choice of subject to sculpt :frowning: i was not aware it is a unpopular character and movie, i just picked it as a subject to teacj myself Zbrush and organic sculpting with. Next time i will try to pick a subject that everyone likes on the forum, perhaps a big monster with huge muscles and a massive weapon, stuff like we usually never see on this forum…

Ok so i’m dropping this wip now, thanks everyone for your kind comments on my project. See you in the next wip whenever and whatever subject that will be.

hi, I just saw that you stop working on this model. don´t stop !!! finish this! I didn´t want you to stop. I just wanted to say that I don´t like the film design. this has nothing to do with your work! which is realy good:+1:
you were absolutly right that this is a good practise. so go on
