“Softimage 3D was released in 1988, and was renamed in 2000 to XSI, and then changed to just Softimage in 2009.”
Softimage 3D was not renamed to XSI in 2000. XSI and Softimage 3D were both sold side by side for a few years. XSI is a completely different program. It’s actually the newest of the 3 major applications (max/maya/xsi) and seems to have a more flexible core architecture as evidenced by the massive additions and revamping that has occurred between v4 - 2011.
Softimage actually listens to their userbase and the trend seems to be continuing even after the acquisition by Autodesk.
Honestly, when I look at this page:
http://www.xsibase.com/articles.php
and see all of the phenomenal work that has been done over the years with tools created by the Softimage team it really does feel like a smack to the face when Pixologic doesn’t create a GoZ plugin for XSI.
I don’t want to start an app flame war here as that’s quite lame, but, to exclude a major software like Softimage from the GoZ goodness and provide it to apps like Modo/Cinema4D which have less market share and have not been used as extensively in the film/commercial/games industries is even lamer imo.
There are several phenomenal artists that post insane work here and their primary 3D tools of choice are Zbrush and Softimage.
i.e. Scott Patton, Aaron Sims, Greg Punchatz, etc.
I’m guessing they aren’t happy about not having GoZ either. Hopefully we Softimage users won’t have an extended wait to use such a great workflow boosting tool like GoZ and am really looking forward to Z4’s release regardless of the big let down GoZ wise.
