Thanks 3duserman!
No, this wasn’t for Alex’s course. This was just a personal project for fun
But of course Alex’s stuff is always awesome and inspiring!
Haven’t thought of doing videos, cuz it’s gonna be so boring to watch haha I don’t think my process is anything special, I usually have a good idea of what I want in mind, then block out the general shape and proportions of it with simple shapes (cubes, cyclinders and spheres with zmodeler to block out rough shape).
For this rail gun, I had the character’s arms/hands placed in the scene at roughly where I want so that I can design the handles appropriately. Then its pretty much just breaking down the simple shapes into smaller parts to make it look ‘cool’. I work with pretty dense meshes; at least 1mil for any subtool unless it’s a unimportant part where I have no plans for details. I start decimating subtools probably half way through the whole process just to keep the filesize not too crazy (usually decimating twice with 20% on for hardsurface stuff is ok). I use a lot of Extract, Panel Loops, and Booleans to create the shapes too. Hope this somewhat helps
